EPISODE ONE This was the life Martins saw himself revel in through his endless dreams during his final days as an undergraduate. This was the life he imagined immediately after his NYSC servitude, because a prophet once told him that he would be celebrated before he turned thirty. He knew he was destined for greatness all along but he just didn’t understand why life had been such a hater of late. “How on earth did I survive staying in a “face me, I slap you” building for almost a year?”Martins thought aloud. He was just too refined to be subjected to such life that could bring disrepute, it was for crude and rugged humans like Deji. If the Police were to be hunting for a criminal in the neighbourhood he was sure the tenement building where he resides will be the first port of call because it is believed that it is a haven for low-lifes’. Nonetheless he was where he had always wanted to be and he wasn’t even thirty yet; though his 30thbirthday was barely three days away. With the three bedroom apartment he just rented in a choice location, now he needed no soothsayer to tell him that opulence mingled with his red blood cells and flowed freely in his veins. This was the life! Now his Landlord can cry blue murder for all he cares, he was ready to stand in the witness box to defend himself. He now had enough money to call his bluffs. He owed Aisha several…that babe had been the brain behind his sudden rise to stardom. She had introduced him to the Politician who had become the biggest client Realty Point had ever had. With his prowess and upbeat inter-personal skills that had come out of the blues and perched on his inexperience, Martins sealed what would turn out to be the biggest business deal of his life. A deal that had finally brought out that element of greatness God had placed in him some thirty years back. After all said and done this was the end of his brouhaha! Martins woke up with a start! A beautiful nighmare? “How long had he been sleeping”he drowsily wondered The mechanical clock on the mango-wood bedside table in the ornately decorated room suggested he was late for work yet again! “10’ o clock?” Or is the clock in the room for New-yorkers? Martins had maintained a conversation with himself for more than thirty seconds before it finally dawned on him that it was a Saturday. Moments ago his dream had callously taken him on yet another deceptive roller coaster ride into his world of undiluted fantasy; still his mind had the aplomb to play tricks on his helpless being. Once again his dreams fooled him. When will these dreams of his come to fruition? Will they even ever come to pass? Is he really destined for greatness as the prophet once revealed? When would he stop daydreaming on strawberry swings? The world was indeed a wicked place for his likes or why would a Deji who is a lazy- ass and feeds on Stella acquire such property when Martins who hustled like there was no end in sight was homeless? That equation can never be balanced.Deji had still not told him how he got that apartment. He had dodged the question all through yesterday and had rather taken to spoiling Martins with niceties all evening. First it was to see a movie Martins had longingly craved to watch at the galleria, at least that took his mind off Deji’s property and the barrage of questions that had engaged his mind in foreplay since his feet strayed consciously into what didn’t look like a house that would belong to his friend – someone he had been accommodating in his one room apartment all along. After having dinner at ‘KFC’ where they discussed everything but Deji’s new apartment, it was time to retire for the night as they wearily made their entry into the living room of the new apartment. With parted lips and dilated eyes occurring momentarily, Martins stood in awe for the umpteenth time that evening while taking another critical look at the magnificent apartment Deji had equivocally claimed ownership of. He made a final attempt at unraveling what had become a puzzle to him all evening: “Deji! For Pete’s sake, how on earth did you come about this?” Again, he popped the question and all the answer he got was: “Martins, you should know I’m famished right now and I would really like to hit the bed before sleep slaps me across the face. I will advise you do likewise too. I promise to answer your question first thing tomorrow,” Deji muttered. Well, asides the worries that creased his eyebrows intermittently during the course of their outing and even while he lay tiredly on the divan bed in one of the expansive rooms in Deji’s apartment, he could admit without bias that it was a wonderful Friday. One of the best Fridays Martins had had in a long while. Again for the first time in this new phase of his life, Martins could confidently and excitedly say “TGIF!” Martins quietly got up from the bed as he observed the room with renewed interest for the first time that morning. The bed he had laid on was upholstered, the brown rug that covered the bed area of an already tiled floor had a furry softness underfoot while the mango-wood bedside table had a rough-hewned feel. The bedroom was a sight to behold; a relaxation station of unbroken dreams. If there was any justice in the world, this should be beyond the reach of Deji at least not with his present status albeit Justice was a luxury the world couldn’t afford Now that a new day had come, it was time to discover what Deji had been up to; time to hear what he had to say about this sudden new lease of life that looked too good to be true. The door to his room flung open as a half-dressed pretty young lady stood at the entrance holding a tray. “Good Morning! Breakfast is ready.” The BROUHAHA continues… TEASER: What could Deji be hiding from Martins? Should Martins agree to stay in Deji’s apartment? Make comments

EPISODE TWO At first Martins could not fathom Akon’s presence in Deji’s house until some events began registering in his network busy brain immediately Akon’s alluring anatomy strayed out of his eyes’ scrutiny. “Who would have imagined that the gorgeous and massively endowed lassie once lived in a “face- me- I –slap- you” apartment,” Martins thought aloud. The muscles in his jaw bone noisily contracted on the tasty sandwiches the young sex goddess had offered Martins in his bedroom in skimpy clothes. Lately, unfounded events just kept creeping into his life with the speed of light like he was going to drop dead any moment, still he tried hard to tune himself with reality. Though he knew Deji had a strange fascination for young girls who had a great future behind them, he couldn’t recall Akon and Deji sharing any close relationship during her short-lived stay in his former place of abode but his wandering mind still tried to build a connection. However to do that he had to back-track events; he had to peek at a moment in his immediate past he would rather not recall. As usual he let his mind drift momentarily into outer-space… Asides the frequent hullabaloo between Mama Nkiru and Mama Ruka, Akon was the only side attraction the male tenants of No 5, Kashimawo Street off Isakusa bus stop had gotten accustomed to. Martins could swear the likes of Rotimi, Chris, Baba Ruka, Baba Landlord and even ‘holier than thou’ Fidelis would kill just to have a moment with Akon. Akon had a “please take me if you can” enigma about her personality that left most men trailing in her wake, it was now left to the man to either succumb or take flight. She left most of the men in Martins’ compound ogling like they were under some form of spell. Her life and dispositions during her stint in Baba landlord’s house was a mystery to many and to make matters worse, her only friend in the compound was a reserved and secretive Comfort. Nonetheless Akon was a no-nonsense babe It was a Sunday morning; Martins had had difficulty in keeping up with his company’s new dress policy. His one month grace was over, now he had no excuse whatsoever not to comply anymore. Realty Point limited was fast becoming a strong player in Nigeria’s real estate hub and the nation’s mass housing supply sector at large. Things were beginning to take shape in a company that was steadily becoming a real estate hotspot in the area of services for real estate investors and would-be property owners. Realty Point had risen to a level they never thought they would reach in so little time. Hence appearance to work had become a key factor in the appraisal and continued stay of any staff. Monday was barely twenty-four hours away and Martins was expected to dress formally leaving no stone unturned, anything less and he will be attracting a query from the Human Capital Executive. The laundry guy had just delivered the suit Deji borrowed him last weekend, which meant that for the first time Martins would be adorning a black suit along with a turquoise T.M. Lewin tie, and trousers matching in fabric type and colour. He relished the thought; he knew he couldn’t wait to see the reaction to what he hopes to be an awesome appearance. In his mind’s eye, he could see the ladies drooling… “Dem go hear am” Martins uttered under his breath On Mondays they were only allowed to do two colours of long sleeve shirt; sky blue and sparkling white. He couldn’t even say his sole white shirt had a sparkling feel to it but he was certain it did look creamy when dirty. He had done his laundry three nights ago which meant his white shirt should have been dry and ready to go by now. However, the incessant downpour that Lagos had been experiencing for the past two days only subsided in the wee hours of the morning leaving Martins’ clothes including his white shirt at the mercy of the early morning rising sun, that’s if the celestial flaming ball had come to stay and the heavens be kind enough not to open its flood gates for a troubling outpouring of water. He would probably absorb the wetness left in it with his low-heat Alaba-made Philips’ Iron if the shirt doesn’t get dry before his side of the earth rotates past the sun. All he needed do now was to put out his only white shirt at a vantage position where the rays of light from the rising sun would leach out the wetness from its fabric. That vantage position would be a small extension of iron rod from one of the weakened pillars holding the building. A spot some few metres away from Akon’s room which stood alone, away from the core of the drama in the main building. Baba landlord never gave that place out to outsiders because it was kind of private and was obviously the most befitting room in the compound. In fact it was rumoured that he once hosted his girlfriends there. The room had its own toilet and bathroom; it was more like a self-contained apartment bereft of a kitchen. The Moment Akon moved into the apartment, the tenants did know something was amiss. Just seeing her and the manner at which she went about her life’s devotion laid credence to mama Nkiru’s claim that Baba landlord never collected house rent from her till she left. They weren’t sure though if the duo were having an affair. Akon seemed to have a hidey-hole that shut out her life’s excesses from the spooky eyes of tenants like Mama Nkiru, Mama Ruka and Temisan. Notwithstanding, her charm alone was enough to make Baba landlord will out his entire property to the Calabar goddess. Martins had only just stepped into his room after putting out his white shirt when he caught Deji staring at the girl that had greeted him moments ago from the only window in the room. Though he could only view her backside from where he stood, Martins could tell who the girl was not because their paths had only just crossed nor that she was spotting the same pink towel that left much to be desired but because Akon had a ‘behind’ that Martins would identify even if he were standing atop Oshodi bridge and looking down at a million Nigerian ladies shopping at the old Bolade market.Martins moved close to the window as Deji walked away whistling suspiciously not realizing he had been caught staring. On getting close to the window, Martins could already hear chatters and murmurs from the area close to the only bathroom for tenants in the compound scores of tenants, squatters and even squatters who still harboured squatters were sharing. Reaching the window, Martins was alarmed at the sudden convergence of virile men at the entrance to the bathroom. Still wondering what had changed from the time he left that vicinity to the point he stepped into his room, he only had to look more intensely at the small crowd of men who attempted to form a queue when he suddenly spotted the cause of the mild commotion. Akon was the spectacle! She obviously was going to take her bath when Martins caught Deji staring. It seemed like the men in the building had acted on impulse, as if they had also been peeping lustfully at Akon who had been keeping herself busy around that area. Now every man whose window was angled towards the spot where Akon had been doing her dishes at the back of the house wanted to use the bathroom at the same time. Martins overhead most of them claiming to be late for church and he thought for a moment if he never figured all along that his co-tenants were men that had an undying love for Jesus. Some of them weren’t even holding buckets while two or three other tenants had empty buckets. Even Baba Ruka that is an Islamic faithful also had suddenly turned Christian because Akon was going to use the single general bathroom in the compound for the first time. Deji had left the room too on the guise that he wanted to get water so he could have his bath since he didn’t the previous night like any of the tenants in the compound had the luxury of night baths. On Saturday evening, Akon had complained about the blocked water outlet in her bathroom and the caretaker had told her to use the general bathroom till he could find a plumber to fix it for her. One of the ills of a tenement building is the lack of privacy. Though Akon knew what the retinue of guys that practically besieged her, were up to, Martins could see she had no interest in any of the dogs that her assets had let out. She even had to leave at some point when the stares and side comments were becoming rather unwholesome. The charade ended the moment Akon left, proving that they weren’t anywhere close to been religious afterall. Martins had been amused enough, now it was time to do his chores. He was going to pick his broom when he heard Akon’s loud agonizing voice just as Deji called out to him via the window: “Martins!” “Wetin happen?” Martins retorted. “Akon has ruined your shirt” Deji rejoined. “Yekparipa!” Martins didn’t even wait for Deji to complete the sentence when he ran out like someone sprinting to clinch an Olympic gold medal. Right there at the alleged vantage position drenched in the horrid remains of sticky banga soup was his supposed white shirt. “Ah! Akon! You just became my worst nightmare!”

