The dichotomy between university and polytechnic graduates calls for government attention, as it appears to be one of the reasons many students are not willing to accept admission into Nigerian polytechnics. Over the years, students seeking tertiary education always wanted to attend universities. Few who are in polytechnics or have graduated from polytechnics did so as a last resort.
The reason why student don't want polytechnics is that
(1) UTME cutoff mark: university needs minimum of 180 while polytechnic accept 150
(2) In the polytechnic system, the Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA, is 4.0, while that of the university is 5.0.
(3) polytechnic spend a minimum of five years on any course to obtain HND, while the university undergraduate spends four years, while some specialized courses, like engineering take five years, while architecture and medicine, take six and seven years respectively.
(4) If you get to most polytechnics in Nigeria, it is the university graduates that are employed as lecturers. The authorities seldom employ polytechnic graduates as lecturers.
(5) While universities require five credits, including English and Mathematics, polytechnics are satisfied with four credits, to include Mathematics and English. Some polytechnics even accept a pass in English.
(6) There is great difference in their salary, where B. Sc start from a higher level and HND starts from a lower level of minimal wage.

They really have to equalise HND and B.Sc ... I went to poly which I am proud of and don't want to be underestimated by any university student....

Because of this, there are over one million admission spaces in the polytechnics and colleges of education, students are not willing to accept the offers. It is difficult to persuade prospective students that university and polytechnic certificates carry the same weight.

I think to bring down the number of admission seekers in Nigeria, polytecnics should be given the authority to offer Bsc certificates too. Orr the HND result should be in the same grade with the BSC...and not jex preferring a BSC holder over an HND holder who might have even suffered more to get the cert. My opinion.
