One peaceful sunday afternoon, an elderly
couple
took a walk in the park.
They walked hand in hand with their
hearts beating
with the same pace.
They sat by the wooden chair beneath a
tree that had
few birds nest with the elderly woman
leaning on her husband’s chest, she
asked: “How did we manage
to stick together through all the storms
we came
across?”. Caressing her arm he replied: “I
was willing to hold
on to you”. She continued asking: “Why
did you stick with me
even when wrinkles paid me a permanent
visit? I no
longer look as beautiful as i looked when
we met”. He held her tighter and replied:
“When i met you, i
only saw you in the room. Your heart
made it easy for
me to stick with you. When you grew
older, you
became more beautiful because your
heart became
more softer. You loved me when i didn’t
love myself
enough to be a better husband to you.
You reached out your hand to me when i
drowned in my own
insecurities. You were there for me when
i failed, you
were my shoulder to lean on when i
needed to get up.
You held my hand and lead me towards
my goal and
you made sure that i achieve it. You loved
me enough
to be one with me, to accommodate a
part of me inside of you, to give birth to it
and mother it with the
care you show towards me”. She shed
tears and held him tighter, looked up and
saw a bird feeding its chicks with its
beak. He looked at her and asked her:
“Why are crying my
dear?”. She replied: “I am crying because i
am
saddened my grand daughters will never
live like the
queens they are. They will never walk
down the aisle
for the right reasons and ther will never
live in their
mansions because the world has been
absorbed by lack of knowledge of what
love is. I remember when i
fell sick. I was bedridden, and very useless
to you, to
myself. You became my mother, you
bathed, clothed
and fed me. You never grew tired of
babysitting me at
the age of 35. While other men went to
soccer
matches, you stay at home to change my
sanitary towels, comb my hair and polish
my nails the way i
loved to polish them. You did laundry,
ironed it and
packed it in my closet the same way i
packed them.
You cleaned our house and cooked me
my favorite
meals although i ate few spoons and
puked all over
you. You become a mother to our children
during the day,
and were a mother and a father to them
at night”. He shed a tear and said: “I did
all that because you
are a part of me, and i made a vow to you
that i will
love you in sickness and in health, i meant
it. . .” She said: “Even if i could be denied
heaven, i have
lived in a paradise for 60years, and if i
were to die
now, i would rest in piece knowing that
your love will
the cotton fitted in my coffin to give me
comfort, your
honesty will be the hyms sang to me to
accompany
me and your care will me my transport to
the right hand of my saviour. I love you
sweetheart, hold me
tight and never let me go. He felt her
letting him go. Her pulse stopped, he
looked at her and realised she was gone.
He closed
her eyes, looked up and said a little prayer
to himself.
God answered him, he died holding her
tight.
They died in each other’s arms after
60years of
marriage, they were buried next to one
another.