EPISODE THREE A man without the urge to survive is on a fast lane to the cemetery; a slow death is imminent. We are all products or manifestations of our actions and in actions, experiences, mind plays and thought process. No man was born a failure neither were some born successes, we all attempt to carve a niche for ourselves regardless of the shortcomings of our forefathers. However there are some who are not so fortunate, those whose early days and struggles have been pre-determined. Akon was such person. Two hours after she made her ill-planned entry into mother earth, even as a tabula rasa Akon already had the premonition it was going to be a stormy ride. The first home she knew, asides her helpless and demented teenage mother’s womb was a dump-site in Adamawa State. She spent her later days in an orphanage in Mubi until she had to flee in the company of some women when that place was ran over by the misguided blood thirsty Boko haram terrorist group. After years of lack, abuse, depression and every unimaginable mishap that can befall a lonely orphaned teenager, she finally made her way to the centre of excellence. She was guided through her new phase of life in lasgidi by her bosom friend and classmate Comfort who was then living with her wealthy uncle at lekki, until she was thrown out of the house by the wife who had become uncomfortable with her presence. Akon got a housekeeping job that ensured she completed her secondary school education that had gone on a-year hiatus after she was displaced from the orphanage- the only place that gave her succour. However Akon knew she needed to go the extra mile to survive life in a harsh terrain such as lasgidi. Though she had completed her secondary school education, Akon was too intelligent and ambitious to settle for an ordinary senior secondry school leaving certificate. She was born to survive…she was a survivor! And survive she would. She had to stoop low to conquer! Even if that low meant dehumanization. After all the men had been taking her to bed forcefully, in fact they didn’t have to be in bed to take her. She had been getting attention from men since her 11th birthday and ever since the attention has not dwindled one bit. It has gotten worse by the years. So when she thought of survival only one thing came to mind. Getting paid by the high and mighty in the society to do the only thing men wanted her for. She had the connections and growing up way too fast was an extra edge in her curriculum vitae. She only needed to do it for a while till her fortunes change, so she thought. She had left Baba Landlord’s house when she gained admission to study Law a year ago. Now Akon was in her 2nd year in the University of Lagos and she was only 20, though she looked older than her age. Deji had secretly been on her case since their paths crossed. Though Akon was no sucker for guys except she stood to gain lot from that guy, she liked Deji to some degree. That notwithstanding she wanted him to break a sweat for as long as possible to be worth her commitment. Moreover she was not yet ready to let any guy in on her other life. Here she was in Deji’s cozy bedroom lying in his king-sized bed. Everything was still a surprise to her. Deji’s new status was somewhat the reason she agreed to date him. However after just two weeks into their relationship she had started imagining spending the rest of her life with him. For the first time in her life she was encountering a guy that could make her part with her old ways, burn bridges then turn a new leaf. Akon’s attention switched from the ceiling to the bedside on her immediate right. Deji had just completed his morning devotion. Akon wondered how he could still maintain a relationship with God whilst he wallowed in sin “These Christians sef! “She thought aloud. Deji got up from his side of the bed in an attempt to leave the room “Dude, where are you going?” Akon quipped “Want to check up on my friend, we’ve got some unfinished business from last night”. Akon appears to be displeased “Haba! Stay with me a while naw”, she pleaded. “I’m sure he’s still having breakfast or probably lost in thought” “I will be with you soon dear….just a couple of minutes”, Deji is not fazed. He walks out of the room with calculated strides as he makes his way to the dinning. He walks into the dinning to find Martins staring aloofly into space.Martins! Martins!! Martins!!! Martins is startled as what sounded like off-beat unsynchronized bellows instantaneously snaps his mind out of oblivion. “What! Why are you screaming my name like we are in a shrine?”, Martins yells disquietly Deji is taken aback at Martins’ rejoinder “What’s wrong with you?” “What do you mean what’s wrong with me?” Martins retorts Deji is slightly shocked by Martins’ response“Why are you getting worked up already?” “Martins, do you know how long I’ve been standing here? When did you start partaking in soul travel?” “Soul travel huh? Deji, between you and I who stands more risk of converting to an Eckist? The boyfriend of an Eckist or the friend to the boyfriend of an eckist?” Martins queried “Hey dude! do you have to bring Akon into this?” He draws close to him and gives his shoulder a nudge. “I was only trying to calm your strained nerves. Why do you have a veil of wrinkles on your countenance?”, Deji asked sarcastically “Deji don’t attempt to confuse me with words, you know I’m still at a loss here…you don’t tell me anything anymore. I thought we were friends?” “I thought so too” Deji replied carelessly “What do you mean you thought so too?” Martins demanded. “Martins, when were you going to tell me about Aisha?” Deji asked softly Deji! Like seriously? This is about Aisha? Martins asked disappointedly Deji smiles sheepishly, having realized his faux pas. He tries to redeem his image Got you there!….Of course it’s not, just pulling your legs as usual Martins ignores him. “Deji! Where in the world did you and Akon collide? What’s going on here?” Martins is distraught The tone of his voice relays slight uneasiness as he speaks… “First it was the house, now its Akon. Deji, do I really know who you are? Is there something I’m missing? All those times you go for days only to show up out of the blues”. “Deji the drone! Deji Omoakin! Martins hails him with a tinge of sarcasm. What else don’t I know about you?”, he inquired The last time Martins addressed Deji in a manner that should mundanely drum up worries was in their final days at the Polytechnic in Ibadan when Aisha parted ways with Deji. “Enough of the preambles Martins, I know where this is going? So no further dilly dallying.” “The house? How I came about it?” he addressed Martins with intent. Martins nods his head “You remember the hit at Zenith last month?” “You mean the Robbery incident?” “Yes.” “What about it?”, Martins asked curiously “I dey the set-up, na me promote the cause. Na your guy Deji arrange the matter” “I don’t get you Deji. As in…you were the informant or you supplied arms for the operation?” “No sir!”, Deji cuts in. “I was a part of the robbery” Martins skin suddenly went pale like an aspen leaf lost in the harmattan wind. He looked as frightened as a child who had just been caught by the boogey man Holy Moses! The Brouhaha continues

EPISODE FOUR Akon bolted into Deji’s living room in an attempt to dissuade Martins from leaving “Martins you honestly can’t be leaving your friend because he is a yahoo guy naa! Yahoo yahoo no be today, e don tey, na brain work. At least you now know he was only trying to be mischievous with the armed robbery tingy. Give yourself a break dude. Don’t take things too personal.” “Deji does that all the time. He’s just too full of mischief. If he’s into yahoo, yahoo today, you never can tell what he’s capable of tomorrow. To even joke with that kind of thing means he has given armed robbery a thought too. What is the difference anyways? A yahoo guy and an armed robber are both means to the same end.”Martins concluded. “So which one cum dey pain you for the whole matter now? That your friend is a yahoo guy or that he scared the living daylights out of you when he joked about his involvement in armed robbery?”Akon inquired Abeg Akon, free me! No be so oh! You should be happy for him oh! No be say he carry gun abi he do money rituals. Please, biko you can’t leave him in this state. The dude is heartbroken Martins would hear none of it. His mind was made up. The conversation that ensued between Martins and Akon before he finally left Deji’s house that morning stayed on auto-playback back mode in his head while he settled at his desk. Though he had no options as to where to put up, he still left Deji’s house anyways. It was a Monday. Martins was back to his work, back to his life’s quest after a horrid weekend. Martins realized he had been dormant for a while; he needed a reality check to keep abreast with the situation at the office. As usual Tinu and Lola had put their chit chat in full throttle. Martins sometimes wondered if the duo stood the risk of being condemned to death if they didn’t display their talking prowess. As he took his eyes off his colleagues, his emotions began to have the better of him yet again. Martins’ eyes had welled up with tears on his way to work that morning. Again, he fought back the tears in his eyes knowing it was a day that needed none of it. The last time he felt this way must have been ten years ago when he lost his best friend, Ayo, to a road mishap he was involved in two days to his 20th birthday. He thought for a moment if his sojourn through life from his day of birth to that very second he had to think about it, was worth celebrating. Martins was quick to forget that his heart leaped for joy when he got his present job after years of being filled with a hope that hoped on with no end in sight. How ungrateful can man be? With the average life expectancy of Nigerians put at 54, Martins should count himself as one of the lucky ones that reached the three decade threshold in one peace. Not-withstanding the many setbacks that his life had willingly made a companion, it was nothing compared to the close shave he had with death along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway ten years earlier; in an accident that had taken his friend’s life. There was still some fight in him even though he was trying hard to be a jackass.“My landlord rants gives me headache”,Lola complaints drummed in martins ears. Hearing Lola rant about her landlord to Tinu drew Martins attention to his colleagues for the umpteenth time that morning. “Someone should tell this Lola girl that her rants give me migraine,”Martins muttered, hoping she would hear him and stop talking. Ibrahim, from the customer service desk walked in at the moment to offer Martins some respite. “Mr Martins, one Deji is here to see you,”he announced. “De..Deji!”Martins stuttered. Visibly confused at why Deji would trail him to the office. “Yes.”Ibrahim replied as he made for the door. “What does he want this time?”Martins pondered. The janitor opened the door before Ibrahim could get to the knob, and announced loudly. “Mr. Martins, you get gift for reception,” “Gift?”Martins asked, further confused at what is day was turning into. “Who know you?”Tinu broke away from her conversation with Lola to address Martins. “Na byday cake,”Musa interjected “Birthday ke? You sure say na the message wey dem send you, you deliver so?”Tinu asked. “From who?”Martins quizzed, rising up this time. “Dem say her name na Aisha,”Musa asserted “So today na your birthday you no tell us, ehn, Martins,”Lanre, who has been silent all through, chipped in “Hmm…Even the shy and reserved Martins has a woman in his life. Lanre you see your life for railway line? Happy birthday jare, Martins,”Lola said in an attempt to mock Lanre “Abeg! Abeg! Lola no just bring that leg…today na Monday abeg.”Lanre warned. “Oh please! You guys should stop this your vernacular naa…this is a corporate environment”Johnson walked in just in time to hear the last words from Lanre. “Wetin dey worry this one,”Lanre charged. Ada’s loud footsteps announced her entry into the office, the noise in the office did not give anyone any hint that their boss was on the way. They all stood affixed to a spot immediately they spotted her. “Martins when were you planning to tell us today is your birthday. Oya give me my phone, yeye boy” Ada said as she entered the office. Almost immediately the popular Nokia ringtone rends the air. The phone had been ringing all along but everyone in the office had been oblivious to it. “Martins pick your call jare!” ,Lola said vehemently, in a way to save her own face. This was the second time Lola would prompt Martins to pick his call. It was becoming pretty difficult for him to get accustomed to Ada’s ringtone. She had borrowed him earlier after Martins had requested for it to make some calls. He only had to slot in his sim-card. Ada had really become friendly towards Martins since he helped her broker the last deal. Martins quickly picked the call. “Hello!” “Good morning. Is that Mr. Martins?” “Yes sir, who is this?” “Engr Funsho Adetukasi, I got your number from a flier a friend of mine offered me yesterday at a function” “Oh! cool!”Martins responded eagerly “So you are a marketer for…” “Realty Point sir,”Martins cuts in “I have done some background checks on you guys and I think I might be needing your services.” “Not might sir…You will be needing our services,”Martins said excitedly Martins response attracts giggles from the Engineer on the other end of the phone. “I can see you are a very optimistic person. About the land at Ibeju Lekki…If the terms are right and the land there is worth the buy I may be needing up to 4 acres of land.” At this point Martins was trying hard not to be betrayed by his emotions. His voice was becoming inaudible “Sorry I didn’t get that sir, did you say 4 acres?”Martins was in a near state of shock. The mention of ‘4 acres’ made everyone in the room draw close to Martins’ ear, in an attempt to eavesdrop on his phone conversation. “I don’t think this is a conversation that should be done on phone. Can I send my P.A to your office tomorrow morning?” “No sir, sorry I meant Sure sir, by what time sir!”Martins asked expectantly. “He will be free by 9, and Ikeja to Maryland barring traffic shouldn’t take him more than 15minutes” “Okay sir, its fine.” “Tomorrow then” The stranger hung up before Martins could say“Yes sir, thank you sir” “4 acres!”Martins exclaimed under his breath. “Martins did you just say 4 acres abi you no know wetin be 4 acres again?”Lanre quizzed Ignoring him, Martins slowly walks out of the office like someone in a trance while his colleagues look on with their mouths agape.

