OBSESSED
Episode 11
“NO!” lizzy cried out and jumped up. It was a dream, a type of dream she dreaded, she saw someone kill her sister, mother and abducted her. She tried remembering the face and figured out that it was the mysterious doctor.
Jade had told her that she saw a full head mask and an eyeglass when she was searching for the mysterious doctor who happened to be an impersonator. A full head mask, one that cannot be easily detected and the mysterious doctor left it for them to find. He definitely knew what he was doing and he might have the upper hand.
She heaved a sigh and walked up to the emergency ward her mother was being kept. The unconscious body of her mother made her doubt what the doctor told them
“Can she still be alive?” she doubted it, still staring at her mother from the transparent glass.
Her mother has been all she got since she was born. Her mother had told her that she lost their father around when Jade was 2 years old. Being a cook was very hard as she was a single parent. Her mother owned an African restaurant at the country side, she said she wanted to promote Africans because the racism painted Africans black. Not surprisingly, many people come to eat there, even the so called un-mixed white Germans loved her cookings.
Lizzy smiled, remembering an incident where a white lady came to the restaurant with her son, the guy was about the same age as hers. Judging from his behavior, Lizzy knew he was a critic, an extreme racist probably one whom the father must have given so much orientation of how bad blacks are.
He eventually entered the restaurant but refused to eat anything. The white lady who appeared to be the mother of the boy, ordered her food and ignored the proud peacock. Lizzy noticed how uncomfortable he was and walked up to him. Since Lizzy and Jade has a white melanin, it wasn’t hard to talk to him. Only their mother was dark in complexion
“hey” she called out
“hey” he responded as calmly as he possibly could but it was obvious he was faking it
“can I talk to you outside?” she asked
“oh yeah sure! What a brilliant idea” he quickly got up and took an excuse from his mum. This time around, his mother didn’t object.
The mother watched as they went outside and heard them laughing loudly shortly after. She watched as her son seemed free with Lizzy.
They talked and laughed for minutes before they got into the restaurant again
“please ma’am allow me take him for some minutes” Lizzy asked again and the woman agreed
So she took him to another table, served him an African food, and they got talking. It so happened that they were in the same high school but on different departments. She also was on the singing club but you know tall guys, he definitely was on the basket ball team. He wasn’t as popular as Drake the basket ball team leader and most handsome dude in school, but she had seen him sometimes in school and had a crush on him, tho she didn’t really like basket ball. They introduced themselves again, and he said his name was Fred.
They became friends and he came any of his free time to eat his favorite African food “BUSHI” it is an Angolan native food Lizzy’s mum learnt while in a visit to Angola before getting married. It became Fred’s favourite and he would always ask for it whenever he came visiting.
As lizzy remembered all those times, she couldn’t help but feel happy for how nice her mum was and seeing her here in this state made her heartbroken.
###### ##### ######
It was 5:30pm and Jade drove as speedy as she could. Time wasn’t on her side and the drive from her house to her mother’s was about 40 minutes coupled with the traffic she experienced.
As she managed to get out of the traffic, she stepped on it and soon reached her destination. She got down from the vehicle and held tight her hand bag. Although scared, she was determined.
She pushed the door knob and entered into the living room. It was still as they left it on Friday before visiting the hospital. She knew she had no time to waste, climbing the stairs leading to the bed rooms, she stood in front of her mother’s bedroom scared of what she might find out. She sighed heavily and opened the door.
The room was neat and the bed was already spread. The room smelt nice and she felt her nerve calmed down. Jade proceeded to drop her bag and went ahead to the drawers she saw beside the king sized bed. Her mother has refused to change the bed since their father died. She wondered what a single person would be doing with a bed as big as this, it was meant for a couple. Obviously, her mother not wanting to change the bed meant she didn’t want to forget about their father. She still kept memories of him and Jade noticed one time that her mother would always look at his pictures before sleeping.
As she dragged the drawer open, it was stuck. She searched for the key but found none. Eventually, she found it on a hook under the bed. She removed it and opened the drawer.
There was nothing in it just a few cash and a pen. She closed it and opened another one, it was empty, and so all three drawers was empty
She got frustrated and stood in the middle of the room.
“if there was anything important, mum wouldn’t keep it in a drawer anyone can gain access to” she thought brilliantly and went over into her mother’s closet. She pushed the clothes away and went on looking for any clue. She searched and searched but found nothing, she got discouraged and stormed out of the room.
She was going to report to the police and it is the best idea she could think of.
As she was about to go out of the room, she found an envelop on the floor, probably fallen out of the clothes. She picked it up and checked it’s content. It contained pictures of her dad and mum in various vacation places. She scanned thoroughly, looking closely at the pictures. She dipped her hand into the envelop again and met another sealed smaller envelop. She tore it open and saw strange pictures she had never seen before.
She saw her mother when she was younger, she guessed the picture should be between 22-24 years old because it was in a black and white format. Her mother stood amongst people. Children and teenagers mostly, she saw a woman about her mother’s age standing at the other corner of the picture, close to the lady stood another man who appeared to be her husband. in the picture, she saw a younger version of Dess and the same boy who looked familiar on Dess’s picture,.
“what kind of place is this?” she asked herself and looked at the background of the picture. There stood a storey building “SWEET JINGLE FIVE” was written on top of the building and the name matched a name Jade had heard before. She checked other pictures but it was a duplicate of the first one. So she took a duplicate and kept others in their place.
She closed the door behind her and left the room. Something is wrong somewhere. Seeing Dess and the boy in a photograph her mother has first rang a bell. She wished she could reach Dess to ask questions but she had mysteriously vanished.
And also seeing her mother in a picture with Dess and the familiar boy meant her mother knows a lot. Even the word SWEET JINGLE FIVE rang a bell. She was confused; her life has been a confusion. She entered her car and drove off. She really needed to report to a police station which should have been her first move.
As she rode on the lonely road leading to the city where she stayed, she noticed the same car following her again. She quickly took a turn and speedily drive down the road which met a dead end. She hurriedly parked and came down from her car and hid behind a trash can, waiting for the strange car to approach and to see the driver once and for all.
