Ada cried, the thought of her father and what they have been through made her emotional. Ada stopped crying immediately and her voice shook with emotion as she told Chief everything about herself. She held nothing back as she opened up him.
Chief Eze sympathized with her and she drew comfort from his words. Ever since the tragedy befell her family, she has bottled up the pains and sorrow in her. As she talked to Chief, she felt a relief of a sort. Chief’s comforting words soothed her aching soul; she felt better that she talked to him. She felt lighter in the spirit.
After lunch, chief asked his driver to take her home; she has closed for the day. Ada felt bad that Chief would know the kind of neighborhood that she stays; it was a poor neighborhood. Coolval stories As the driver drove to her house, she felt very uneasy. When they got to her neighborhood, she asked the driver to stop several houses before their own. She thanked chief for the meal and she came down from the car.
Chief’s exotic car was out of place in their neighborhood and Ada saw some people looking curiously at the car and at her. She knew tongues would start wagging but she didn’t care. She was use to their neighbors not minding their business.
A week later, Chief invited Ada out to dinner and she obliged him. She wondered what her boss wanted with her that he invited her to dinner. He took her to another different place and once again, they were treated like royal personage. They ate dinner and talked but there was nothing personal about their talk. Once again, Chief asked his driver to drop her at home. Ada was feeling uneasy. Why was Chief treating her like this? It was something that got her wondering.
After that day, Chief always invited Ada out for lunch or dinner date. It was the usual routine: they talked and it was nothing too personal and afterwards, his driver would drop her at home. Ada started getting uneasy and wondered what Chief really wanted with her. He hasn’t told her anything but she felt he was definitely up to something and it made her uneasy and self-conscious.
One day, on one of their usual dates, Ada blurted out. “Sir, you are always asking me out for dates. What about your wife?” It was something that had been bothering her for a very long time and she didn’t know when she said it out.
Immediately the words were out, Ada recoiled in horror. What if her boss didn’t take it lightly with her question? What if he took offense? What will become of her?
For a moment, Chief said nothing as he looked sadly at her; Ada felt guiltier.
“Sir, I am sorry, really sorry for asking such a question. I really didn’t know what got over me,” Ada tried to apologist.
“You don’t have to Ada, I know how you feel,” Chief smiled sadly at her.
Ada read the sadness in his voice and she felt for him. Chief opened up to her and told her all she needs to know about himself. He lost his wife several years ago and ever since then, he has not remarry. He has three children, all girls and they were schooling abroad. He told her he was always lonely that was why he liked to take her out. He has plans to remarry because he needs a girl to give him a male child that would carry on his name but he has not met the right person.
Ada felt his pains and she sympathized with him. She tried to console him and he loosened up as they chat and cracked jokes.
Ada has not seen her boss laugh before; it made him look younger and more relaxed. She wished he would laugh often.
They talked for long and when they finally parted ways, Ada felt sad and wished she could stay with him longer. She looked forward to another date with her boss but he didn’t invite her out for weeks on end. At the office, he acknowledged her greetings and every other thing was work, work. Ada missed their dates and talks so much and she wished he would invite her out again. She dared not ask him about it and she pretended not to be affected in any way but she was affected. She didn't understand how she feels but she suddenly wanted to be alone with him and she missed their chats and the bond they shared.
Several weeks later, Chief asked Ada out for a date. Ada felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of a date with Chief. It was on a Saturday, she doesn't go to work. Chief’s driver came to pick her at home. Ada’s mother’s eyes were filled with questions. Ada told her nothing as she went to meet Chief in his car. Chief’s driver took them to a private beach in the island. There was a hotel at the beach. The hotel offers a haven of peace and serenity away from the bustle of the city. Once again, Chief was treated like a royal personage. Ada had a treat of a life time and she concluded that the rich certainly knew how to enjoy themselves. It was getting towards evening and Ada felt bad that the day was going to end. She was really enjoying herself and wished the day wouldn’t end. She wondered why she was getting to like Chief a lot.
Ada expected Chief to ask them to leave but he seems not to be in a hurry to leave the place. He asked her if she likes him and she told him she did. He asked her why she likes him but she has no answer for him; she just stared at him in confusion.
Chief was smiling as he held her hands and told her what shocked her to her bones. She stared at him in shocked silence. He wanted her to be his wife. She couldn’t believe her ears. She was nobody but he was a powerful and rich businessman and the age difference between them was much. If she considered the issue of love, she really doesn’t know if what she felt for this man can be call love. He lightens up her day and she always looked forward to see him with much enthusiasm. Could such feeling be called love?
He asked her to marry him. What will her mother say? What will people say? He was just too old for her.
Chief told her that he knew that his proposal came as a shock to her but he meant his every word. He didn’t just want to marry her because he wanted someone to be his companion. He could choose a lady from the thousands of glamorous ladies that flocked around him. He wanted her to be his wife because he felt something for her. He didn’t know how it happened but it just happen and he fell in love with her. She was very different from all the ladies he knew. Her simplicity and her honesty was something that intrigued him. If she would accept to be his wife, he was ready to give her the world. He knew Ada was the perfect person for him and she would make him happy. He pleaded with her to accept his proposal and make his life worth living.
Ada finally broke her silence and asked him to give her time to think about it. The proposal was too sudden and it was not something that she expected. Chief took her home and he also gave her some money for her mother.
Ada went home wondering what was really happening to her. What did Chief saw in her that he wants her for a wife when he can choose from several millions glamorous ladies out there? She was a nobody, why did he want her for a wife?
Ada’s got home and told her mother the news. Her mother's eyes dilated with shock as she looked at her daughter.
"Mama, what do you advise I do. Your answer is what I need now," she told her mother.
The story continues.....
If you are Ada's mother, what will you advise her to do?