EPISODE FIVE Martins was beginning to feel a sudden ecstatic pull towards his job. He now had every reason to believe he was destined for greatness. The dream he had that first night he spent at Deji’s apartment was gradually coming to fruition. The prophet did see a vision of him after all. Why God had chosen him for the biggest deal a marketer would strike for realty point…Martins still couldn’t fathom. And he had only just joined them, in fact his employment wasn’t confirmed yet. It seemed God had realized it was time he reaped where he had sowed. He had been just, true and patient, now his virtues were to be rewarded. “When this deal goes through, I would be eternally grateful to you, o lord!” Martins said a silent word of prayer to a God he had always challenged for the detours his life had taken. “I’ll bet after this deal goes through, my ranks here would swell”,he spoke aloud to no one in particular. He was the only person in the office anyways. The other marketers had gone out to meet with their prospects. This would be Martins second sales since he joined the company and possibly his first outright sales. He was only days away from closing up his deal with Engr. Adetukasi and he couldn’t wait to earn a commission that would change his life forever. He had to slap himself hard across the face to be sure he wasn’t dreaming this time. “Martins!”Ada called out to him as she gracefully walked into Martins’ office unannounced “Hope you still have all of this on low key? You won’t want to lose out on the deal at the last minute oh! Human beings are wicked.” “No Ada, I’m in check…this can’t slip off me” “Good!” There was an unusual silence between them as Ada looked around the office with oddity. Martins pretended to be looking into some files on his corner desk of compact iteration which provided an extra leg room for him. Ada remained affixed at a spot behind Martins, while chewing on her lower lips. Then she focuses her gaze on Martins with bemoaned interest like he had become a monument of sober reflection and a recipe for disaster. She thought for a moment how naive he was to trust her. Ada had been in constant communication with the Engineer after she had copied his contact from the phone she had borrowed Martins on his birthday. This was bound to be a life-changing deal and Ada hoped it won’t backfire and later become her greatest undoing; she risked losing her job if her plan fails. She had been on this kind of road before only that in this case it wasn’t just any road but a major highway, still she was ready to take the risk. “If Aisha was no match for you, how much more Martins?”Ada’s alter ego seemed to assure her as she quickly dismissed her fears. Her gaze lingered on for a while till Martins broke the silence between the duo. “Ada, do you need me to do something?” “No! Not at all. I was just checking up on you,” Ada stated as she walked out of the office. Martins is intrigued, not even the drumming of Ada’s loud footsteps down the hallway as it quietened into her office could bring him out of his bemusement. Martins thought Ada felt a bit jittery with the unspoken drama she put up before she left him to his thoughts. Martins’ mind raced to his first encounter with Ada when he came on the job; it was a forgettable experience. Albeit, Ada’s attitude towards Martins was gradually transcending from boss-subordinate to colleague and close confidant yet Martins still tried to hold her at arm’s length or so he thought. Ada’s sudden fondness for Martins would have aroused his suspicion if she wasn’t the head of marketing and he hadn’t been instrumental in sealing her last deal. Ada had shared her commission with Martins twice but Martins still wondered if he was under any obligation to share this with her. This was completely his and Ada had no stakes in it. However, Martins knew he had to at least spare a paltry sum for her useful and timely tit bits and of course her frequent admonitions. He had put everyone except Ada in the dark about this deal. Like Ada warned; he had to be discreet about the deal until he was sure he would turn out a millionaire. The prophet was indeed true to his word, Martins secretly hoped that divine favour would remain his lot. He suddenly remembered it was a Thursday, he had to borrow some money from Ada for the weekend. At the close of work on Monday, Martins had lodged in a cheap hotel around Ajegunle. And by the end of the day, it would be Martins’ fourth night at the hotel. He had exhausted all in his arsenals; he needed a replenishing. He rises from his desk and made bold strides out of his office. In less than half a minute, Martins was in front of Ada’s office. He only had to knock on her door once before he helped himself in. Ada was just rounding off a phone conversation or so it seemed, when Martins walked into her office. “Err…Engineer let me call you back,”Ada stuttered.Martins’ presence slightly made her uneasy, she wasn’t sure if she had goofed with the last line of her conversation. The mention of ‘Engineer’ raced Martins thoughts to his client, Engr. Adetukasi momentarily. The man had still not answered nor returned his call all day yet Martins had called him five times already. If not that he knew the Engineer to be a very busy man Martins’ usual self would have had every cause to worry. “Yes Martins, What is it you want?”Ada asked, quickly regaining her composure “Sorry to bother you. I was wondering if I could get a loan of 10k from you, I will pay you back by the end of next week.” “10k?” “Yeah.” “I need to sort out some things this weekend.” “Sure! Why not? As long as you pay me back by the end of next week like you said” “I surely will,”Martins concurred “I still have your account details, so I will just do a transfer as usual.” “Ok ma. Thank you, I really do appreciate.” “Haba! 10K?”Ada said, rising from her seat this time.“What’s the big deal? I mean what are friends for?”She rests her hands on Martins’ shoulders which instantaneously sends cold chills down his spine as she walks him to the door. “Martins, don’t worry, I always got your back,”Ada said, smiling sheepishly at Martins Martins grins, not quite understanding what exactly she meant as Ada shuts her door behind him. “Poor boy! If only he knows 10k is nothing compared to what he’s about to lose. It isn’t his deal anyways. Like a boss of mine once said; he who seals the deal owns the deal.”Ada thought aloud while standing in front of her simple but elegant and stylish glass desk, with a pellucid surface that Ada often times used as a mirror more than she used it for work. She sometimes feared the crystal clear surface could one day be translucent enough to reveal the true state of her heart to a bystander. She picked up her phone on the neatly arranged pile of files at the semi circular portion of the glass desk. With a sigh of relief amid a cloak of smirk on her face, she dials the Engineers’ number. “Hello Engineer, sorry I had to end the call. Can we meet now?”

EPISODE SIX Martins hated to stroll into Ajegunle at night; the place sends shivers down his spine. Again the traffic congestion that besieged major roads in Lagos was a hurdle he had to painfully and constantly cross even after a long and stressful day at work. Martins dreaded the thought of going back home after a long’s day’s job not because the condition of the hotel he lodged in was sub-par but because the location of the hotel was a nightmare. He had only stayed there for four nights yet Ajegunle was a jungle of some sort; a haven for criminals in his mind’s eye. The night life in Ajegunle terrified him. It was some minutes past eight when Martins walked past a hood which had men of unscrupulous characters, who were more active at night, smoking marijuana. He had his heart in his mouth as he made his way to the street that led to his hotel. Martins was alarmed at the convergence of jobless youths and ill- mannered teenagers that formed clusters on the untarred road covering the entire length of the street. He wondered why people that engaged in idle talks and never took a bath during the day sowed their wild oats and became bulls at night. The young female faces that usually lacked colour when Martins stepped out to work in the morning had seemingly become a sight to behold. However his nose was having a hard time differentiating the stench that emanated from the Open engorged sewers and the valley of garbage that were the hallmark of the neighbourhood, from the pungent fragrances of the cheap perfume the scantily dressed females that walked aimlessly around the streets had bathe themselves in. The pollutants that filled the air Martins breathed reminded him of Nadia, his Hausa classmate back in the days. By the time he gets to his lodge, Martins was certain he would be without a sense of smell. At another spot close to the bog –filled gutters were two kids, the eldest couldn’t have been more than 6 years yet they were left alone to jump gutters at that time of the night. Martins wondered where the boy’s parents were. He didn’t have to wonder for too long when a woman who had been walking behind Martins all along called out to one of the kids. “Kinimose!” “Ma!” The older kid replied “What? Did I hear well? Did that woman just call her son by that name?” Martins said under his breath “Kinimose? Some Parents are wicked sha…what could that boy have done to deserve such name?” He pondered. Kinimose in English means “what have I done?” and Martins just couldn’t fathom why the innocent child was assigned such name. It just didn’t click! As Martins was making a turn at the bend that led to his guest house, he saw a couple come out of the hotel. The duo walked far too close for comfort as the man held on to the lady tightly like she was some conquest. Martins had met the man in the hotel the day he moved in. He had also noticed that the middle age man had a different girl every other night, albeit his latest acquaintance looked quite young. Martins could swear the young lady wasn’t 18 yet. However that was the least of his worries. What baffled Martins more was that the girl was heavily pregnant. Martins shook his head in disgust at the thought of what would have transpired between the duo under the sheets in the shameless man’s hotel room; he shook his head so hard that his neck cringed in protest. He took his eyes off the love struck outlaws as he made his entry into the reception just in time to eavesdrop on the conversation between the two hotel attendants who were alone at the reception at the time. “That Alhaji dey use those girls wey him dey carry for juju, with all those rings for him hand” Hadiza, the female hotel attendant opined “But wetin go make am carry pregnant girl now?” Ekene, Hadiza’s male colleague asked in a concerned tone. “You no ask say wetin the girl dey do with am abi you think say that babe na human being? Na her fourth pregnancy she dey carry so” “Na lie!” Ekene opens his mouth agape, shocked at the revelation “Person wey don tear eye since J.S 2,” Hadiza continued “You know am?” Ekene quipped. “Who no know stella for this yonder? Na her hobby be that now. Na every guy for area don cross am” “Ehn, Ehn… abeg I no follow oh” Ekene echoed his disagreement “Who you be? Ekene, who know you abi wetin you sabi sef? You be jew naa…” Hadiza said in a bid to ridicule his colleague. “Hadiza wetin bring that kain talk, I don tell you say make you no dey call me jew again. Make I no do you strong thing for this place.” “Huh! You? Omo Igbo, you wan do me strong thing? Soro niyen sha? With this your thin frame?” Hadiza bursts into laughter just as Martins who had been lazing around the entrance to the reception approaches them. “Hmm…babe you are harsh oh! Na Man you wash like that?” Martins questioned Hadiza “Ah Oga, Good night…I mean good evening” Hadiza is embarrassed Martins had