Lydia brought out down her empty plastic rubber and quickly locked the creaking door before sitting on the bare floor of the tiny room.
She brought out her money from her bra and poured it on the ground.
She began counting as smile escaped her face. N1,200! She had sold 12 bags of sachet water! She was happy as she brought out her kpankolo (saving box) and put 500# inside while she kept the remaining N700 to buy more sachet water to sell and also eat.
Lydia is a poor orphan who lost her Father first to the cruel hands of cancer and her Mum followed later dying from acute Typhoid.
She was in SS3 then and so couldn't write the WAEC Examinations.
She was determined to go to school and so started selling sachet water across the road, in the market and anywhere walkable.
She had no bank account to save any money so she made the Village carpenter to construct a saving box for her and told herself to make sure she put money in it everyday and so far, she has been doing well.

Kamsi got home that evening with her gallon of water.
"Mama! Udoka!! Onye no nso? (who is close-by?)"
Her mother Nkiru ran out to help her down with the gallon of water.
"arghhh this thing di heavy"She said as she sat down
"Thank you nwa m"Nkiru said smiling at her.
"Udoka! Where is this boy?.. He should come and take this water inside godu"She looked around searching for Udoka with her eyes.
"Mama please, I want to run along now and see Ify"Kamsi said moving out
"Bia here my friend!!"Nkiru shouted.
Kamsi came back
"Which Ify do u want to go and see? Is it not the one his mother keeps embarrassing you everywhere and calling you names? This girl.. Why do u have ear block?"
"Mama, we love each other.. His mother cannot stop us, it's just a matter of time and she'll understand"
"Shut up! I know Veronica very well. She's wicked and heartless, I don't want her to harm you because of this matter. Can't you just stay away from her son? There are many guys out there that would love and adore you.."Nkiru stressed
"Mama, it's ifeanyi I love and he loves me too"Kamsi said
"I don't know if there's cockroach in your ears.. I said stay away from the young man, his mother doesn't like you. Ogini di? Ha erili alo gi ebeahu?? (did they bury your navel there?)"
"Mama I'll see you when am back. Ify is waiting for me now!"Kamsi said and ran off..
"Kamsiyochukwu!! Kamsi!! This girl won't hear me now"Nkiru said and went inside..

"Uto'm, I want a better life for us. I want to make money so that I can come and marry you. I want to make so much money so that I can maintain this your fresh skin"Ifeanyi said touching her skin
"(LOL) ify! When will you stop teasing me?"Kamsi said
"I'm not teasing you.. Your skin is like overripe pawpaw.. Very soft and fair.. I need money to maintain it..!"Ifeanyi stressed
"Ehn.. I want you to make money too.. But what do you do?..Like what do you think?"Kamsi said sitting up coolval stories.
They were in the bush as usual where nobody would disturb them.
"I've been thinking.. I know about spare parts.. Why don't I start selling spare parts? Like rent a shop and start selling little by little?"
Kamsi thought for a while
"Spare parts business is good o but let's think of the capital.. the capital is huge and again, this Village is too under developed. Few people have cars here so who wants to patronize you?"
Ifeanyi realised Kamsi had a point. They stayed in a rural village where only few people had cars so spare parts business wouldn't move.
"You are very correct! But what do you think I should do? I don't want to go to the city and leave you here.."
"Me too, I don't want you to leave. We'll make it together in this Village"
"So what do you suggest?"
"Uhmmm.. Why don't we open a beer parlour? Where we'll sell palmwine and all sorts of beer, then pepper soup and bush meats too.. From there, we would save money so we can rent a big shop in the outskirts of town and have a branch, from there again, we will move to the city, from there to America," They both laughed.
"You know eh, apart from your beauty, you are very intelligent.. Highly intelligent"Ifeanyi complimented.
"So how much do you have?"She asked
"Obere ego o.. N10,000 that I've been saving for 6months now"
"eh, that one can start up something.. I think I have some money with me also.. We will join it to make a small kiosk then from there.."
Ifeanyi hugged her tightly and thanked her for her advice and contribution.
The next day, Kamsi stole N30,000 out of the N50,000 her brother sent to them from Portharcourt and gave to Ifeanyi