overhead her verbose witticism at Ekene. She evades his knowing looks as she suddenly gets busy. “Good evening” Martins slowly responded to Hadiza’s greetings with a smirk on his face “Bros good evening“ “Good evening Ekene” Martins answered in between loud yawns “E be like say today hold up bloody?” Ekene asked “You can say that again. In fact I’m really exhausted right now” “Sorry oh…Na your key be this” Ekene hands Martins his key “Thank you! Wetin happen wey light dey today?” Martins asked Ekene while resting on the counter that separated the attendants from Martins. “Bros dem just bring am oh, dem fit take am anytime. You know say this Nepa people way no pure.” “Abeg make them never take am oh. At least make dem wait till 10 when una go on una gen. Sebi una still get fuel?” Martins said as he made to leave for his room. “E be like” Ekene replied “Abeg make una go find oh, if una no get” Martins took the flight of stairs adjoining the reception to his room on the second floor. He inserted the key into the keyhole and turned the knob clock-wisely as the door opened ajar. The moment Martins opened the door the inevitable happened; the lights went out. “Oh God! Nepa!” Martins howled in displeasure. He needed the light badly to cool off after the marathon hold up that left him wondering for a moment if hell would be better than living and surviving in Lagos. Martins heard loud hisses and silent complaints down the hallway by some aggrieved hoteliers. He exhaled audibly in an avalanche of sadness laced with tiredness, having confirmed he wasn’t the only one that needed the light after all. He quickly put on the torch on his phone when it appeared unseen shadows were gnawing at him in the darkness. Martins couldn’t stay one minute more in the room. He took out his shoes then changed into something more comfortable as he walked out of his room. He heads for the reception after locking the door behind him. On getting to the reception, he finds Ekene and Hadiza talking in muffled sound. If Martins didn’t know any better he would have thought they were an item “What are you guys up to this time?” Martins asked the duo “Ah nothing oh!” Hadiza said rather suspiciously “Eeyah! Them don drive you comot for your room” Ekene addressed Martins, deviating from the initial question “Yes oh, I no fit stay for that place, make I no go die of suffocation” Martins replied. Martins stepped out of the hotel, making his way back to the street. Hoping to calm his frayed nerves with a bottle of chilled malta guiness, Martins walked tiredly to a bar on the other side of the road just opposite his hotel. Somewhere close to the bar, Martins could observe a cluster of mean looking youths with blood-shot eyes. Getting to the foot of the bar, Martins dilemma immediately reached crescendo level. All he could see were men who seemed to live a thug life talking loudly like they had scores to settle with some persons of higher power. Martins feared a civil war was in the offing as he uncomfortably reclined into one of the few empty plastic chairs in the crowded bar. He knew he had to leave Ajegunle by the end of the weekend if he still loved his life. For a moment Martins thought he heard gun-shots from a distant or probably he was beginning to hear echoes in his head as a result of the environment he found himself. Almost immediately, a haphazardly dressed teenager ran past the bar like he had just seen the ghost of the much talked about town’s dead witch doctor. “Area!!! AK boys don show oh!” The teenager exclaimed profusely at the top of his voice. Martins looked around him in an attempt to identify who the teenager referred to as ‘area’ forgetting for a moment that he ought to be running for his dear life instead. However, it was hard to tell as the bar was already in disarray after the sudden red alert. The gun-shots that Martins thought he heard drew closer and louder as the crowd in the bar made an attempt to run for their dear lives. Though he was utterly dumbfounded at the commotion that ensued and even watched as a young man fled the bar and dived into the lagoon that bordered the bar, still Martins bum remained glued to his seat. A fast moving police van swerved from the untarred road on the street into the entrance to the bar while crashing into some plastic chairs. Sporadic shootings rend the air as people scampered for safety. It was then it dawned on Martins that there was indeed trouble brewing in the air. Martins rose from his seat in a flash and had taken to his heels when several police men jumped out of the van. He ran into one of them as he managed to buck him. “Stop there! I said stop there!” A cop yelled at Martins Martins tarried on. The cop hits him on the head with a baton as Martins fell on his knees shrieking in pain The police man hits him again and again, this time with his rifle as he collapses and gradually goes blank.

EPISODE SEVEN A scenic view of arguably the biggest ghetto in Nigeria would lay credence to its notoriety. A place where the quest for survival is at its highest. In Ajegunle the average young girl is expected to become a mother before her 18th birthday. You can live in ‘AJ’ for free but what happens afterwards can’t be guaranteed. This was the third time in one month mobile police men popularly called ‘AK boys’ will be raiding Ajegunle community and this time around Martins was caught in the web. Martins was lucky to be alive, the near fatal incident that reared its ugly head the previous night would have gone more awry than it did. In a split second he would have been dead, in fact he initially thought he was. He wasn’t even sure which of the scenarios would have suited him most; passing out in no man’s territory after the attack on him or being bundled into the waiting police van which could mean ending in prison for being around a gathering of criminals. They say when faced with two evils, choose the lesser unfortunately that choice wasn’t his that night. Martins was grateful to God that the good Samaritans he had built a bond with during his 5 day stint at the hotel in Ajegunle had come to his rescue. If not for Ekene and Hadiza’s timely intervention, the ghetto boys could have thought him dead and thrown him into the bordering lagoon. That would have been a fatal fate. After what transpired that night, Martins had no other choice than to leave the ghetto city and he was left with only one alternative; going back to Deji’s house temporarily till his multi-million naira deal pulled through. A coca cola truck blared his horn dangerously behind the bus Martins boarded, rudely detaching his being from his thoughts. Though coping with the Saturday evening traffic along Ikorodu road was a major challenge, having to endure the noise pollution that had an alliance with the gridlock was way too much to handle. What even numbed Martins’ senses more was enduring all that while seated at the last column of seats in the danfo bus he boarded Martins was on his way to Leisure mall Surulere to honour his long-awaited date with Aisha but he had to first stop over at Deji’s to drop his bag. He had promised to take Aisha out to celebrate his belated birthday and he was really looking forward to the date. Aisha had done nothing but showed Martins immense affection and had been a source of encouragement to him since they re-united, and sharing dinner with her coupled with a time out at the cinemas was Martins own way of showing appreciation. The rickety danfo bus Martins travelled in managed to maneuver its way out of the heart-wrenching gridlock, though the bus still stood stiff opposition from a BRT bus and the monstrous coca cola truck. Martins thought the presence of both heavy weight vehicles intimidated their rickety danfo bus and if care was not taken they would probably be taken off the road completely. He couldn’t bear the thought of that happening because that would mean double tragedy. The BRT bus roared its engine as it made reckless swerves along the narrow road. It was its turn to blare his horns which sounded like a cracked audio of a compact disc. As if acting on cue, other vehicles trapped in the traffic followed suit like they were in a horn blaring competition producing a cacophony of deafening sounds. The danfo bus moved slightly in consonance to the horrifying sound as a young female commuter who sat at the far left end of the back seat where Martins was cursed out loudly “This BRT Man dey mad ni abi which kain gobe be this?” The young lady was obviously at the receiving end of the hooting sound from the BRT and the other vehicles around. The Coca cola truck surged forward causing a bit of apprehension among the commuters in the bus then suddenly intensified his momentum as it appeared to be heading on a collision course with the bus this time. The suddenness of the trucks acceleration towards the danfo whipped the commuters including Martins into a state of frenzy, further distorting their senses while nearby hawkers scampered for safety. Tires screeched making ugly marks on the tarred road as the coca cola truck emitted grayish-black exhaust fumes laced with carbon monoxide. It seemed the driver of the truck was having a hard time locating his brakes as his feet further hits the accelerator. The truck comes to a screeching halt just before it was going to make direct impact with the bus. The truck driver’s recklessness attracted verbose attack from commuters from various works of life in the danfo. “Olori buruku” “Omo ale jati jati!” “Wayo Allahna!” “Chinenke! Which kain animal be dis?” “Na God go punish you” Curses and insults rained on the truck driver concurrently with reckless abandon from the passengers in the danfo bus as all concerned finally heave a sigh of relief. Moments later the danfo had finally scaled through the hurdle posed by the traffic and had begun his final lap on a road of less vehicular movement between Fadeyi and Ojuelegba. All Martins could think about in the commotion that ensued was the 3.5 million naira commission he was bound to earn from the outright sales of 4 acres of land to the Engineer which was almost a done deal and his date with the pretty Aisha. He was happy the accident was averted as he momentarily took his eyes off the happenings in the danfo bus back to the road. He watched with pity as Pedestrians stood helplessly by the pavement adjoining the road like they were awaiting a firing squad. Seeing the agony on their faces offered him a means of distraction from his line of thought. For the remainder of the frustrating ride, Martins had a hard time understanding how easy traffic jam had become a menace in Lagos making itself lord over most roads even on a Saturday. Martins finally arrived at Surulere at about 5:45pm after spending three hours in traffic. He still couldn’t believe he was going back to Deji’s apartment albeit he was confident he wouldn’t be there by the end of the new week. On getting to Deji’s compound Martins felt a strange uneasiness. “Where is that strange noise coming from?” he wondered. As he approached Deji’s door he needed no soothsayer to tell him all wasn’t well within the walls of the apartment. He only needed to knock once when a disturbed and ruffled Deji with blood stains on his hands and T-shirt came to the impact resistant steel door. Martins heart skipped a beat. He was taken aback momentarily by Deji’s appearance while his roving eyes searched for an explanation to the blood stains on his friend. “Welcome home brother! Thank God you are here.” Martins thought the man that stood before him didn’t look like a brother, and what he saw behind Deji surely didn’t look like home, however it did explain the blood stains on him. Deji’s living room was a complete mess! And lying Right at the middle of the expansive living room was a hapless female. “Oh my God! Deji, what have you done this time?”

EPISODE EIGHT If Deji were a stranger to Martins, he would have thought he ran a shrine in his apartment. His living room looked like it had suffered from a tremor, while the female who was lying in a pool of her own blood appeared lifeless. Deji was indeed full of surprises and if Martins had a premonition of the dangers that laid ahead at Deji’s that night he would have opted to spend the night under the bridge at Ojuelegba instead. Walking into the apartment was much of a challenge to him since he wasn’t sure what he was walking into. “Thank God Aisha called in to cancel our engagement, how would I have explained this to her?” Martins said under his breath Again, for the second time in 48 hours Martins had found himself in a dilemma. He was having a hard time understanding why fortune was suddenly making faces at him at a time he was close to sealing the biggest deal of his life. “Maybe all these things are happening because I’m close to my breakthrough,” he hoped. He wished he had been in Deji’s house earlier; probably he would have been able to avert the ugly incident and subsequently the impending doom. Based on Deji and Akon’s account on what transpired in the apartment that led to the blood-letting, Stella ought to be held accountable for the mishap that occurred while she was making an attempt on Akon’s life. However the only eye-witnesses around at the time of the crime were the two love birds, Deji and Akon. The implication of this is that the duo would have a hard time proving that they directly had nothing to do with it not even when the incident occurred in Deji’s house. Though Martins found their version of the incident believable, albeit the Nigerian Judicial System works in diverse ways that can make an innocent man confess a crime he never committed with aplomb and ingenuity. “Akon, If Stella doesn’t make it out of this hospital alive, we will be in deep shit” Deji’s proclamation diverted Martins thoughts to his friend. Martins looked up at Deji from his seating position for a moment. Deji had been restless since they arrived at the hospital almost 2 hours ago and had not stopped pacing around the hospital’s waiting room ever since. After stealing occasional glances at his friend, Martins could tell Deji was more scared about the possibility of Stella dying in the hospital than been held for a crime committed in his apartment. “If Stella doesn’t come out of this hospital alive then it would mean you guys have no case at all” Martins chipped in. “Exactly bro…No one to prove neither of us stabbed her” Deji concurred “Who would believe our story?” Akon added “At least Martins does” Deji said while taking a quick glance at Martins to be sure he was right about him. “Well, unfortunately he doesn’t work with the Nigerian Police force neither is he part of our Judiciary system. Deji, what if she even comes out of the hospital and fails to corroborate our story? Have you thought about that?” “Why would she want to do that?” Martins quizzed them. “ Of course to get back at us” Akon quipped “She wouldn’t dare. Regardless of what happened back at the house, it doesn’t change the fact that Stella is a good person” Deji countered “Oh so you know? You knew that Deji, yet you went on to betray her” Martins said disappointedly “Martins please don’t start. Don’t get melodramatic here” According to Deji, Stella had come uninvited into his apartment to confront Deji about his sudden cold attitude towards her not knowing that a rude shock awaited her. After finding it pretty difficult to come to terms with Deji’s deceit, infidelity and betrayal of their relationship, she had taken to attacking Akon -her presumed enemy, this was after an altercation with Deji had resulted in the violation of his living room. Martins thought for a moment what his testimony would be like if he was made to stand in the witness box as his thoughts trailed back to the discovery at Deji’s apartment two hours earlier. “Deji, is that the body of a human being or an animal?” “What kind of question is that?” “Deji, you open up your door to me and the first thing that meets my eye is a bloodied female in your living room and you think you don’t need some explaining to do?” “Please Martins don’t compound my woes, I’m trying to think straight here. Can you at least come in?” “Come in where? You want me to walk into a murder?” “Who said there’s a murder? Martins just because you now know I’m a wire boy doesn’t mean I’m also capable of murder, haba!” “Honestly, right now I don’t know what to believe about you anymore” Martins said as he took a closer look at the body. “Please Deji tell me that person lying there is not dead” “I don’t know Martins” “What do you mean you don’t know?” “Please just go there and see for yourself” “That isn’t Akon, right?” Martins finally walks cautiously into the living room as he draws close to the body. “Stella? Oh my God! What happened here?” Martins immediately goes on his knees as he bends over the body. He examines the body with trembling hands “ Deji what are you still doing? Common let’s take her to the hospital” Deji saunters to the dinning to get his car keys as Akon scampers into the living room carrying a bowl of water with some bandages “Martins! Thank God you are here” “And what are you doing with those? Does the person lying here look like she would need any of those?” “I didn’t know what to do and Deji’s has not being of any help either. He’s been acting like a sissy” “Martins, you sure she’s not dead” Deji interjected feeling embarrassed by Akon’s remarks “No sir, she’s still breathing but she will be dead soon if we don’t take her out of here.” “Can we at least try to stop the bleeding?” Akon asked Martins tries to examine the knife wounds close to Stella’s chest region “Gosh! This is deep! What really happened here? Who stabbed her between the both of you?” “She did?” Deji replied “Akon?” “No, Stella” “You mean she tried to commit suicide” “She tried to stab Akon then she tripped and was fell by her own weapon” “She fell directly on the knife” Akon added “Please Martins can we just take her to the hospital first. We can go through the details later.” Deji said as his agitation mounts “Do you drive well now?” Martins inquired “Yes I do” “You have your car keys?” Deji rummages his pockets with his hands “In my pocket” “Then help me with the body, let’s take her in your car” Within a minute the trio were on their way to the hospital in Deji’s new car with half-dead Stella at the back seat alongside Akon. Deji was behind the wheels while Martins settled for the passenger’s seat. The loud noise from a siren at the parking lot of the hospital interrupted Martins’ thoughts. The Doctor who the trio awaited for over an hour finally makes his appearance at the waiting room as Deji immediately walks up to him. “Doctor, hope she’s fine?” “I’m sorry…em…em, Mr Deji but…em…” The abrupt appearance of a nurse in the hospital who had raced alarmingly into the waiting room interrupted the Doctor’s discussion with Deji “Doctor! There’s an emergency! It’s Senator Ibitoye”

EPISODE NINE Leisure mall was a beehive of activities which had Lagosians from all works of life besieging the place like it had become a repertoire of unbroken dreams. Every fun section of the mall had a multitude of people in attendance. The crowd there stunned Martins so much that he wondered if he must have missed an announcement on National TV that the world was going to end the next day. He decided to pitch his tent at a more sane section of the mall while he waited for his date for what seemed like forever. It was a Sunday – a day after the unfortunate incident at Deji’s apartment. Martins had managed to get away from the drama and the controversy that ensued. Though Deji was still in Police custody, Martins was sure he would be released the moment Stella recovers well enough to give the police her own account of the incident back at Deji’s apartment which hopefully will let Deji off the hook. All Martins wanted to think of now was his outing at the mall. Finally he could have his much awaited date with Aisha and probably still have ample time to check on Deji at the police station. Martins took a quick glance at his wrist watch. “6:45pm! Where the heck is this Aisha girl now?” Martins was growing impatient after loitering around the mall for more than an hour. As he moved in his chair to view the entrance to the mall, Martins thought he saw the Doctor that rescued Stella from the pangs of death walk into the mall. “Doctor Titus?” So he has time to visit the Mall too with all the patients that besiege his hospital?” Martins wondered if the Doctor ever had time to catch some sleep. “Look at him with his funny spectacles…Snitch!” he said scornfully. He was still angry the Doctor had called tpolice on them. His wandering mind sauntered to his encounter with Doctor Titus at the hospital. *** “Doctor! There’s an emergency! It’s Senator Ibitoye,” a nurse bellowed Deji stopped the Doctor on his track as he attempted to race to the theatre “Doctor you were going to tell me something” “Yeah…Mr Deji, the Police will be here any moment” “You called the Police?” Deji, Martins and Akon asked alarmingly almost simultaneously “It’s in line with our policy, sirs” “What freaking policy?” Akon exploded in anger “Sorry I have to attend to an emergency” The doctor walks away from the devastated trio just as two police men walked into the waiting room. “Officers, that’s the young man,” the Doctor motioned the officers to where Deji stood affixed to the spot “You are under arrest!” *** The sudden appearance of a sales girl in the mall brought Martins back to real time. The teenage girl who was wearing a colourful apron attached to a short gown walked up to him to take his orders though Martins didn’t think he needed one yet “Good day sir” the sales girl greeted Martins smiling wholeheartedly like she was doing an advert for Close-up “Good day” “What would you like to have sir?” “Not yet please, I’m expecting someone.” The smile that had gained a foothold on the girls’ face suddenly waned “Sorry sir, you can’t sit here with the tables empty. As you can see, you took the last table and now we have a couple of people waiting at the flanks.” Martins took a quick glance around the relaxation spot and noticed that a couple was actually waiting. “So you are asking me to leave?” Martins appears embarrassed “Not exactly sir, I’m only advising you to have a taste of our confectioneries while you enjoy the view here” “Okay, just get me ice cream and please stop trying to be polite, you are drawing attention to me already” Martins said sternly “Sorry sir, please don’t take offense. I’m just acting on orders” the girl pleaded “I’ve heard you now! Just go please” Martins jettisoned her. However Martins outburst did not deter the young girl; “What flavor would you want?” “How much is a cup?” Martins asked. “600 naira” “Jesus! Do you sell it in a golden cup?” The girl bursts into laughter. “You are funny sir” She said in between giggles. “But I’m not joking here…its expensive” Martins voiced sternly “That’s the price sir” “Okay, fine. Just get me vanilla flavour “ “Any snacks to go with it?” “Are you kidding me?” Martins is infuriated while the young girl smiles at him patronizingly “ Trust me, that look won’t work. Please just get me the ice cream and remind me next time to loiter around for as long as I can while I wait for my guest” The girl takes her leave. Martins phone beeped. It was a ping from Aisha. She wanted to know where he was at the mall. He instantly responded to her ping, he was still pissed that he would be parting with some of his hard earned cash for a cup of ice cream. “If only he had been patient for at least 2 more minutes he wouldn’t have had to suffer such fate,” he thought. His brain began calculating how much more of his money he had to part with. Martins thought the transactions that were carried out in the mall was daylight robbery and that was only because it was the first time he would be spending his money at a mall.Martins was not a fan of ice cream because it only excited his taste bud but did nothing to satisfy the cravings of his stomach. He imagined the sumptuous meal of pounded yam and Afam soup with assorted meat he would have had with N600. A tap on his back brought him to life. It was Aisha. “Hi dear, sorry I kept you waiting” Aisha said softly as she pulled out the only unoccupied seat. “The havoc was done already, so what’s the point” Martins said under his breath Aisha appeared uneasy as she placed her hand bag and her phone on the table before them partly sitting, partly standing. “A minute please…I want to use the convenience” Aisha said with a bit of discomfort “Okay” Martins eyes trailed Aisha as she walked away from the table. He looked around him and noticed that he wasn’t the only guy staring, even guys that had female companions didn’t mind to steal a glance at the attractive Aisha. With her body clinging gown that revealed a slim frame amid an hour glass ‘lookalike’ figure; Aisha was indeed a stunner that evening and Martins almost didn’t mind spending all he had just to enjoy his time out with her. For a moment he wondered why Aisha was still single worse still he was only two years older than her and it didn’t look like she had a serious relationship going for her though they hadn’t really discussed that part of their lives. Then it dawned on him that he wasn’t any better. Martins was not in any relationship either whether serious or not. Aisha’s phone vibrated on the table halting Martins train of thoughts. He glanced at the screen to view the identity of the caller…“Tunde?”he muttered. The name didn’t ring a bell albeit Martins’ attention was drawn to the number as the vibration ceased. Then the phone came alive again. The vibration was so intense this time that it almost shook the table it seated off the ground. This time Martins’ thought the number was familiar. Out of curiosity, he dialed the number on his phone. “Good lord! I knew it!” Martins exclaimed The contact ‘ID’ of the Tunde whose call Aisha missed was actually Engr. adetukasi on Martins’ phone; Martin’s client. Martins is befuddled “So Aisha knows the Engineer… What exactly is this about? Who really is this Aisha?” Martins didn’t know what to believe any longer.

EPISODE TEN Martins was finding it difficult coming to terms with the fact that Aisha once again had a link with one of his biggest client. He still did not understand why Aisha was doing so much for him behind the scenes and yet acted like nothing happened. What was more confusing was that the same girl swore to pay him back in his own coin after their fall-out some years ago at the Polytechnic in Ibadan where Aisha, Deji and Martins’ paths crossed. So what was this sudden change of heart all about? Was Aisha becoming desperate in a bid to land herself a potential husband knowing well that the odds were against her? “I guess a girl who is few years away from 30 usually becomes formatted to be nice and dandy? Or is it that every move Aisha is making towards my success is a ploy to a well laid out master plan?” unanswered questions rummaged Martins’ thoughts forming a puzzle in his head To put it rather mildly, Martins was in a fix. He couldn’t say for sure if Aisha had suddenly fallen in love with him or she just was short of male attention hence her pull towards Martins. Martins knew the latter theory was almost impossible owing to the fact that Aisha is a very attractive lady but then at 28 age was not on her side anymore, or would that be wrong to conclude? Another issue that gnawed at his senses was Aisha’s familiarity with seemingly big shots. The Aisha he knew was morally upright and he would quickly debunk any insinuations in any quarters that Aisha is a ‘runs girl’. Aisha had been nothing but nice to him since the day she helped seal the deal involving her boss. Engr. Adetukasi had become her newest addition to Martins’ list of clients even though this time she preferred to completely put him in the dark. However that wasn’t the only thing on Martins mind on that busy Monday morning at work. Martins had become really worried and paranoid about his deal with Engr. Adetukasi after the man had declined his calls throughout the weekend. Martins was the only person in the office that morning; Johnson was on leave while Lanre left earlier to honour an appointment with a prospect on the Island. Martins’ worries suffered a relapse following the entry of the two chatter-box in the company; Tinu and Lola. “ That Ada girl way no pure, she’s just too desperate for my liking” Tinu voiced her dismay as she walked into the office side by side with Lola. “I envy the babe sha oh! That should be about the biggest deal so far in the company by a marketer” Lola said with a tone of finality “Do you have brain at all? Who told you Ada is one of us or have you forgotten she’s the head of marketing?” Tinu was again in her usual saucy mood but this time Lola had come prepared “Gosh! See Pot calling kettle black. Did you go to school at all? I’m suspecting you got your certificates from Oluwole or probably one of those evening schools around. So because she’s head of marketing means she’s not also a marketer?” “Ehn ehn…Don’t insult me oh!” Tinu warned Lola pointing a finger at her “Then use your head and stop talking like an illiterate” “Ehnn ehnn…Lola, let it just end there!” At this point Lola knew that anymore contention with her colleague might lead to a full fledged confrontation. What was more important was that Tinu’s ego was bruised already. Tinu finally settled into her desk after she had paced aimlessly through the office for a few seconds while Lola made for her cabinet to get some files “But wait oh…Tinu, is that deal certain yet?” Lola asked as she perused through some files “Why are you talking like this now? Didn’t you hear when the the MD told her the Engineer called him to ask if he could get some discount on the property. He even said he was likely going to make outright payment tomorrow” “Yekpaa! Haaa! That babe don hammer, I swear! Baba God why I no dey jam that kain client now” Lola bleated like a goat who had been denied yam peelings “No be say the babe even fine like that sef” Tinu’s admission had jealousy plastered around it “Abi oh! You wey fine self, person no know wetin you they use the beauty do. You just they waste am on top that your mumu boy friend wey no get swag” “Lola you don start oh! If I enter you now you go begin dey para…” Tinu was beginning to lose it again. “But na true now. That babe no fine reach you yet she dey get correct male clients even when be say na common marketer before she get this her present position .”Lola buttressed her earlier stance “Abeg! Marketing no be by fine girl, na who get mouth pass and you know say Ada mouth no be here; its spiritual. The babe can convince a dead man to buy a plot of land in Rosebury estate Ibeju Lekki for himself and his other dead buddies at the cemetery” Tinu concluded “Omo 4 acres no be child’s play oh! I for like get that kain jazz” Lola confessed “Wetin dey there, no be to get the right connection?” “Wait, did you say 4 acres?” Martins who had appeared oblivious of their conversation asked Tinu interrupting the conversation between the duo. Both Tinu and Lola threw weird glances at Martins “Who they follow this one talk now?” Tinu challenged Martins yet throws the question at Lola Martins becomes agitated as his thoughts began to run wild. The mention of ‘Ada and her connection with the 4 acres of land’ even though he didn’t hear the part the ladies talked about the Engineer formed a jigsaw puzzle in his head “Please do you know the name of this client?” Martins seem to address the duo “Martins wetin happen now? Your Client lost?” Lola said sarcastically “Moreover the man na Ada client. You fit go ask am yourself, abi no be your padi again?” Tinu added Martins immediately got up from his desk as he began pacing around the office in pensive mood like a rat that had been trapped to a corner. “This mustn’t be true, it shouldn’t just happen.” Martins said frantically as he stormed out of the office leaving Tinu and Lola to their own devices In less than thirty seconds, Martins was in front of Ada’s office. He only had to slightly bang on her door once before he helped himself in. Alas! Ada was not on seat. “Arrrgh!” Martins howled in anger as he made his exit. He took a quick glance at his wrist watch; the time suggested that Ada could possibly be having lunch at the company’s cafeteria within the premises. Martins immediately took the flight of stairs that descended to the basement of the office complex as he headed for the reception. From the reception, he took him a minute to get to the parking lot – a place he had to pass through before getting to the cafeteria. He was really eager to get to the root of the matter. Martins knew from the conversation that ensued between the two chatter box in his office that something devastating awaited him and Ada could possibly be the reason for the Engineers recent coldness towards him but he had to hear from the horse’s mouth first. Martins had only just begun his passage through the parking lot when he spotted them. Ada had already opened the door that led to the passenger’s seat of the Engineers’ 2008 Nissan Murano jeep when Martins loudly called out to her. “Ada! Ada!” Martins walked briskly through the parking lot in a bid to draw their attention. Ada is taken aback momentarily on sighting Martins “Martins let’s talk when I get back.” Sighting trouble, Ada quickly responded to Martins’ seemingly agonizing calls “No! let’s talk now! Please tell the Engineer to wait” Martins pleaded with a stern stance Ada’s ignores him as she bangs the door. Martins starts to race towards the Engineers’ car sensing that he was going to drive out of the parking lot regardless… “Ada! I need to see him too. Please don’t do this!” The car zooms off leaving Martins to his fate. “Oh God! What have I done to deserve this?” Martins lamented as he sank to the ground of the parking lot bemoaning his fate. Unfortunately there was no one around to console him except the grounds that provided solace for his crumbled limbs.

EPISODE ELEVEN Martins had imagined that deal was going to be is breakthrough; his ticket to splendour crescent. He couldn’t even figure out which higher authority at his workplace he would register his grievance with. Which mere mortal in his office would he narrate his ordeal to yet be willing to take up the matter? Who would believe he could have been that dumb to trust Ada? A part of him still hoped that Ada’s conscience would haunt her so much like a hungry dog haunted a bone, maybe he could still get a paltry sum out of the commission that will arise from the deal which should originally have been his. Regardless, Martins still needed to get to the root of the matter. All hope was not lost yet or so he thought. Martins needed to understand what part Aisha played in his misadventure. There was still a missing link he needed to establish. He headed for Aisha’s workplace immediately after his debacle at his company’s parking lot not minding if he would be able to get back to work before the expiration of his break. Nothing else mattered to him after it dawned on him that he could have ultimately lost the best opportunity of his life at becoming a millionaire. Martins appeared at the reception of AK Holdings Ltd in a state of brouhaha . His shirt was soaked in sweat as he perspired heavily like a hunter who just completed a hunting expedition at the Amazon basin. A bystander wouldn’t be wrong to think he was awaiting the hangman’s noose, in fact it looked like his sweat glands had ran amok. His heart rammed at his chest in protest like it needed space to cool off while his chest thumped helplessly in response like it was going to give in to the sporadic beat of his rebellious heart. His depressing appearance drew the attention of all and sundry present in the reception. Taking a closer look at him you would think the sun had set on his face. “Martins! Are you alright? Did a hurricane happen at work?” ” Hurricane? It was worse; my heart tells me it was a Tsunami?” “Oh don’t try to be funny; your appearance contradicts the sarcasm you are trying to impose on yourself.” “Funny? Far from it. I’m just trying hard to lighten my mood. Aisha trust me, this is more serious than it appears.” “Hmm…Tell me about it.” “Can I have a moment with you in private, please? Can’t talk to you here” Martins eyes roved round the reception. “Sure, not with so many people around. Let’s go to me office” Aisha led the way as they headed for her office away from the probing eyes of clients and colleagues alike. Having walked into her office, Aisha made for her desk. “Your boss is not around?” Martins asked. “Yeah, he travelled. He’s on a 2-week leave” “I see…” Aisha reclines into her seat “Please help yourself.” Martins takes a seat opposite Aisha “Got so much to do today but had to find time out of my busy schedule after we spoke on phone. The tone of your voice was frightening. Though we spoke for less than 15 seconds, I could feel it still. So what’s the problem? Were you sacked?” “I wish I was, at least that would have been better than losing out of this deal” Martins said giggling “What deal?” “Aisha, your friend, Ada played a fast one on me” “Hey! Ada is not my friend. Next time I‘ll have to remind you, it won’t be pleasant” Aisha expressed her displeasure at Martins’ ill-fated statement. “Sorry, I won’t mention it again” “So what happened between you and the Viper?” “You seem to know so much about her?” “Martins I’m losing my patience. Are you here to talk or you are here to interrogate me?” “Fine! Ada double crossed me, she stole my client from me and the deal was worth millions in terms of commission” “Oh my God! The snake! How did you let that happen?” “I don’t know how it happened; she must have been communicating with my client behind my back” “Did you give her his contacts?” “That’s the problem, I didn’t. I’m suspecting she got his contact from the phone she lent me that period I was phone-less.” “Are you kidding me?” “I think that was what happened. I never even imagined she could be that dubious.” “But Martins, how could you have trusted her so much? How on earth did you let Ada outsmart you? I hope you don’t have any intentions of sweeping this matter under the carpet?” “Of course not” Good. You can’t let this lie low. You must report this case to your superiors.” “First port of call tomorrow but I doubt anything good would come out of it. Who will believe me? It’s her word against mine. Moreover she’s my boss; she’s got more stakes in that company. Worse still I’m new to the company, my employment isn’t even confirmed yet” “Martins, when will you stop being a child, s o you will let it pass because you are a new employee?” “I haven’t said that” There was an unusual silence between the duo. The silence deepened so much that they could hear the reverberations from the arguments between two customers of the company emanating from the reception. “Aisha, when were you going to tell me about Engr. Adetukasi?” Martins broke the silence “I beg your pardon!” Martins’ sudden question took Aisha unawares. “I meant Tunde.” “Tunde?” Aisha echoed his thoughts “Yes, Tunde.” “Mmm…Martins I don’t get you. What are you driving at?” Aisha feigned ignorance “You missed 2 calls from him the other day at leisure mall. Tunde…2 missed calls…remember?” Martins gave a rejoinder in a bid to take her down memory lane “Oh that! Yes, Tunde. But what has that got to do with…em…Engineer…the name you mentioned earlier?” “Engineer Adetukasi.” Martins added. “Whatever” “You mean you don’t know him by that name?” Martins inquired “I mean I don’t know who you are talking about or what you are referring to” Aisha appeared to be growing impatient “Aisha, I dialed the number that called your line after you missed his call the second time. You remember you left your phone at the table we sat when you left for the rest room in a hurry…that was when the calls came in. The first time he called I thought the number was familiar, by the time he called again I knew it was. I only needed to dial the same number on my phone, it was then I realized that the Tunde whose call you missed was actually my client, Engr. Adetukasi” Martins concluded “Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Brilliant!” Aisha chorused and clapped her hands in pretentious awe for Martins’ seeming brilliance. She clapped her hands so hard that Martins could hear the echoes from a distant wall in the office. “Martins, I duff my hat for you. So you were that intelligent to figure that out yet you let Ada turn you to her maga.” “ Well…my bad. So you admit to know him?” “I haven’t said anything yet or have I?” Martins pretended not to understand “ But why didn’t you tell me about him? Why did you decide to link me with a client of such substance yet kept me in the dark about it? Why have you been of so much assistance to me when all you should be is vengeful? Aisha, why have you been so nice? My actions cost you an extra year in school, I’m sure that’s still fresh in your memory.” “I don’t know Martins. Probably I’m just been nice to someone who was once a good friend. It’s been how many years now…five? Six?” “Five I guess” “Five years! You can imagine how much time has elapsed. Martins, of what use will it be to still bear grudges? Moreover my life is better off now and I’m sure you’ve reaped the fruit of your labour in full measure already or don’t you think? At least the deal you lost to Ada lays credence to that among others. ” Martins is lost in thoughts “You are still thinking about it? Martins you were virtually our best student back then, but look at you…Who would have imagined you will be where you are at the moment; a bloody marketer hustling for commission? Wait self, how much is your salary? Huh? If not for the clients you manage to get through me, would they have even recognized you in your workplace? Would Ada have even seen you as a threat, a bait… someone to use to get to the top of the satanic ladder of her devious game?” Martins is taken aback by Aisha’s contempt-laden remarks “Hmm…someone is finally talking. You want to tell me more?” “You want to hear more?” Aisha added “Yeah…at least now I know you are human after all. There must really be a reason why you’ve been of immense assistance to me since what seems like our reunion.” “So?” “We will get to that later. However, depending on the relationship you have with this Engineer Adetu…Tunde, whatever you know him as, Aisha, don’t you think we can still salvage the situation?” “We? Martins, I see no we in this equation. You are the marketer here not me. We don’t even belong to the same company. Or does Realty Point and Ak holdings have similar inflections?” “Okay, you don’t have to stress it. I got your point the first time.” Martins said with resignation. “Aisha, who is Engineer Tunde or Adetukasi to you?” Martins popped the question this time. However, Aisha stays mute like a nun that had just taken a vow of silence. “Please Aisha, I have to know what’s going on here. You refused to let me in on your relationship with Ada, are you going to deny me this too?” Martins pleaded Aisha is unmoved by Martins’ pleas. “Okay let me help you. Is he your colleague, friend or… is he your lover?” “How dare you?” Aisha rises from her seat fuming like a politician who just lost an election. It was as if the question had blown a fuse in her. “Wow! Such rage? He is your lover then…” Martins is undeterred “Get out of my office!” Aisha responded in utter rage “Aisha, are you walking me out?” Martins is shocked at Aisha’s reactions “I said get out!!!” Aisha ex ploded this time. Martins slowly rises from his seat, he looks befuddled as he takes a long gaze at Aisha. Aisha looks away from him while she points to the door urging him to leave. With heads bowed in shame, Martins takes uncalculated strides toward the door. “…And never come back!” Aisha added with finality The silence between them was so frightening that they could hear the thumping of their heartbeats.

EPISODE TWELVE Martins was now at crossroads, his mind was in a state of hullabaloo. After his fall out with Aisha he couldn’t go back to the office. Fortunately for him he had someone to confide in when he got to his temporary accommodation after his sour meeting with Aisha. Deji had just being left off the hook following Stella’s recovery and her confessional statement. Like a bird who escaped from his captors, Deji was free again from the shackles of the men in black, or is it blue now? Martins breathe an air of relief when Deji told him a day prior to his release that neither he nor Akon would be charged to court for attempted murder or assault. Stella had conceded defeat to her Calabar rival and had resigned to her fate though she still mourned her loss. It had already been established that Akon was hell-bent on burning down anything that stood between her and Deji, so Stella stood no chance with Deji not even in the afterlife. Martins had got home that evening expecting an empty house as usual but his expectations were cut short when he opened the door leading to Deji’s cozy sitting room to meet a rejuvenated Deji and an elated Akon in the living room. The lovebirds were seated opposite each other on one of the 2-seater sofa in the living room making small talks. It was like their relationship just began anew. “Wow! Deji is that really you? You are back from the land of the forgotten?” Martins exclaimed “You can say that again” An excited Akon stated. “Welcome home brother, how was work today?” Deji added, making his presence felt. “Martins, you are back early. I guess there was no traffic today” Akon interjected before Martins could reply Deji “Indeed! The day traffic ceases in Lagos then you know Boko Haram have begun operations here” Deji said jokingly “Then that day will never come” Akon added “Baby, why does that sound like a curse?” Deji’s question elicit mild giggles from the duo “Which day are we talking about now, the day traffic would cease in Lagos or when Boko Haram will begin operations here?” Martins finally finds his tongue “Both will happen on the same day, so we have to pray against both happening” Deji’s response kindles laughter from the trio. Deji rises from his seat as he walked towards his friend. They shook hands then Martins gave him a warm embrace. “Good to have you back bro…” Martins said “Same here man and thanks for the support” “Don’t mention. What are friends for? We got each others’ back right?” “Of course” Deji stops to take a closer look at Martins. “What’s up with you? You look worried. Is it work?” Martins nods his head “You want to talk about it?” “I guess I can use some advice?”Deji turns to Akon ”Can you give us a moment boo?” “Don’t tell me your friend wants to come between us again?” Akon asked frowning “Hey, come off it goddess, you will have him all to yourself after now” Martins responded jokingly. Akon grumbles as she rises from her seat. “Run along and stop been a toddler already” Deji said poking her waist. She giggles as she pretends to be throwing tantrums. “Yes Daddy!” “Don’t worry, Baby will have the rest of the evening with Daddy” Akon wears a smile of victory on her face as she walked into the room she shared with Deji, by this time Martins had settled into the sofa. Deji joins him moments later “So what seems to be the problem?” Deji asked “I lost my client to Ada?” “I don’t get. You lost your client or you lost the million naira deal?” Deji asked befuddled. “We are saying the same thing Deji” “You lost the million naira deal to your boss?” Deji is shocked at Martins’ revelation “Yes” “With all that money?” “Na so we see am oh! Ada played a fast one on me and knowing men for their weakness, my client switched camps” “You mean Ada seduced him to get her in on the deal or she seduced you?” Deji is not convinced. “Deji, why are you talking like this now? It’s not about me, it’s my client that broke the clients code” “Shebi you see wetin I dey fight you for all these years. Martins you no just sharp, everything no be book oh. How you go allow babe they run you down naa?” “Deji I didn’t let you in on the matter to further compound my woes. I need your advice.” “Oh, you need my advice now ba? When I told you, you were making a terrible mistake trusting your boss, did my opinion count then? Now you need my advice when the deed is already done. Who buys a fire extinguisher after his property has been razed by fire?” “I guess that’s me…Martins” “You right. So what do you want to do to remedy the situation? Hope you’ve reported the matter?” “Not yet” “Why now?” “Deji you see, the problem I’m facing right now is not even Ada’s deceit; my main dilemma is that, Aisha-the person that secretly gave the client my contact has refused to help me out of the situation.” “Wait a minute! Aisha knows this client too?” “Yes naa, she referred him to me.” “I don’t understand. And you didn’t know he came from Aisha?” “Not until recently” “If I remember well enough, this is the third time Aisha is helping you out on a deal, right?” Deji asked puzzled. “Yes oh” “Yet, some years back the same Aisha promised to pay you back in your own coin for a sin you committed against humanity that made sure she had an extra in school” “Against humanity? Deji are you kidding me? why are you being melodramatic?” “Oh, so you don’t know that what you did back then in school didn’t only affect Aisha. Martins, about 10 students had extra years because of your over-zealousness” “Oh my God!” “See this one, so na only Aisha own you see. You know how many people been they beef you that year that’s if they aren’t the reason for the calamity that has befallen your life since we left Ibadan-Poly.” “Please Deji stop been superstitious” “Anyways, has the paperwork been finalized? Has he made payments?” “No, not yet but he would do that before the week runs out. It can even be tomorrow self” Martins said dejectedly “Then talk to Aisha about it naa, before it becomes too late, since you said he knows the client” “Aisha doesn’ want to have anything to do with me again. We had a disagreement some hours ago at her office.” “Really?” “Yes. She thinks I’m probing” “ Were you?” “I guess…” “Why? “ “Look Deji, I didn’t tell you that Aisha and Ada have a history none of them wants to talk about and I also think Aisha may be having an affair with the client I lost “ “Aisha having an affair with the big shot?” “Yes, just like I suspected she was having an affair with her boss when he agreed to buy those plots of land from us after he had expressly thrown me out of his office” “Unbelievable! So you went to her to have his client switch his allegiance back to you?” “Yeah, but instead she got really mad and walked me out of her office. She told me never to come back” “Something is not right about this your story. Is it possible that ‘my once upon a time holier than thou girlfriend’ is now a runs girl? Hmm…I love cracking things like this. Give me your clients name and number.” Deji said with a wide grin on his face “Wait a minute, is this now about Aisha or me?” M a rtins is confused “Haba Martins, how am I suppose to get to the root of the matter if Aisha is not the focal point?” “Mmm… So, Deji What are you now? A detective?” You will know in the coming days…

EPISODE THIRTEEN Martins had taken some vital steps in ensuring Ada’s betrayal didn’t go unpunished. First he let Deji in on the misadventure and the role Aisha seems to be playing in the unfolding drama. Martins was accustomed with reporting such matters to Deji because it was the trend back then during their undergraduate years when Deji was somewhat acclaimed an expert in crisis management and resolution among their circle of friends in Ibadan-Poly. He always had a way of breaking the ice in every matter concerning his friends. Also, Martins brought the matter to the notice of the Human Capital Executive of his company and he had also reported to the head of the customer service unit. It was midday on a work-saturated Wednesday. Martins was finding it pretty difficult finding his bearing at work. Martins was alone in the office though he wasn’t bothered about that. He needed the quietude so he could strategize. However, he didn’t enjoy his solitude for too long before Lola entered the office in her usual disoriented mode only this time she wasn’t with her partner in crime- Tinu. “Martins, what is this I am hearing? Ada stole you client?” Martins is surprised word had gone out already when he only just officially reported the matter in the morning. “Martins are you not the person I’m talking to abi why are you acting like a deaf and dumb sombori?” “Look Lola, I’m short of words and I ‘m sure you have all the answers you need already. I talked so much about the issue this morning that I’m nursing a headache at the moment” “You are lucky it’s just headache you have, If I hear say this kain thing happen to be ehnn! Na hypertension go kill my enemy. Wetin I go say dey worry me self for Ada to collect client for my hand? Na only person like you that kain thing fit happen to.” “Well, I’ve learnt my lessons. Once beaten, twice shy” “Wetin be that one? Don’t tell me you are already conceding defeat?” “Of course I’m not” “You had better not oh! Because that babe own don dey too much for this company” . Lola had not finished her statement when Ada walked into their office” “Lola how far?” Ada asked. Lola immediately turned away from Martins in a bid to hide the fact that she had been gossiping about her boss “Ah boss! Good afternoon” Lola responded pretentiously “Haba Lola, we only just spoke some minutes ago now” Ada said in way that suggested foul play Lola slammed her palm against her fore-head in embarrassment “I must be suffering from amnesia” “I guess you are” Ada added “Well, you are the boss. I can decide to greet you anytime we see” Lola tries to regain composure “I hear. Hope you haven’t forgotten our gist sha? This one that you don’t remember we spoke earlier” Ada said absen tmindedly “Of course not, it hasn’t gotten that bad” “Fine, I just thought I should remind you. I want to get to the bank.” “Alright “ Ada turns to leave but had not reached the door when she suddenly stopped on her track to address Martins. “So Martins you went ahead to report the matter to the HR. You seem not to realize I have so much influence in this company.” Martins looks into space ignoring Ada like she was a toddler trying hard to recite nursery school rhymes “You want to play ball with me right? Bring it on” Ada stormed out of the office banging the door behind her. “Lola what was that?” Martins asked disappointingly. “Pardon?” She feigns ignorance “I mean you acted like a snitch there.” “Oh, really? Well, in this life you have to strategize and re-strategize all the time to stay relevant.” “I don’t get you.” Martins appears lost. “ Look, are you with me on this or you are with Ada?” Martins asked. “Ogbeni, what are you talking about?” “Are you in Ada’s camp?” Martins reiterated “Is there a camp here? Look Dude, My Pastor, Pa Adegboye tells me there is only one camp and it is located at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway. So I don’t know the one you are talking about. Ada’s camp? Where is that?” “I see this is all a joke to you” “Martins, this life’s quest is the survival of the fittest. If you can’t beat them, then you join them. I’m sorry Martins, I can’t be a pigeon when I was born an eagle.” Lola reclined into her seat having made her point clear. “If you can’t beat them, you join them.” Martins echoes Lola’s words. “I‘ll be damned! I should have known better. This war was lost even before it began.”

EPISODE FOURTEEN Martins was preparing to leave Office under the guise that he was going to meet up with a prospective client. However he only had one thing on his mind as he made his exit from the work premises moments after Ada had left with the Engineer. A little bird had told Martins that they were headed for the bank and Martins thought this was his only chance to nip the matter in the bud. He had tried hard to get across to the Engineer but all his efforts had proved abortive. So he thought he could meet them up in the bank nearby where they had gone to do some transactions in respect to the land. He really needed to hear from the horses’ mouth, what led to his fall-out with the Engineer on the deal and the role Ada played in it. At least the Man owed him an explanation. He felt his pocket for the umpteenth time to be sure his recorder was with him as he hurriedly proceeded to the bank. Martins was going to ensure he had every bit of the conversation he would likely be having with the Engineer and Ada too on tape even if it will only end up as a confrontation. Martins was judiciously adhering to Deji’s advice and was determined to let the cat out of the bag in the best way possible. The bank was just a stone throw away. Ada and the Engineer were within the bank premises five minutes before Martins arrived. The sun was burning red hot. Its intensity was so much that Martins’ throat began drying up like he had being forcefully fed some chilled red hot pepper which was heating up the walls of his Oesophagus. The celestial realm flaming ball was obviously registering her prowess as the most domineering celestial object. A day earlier, the rain had challenged her supremacy following a massive downpour on the earth after seven days of being bullied off the skies by the sun each time it tried to make its presence felt. It had rained so hard that at some point some people had gone searching for the ‘Ark of Noah’ just in case it was lurking around the corner after making a return to the earth. The Ark’s presence would at least lay credence to the rain’s sudden show-off. It was the month of July the supposed coldest month yet the temperature in Lagos was fluctuating between 32-34 degrees celsuis. Now, that wouldn’t have posed much of a challenge if the traffic didn’t add to the despair facing motorists, commuters and pedestrians alike. Martins tried to find a shade to serve as shield from the earth’s flaming ball but it seems even the shade he found had lost its cover to the scorching heat. Even the fowls of the earth sought refuge away from the sun’s vicious rays. He wondered how much longer he would endure the agony bestowed on him by the insensitive bully in the skies as he watched the Engineer come out of his car after what seemed like ages. That was Martins cue to get going and Ada’s remained stay in the car made it a perfect plan. The only thing Martins needed to do now was to get into the bank unnoticed by Ada. Martins had only just started walking into the bank premises when he noticed someone that seemed like a 6-foot-5, 170-pound, 19-year-old teenager. The burly teenager who was wearing a tad gear military jacket, a fisherman’s cap which almost concealed his entire face and dark sunglasses walked daringly as he caught up with Martins moments before he entered the banking hall. Martins smelled a rat and for a moment forgot about what brought him to the bank. He instantly realised going into the banking hall was going to be a bad idea. Martins attempted to make a complete U-turn but was stopped on his tracks by the devious teenager who is called ’47’ by his squad members; a name he derived for his swift and easy usage of the AK 47 gun. “Ogbeni, where you think say you dey go?” 47 asked Martins in a husky tone. “Eh…sorry sir, but I been leave my ATM for house” Martins stuttered in near fright. “No worry, just enter bank, we no go need your ATM. I sure say money go plenty for strong room and if we no find money for there, you fit come carry us go your house make we use your ATM replenish our supplies” “I don’t get you sir” Martins is beffudled. “Guy, move inside bank jare” The Burly teenager gripped Martins neck and threw him to the ground in a flash. There was turmoil just behind them as other members of the teenager’s gang being driven by an unwitting chaffeur scurried out of a Toyota town ace van as they shot sporadically into the air. Everyone including the security men on duty outside the bank ran for their dear lives in the commotion that ensued. It was a rat race. The 7-man gang rounded up the two fragile security men outside the entrance leading to the bank lobby as 4 of the gang members forcefully gained access to the banking hall after dis enabling the rotor door, leaving three men including the burly teenager behind as they continued to shoot indiscriminately outside the bank. One of the men who broke into the bank dragged Martins in. As the men, all in their windproof masks advanced, everyone in the lobby screamed and ran helter skelter like a pride of lions were hot on their trails. The commotion that ensued reminded one of 9/11. “Everyone go down!” The leader of the Robbery squad, Solonzo barked his orders. “…and as you are going down switch off your phones” Salewa, the only female member of the squad added “Ori Iya mi o!” A bereaved customer voiced his fears as he went down flat kissing the floor beneath like they were both having a discreet love affair “Wetin I find come bank today o!” Another customer quietly bemoaned his fate Staffs and customers of the bank complied to orders from the gun-wielding miscreants with immediate alacrity. Everyone asides the misfits seem to have their hearts in their mouths “This can’t be happening to me” A young female teller in her early 20’s tried to come to terms with the bank invasion by the robbers The loose cannons perpetrating the bank heist held everyone in the bank hostage while the looting of cash and personal effects began with reckless abandon. Salewa- the only female member of the gang, walked up to the terrifying tellers. She ordered them to empty their treasury. They nervously handed her bags upon bags of money as she passed it on to two other members. It was a field day for the robbers. “Get up” Solonzo aggressively yanked up one of the female tellers. He then called out to one of his squad member “Pharrel” “Yes boss!” “Make you and Machiavelli follow this babe enter strong room” “Ahhh! Strong room! Skiibo! Eni yin ma bad gan ni. Let the storehouse be opened to mankind” Pharrel goes into a frenzy, speaking gibberish at the mention of strong room “Oya babe! Enter the place” He grabs the lady roughly by the waist, while pointing a real steel AK 47 rifle at her “Na money I send una oh! No go do another thing for there oh” Solonzo warned having noticed Pharrel’s eyes on the female teller “Haba boss! Why you dey talk like this?” Pharrel frowned at Solonzo’s comment “I know you naa. This one wey you don dey size the babe up so.” “That one na just normal due process” Pharrel maintained “Go with her into the strong room jare, we ain’t got time” Solonzo urged him. Pharrel and Machiavelli dragged the female teller as they matched her into the strong room. After about 20 minutes, Pharrel stormed into the banking hall from the strong room on cloud nine, while Machiavelli in the company of the subdued and hapless female teller followed suit “Bossman! See as money just dey waste for here oh! O yapa gan!” He bellowed” “Mumu, no be why dem call am strong room?” Solonzo berates him “Omo the room strong gan ni oh. We don hammer!” Machiavelli added “Hope say you carry enough sha?” Salewa asked “ Enough ke? We fit buy the whole of Togo and Niger with this money.” An overly excited Pharell joked. “Are you mad ni? Abi you don forget say I be Togolese” said an infuriated Salewa “Abeg babe no vex na the money wey I see they disrupt my brain signals” Martins managed to catch a glimpse of the unfolding drama from where he laid like a rebel that was captured by a troop of ‘ISIS’ soldiers. The ecstasy displayed by Pharrel reminded him of Rashidi Yekini’s near-post celebration after he scored Nigeria’s first goal in her first ever world cup in 1994 or you may want to liken it to Chioma Ajunwa’s first Nigerian Olympic gold medal celebration after she leaped 7.12metres to win the long jump event of Atlanta 96. Satisfied with their booty, the gunmen were almost going to storm out of the bank when a phone rang from one of the customers that were held captive by the dare-devil robbers. “Who was that?” Solonzo’s voice echoed in the bank lobby like a solitary voice in a dark cemetery for slain vampires. Now looking in the direction the phone rang, Solonzo’s voice bellowed again “I say, who be that?” “You deaf ni, abi you no fit answer” Salewa points her rifle at Engineer Adetukasi (the client Ada stole from Martins) as she corked it. “I’m sorry ma, it was a mistake” The Engineer stuttered, shaking vigorously like a fowl drenched in rain. Goose bumps covered the entire length of his skin. “I thought I told you guys to switch off your phones” Solonzo is infuriated “It was my other line, sir. I didn’t remember I had it with me” The Engineer replied in a disoriented mode sensing trouble “Salewa!” “Yes boss!” “Take him out” “Always at your service boss” Salewa immediately fires a point blank perfect shot at the engineer. Her rifle instantly dislodges a bullet into the Engineers’ temple, spilling the contents of his brain around, amid the Engineer’s incoherent cries. Brain matter splatters on walls and some of the people lying flat on the ground cried out in muffled sounds. It was a gory sight to behold! Moments later, an eerie silence rends the air. The Engineer instantly blanks out as his body became lifeless. There was no way he could have survived that for he was gone even before the shot was fired at him! The Brouhaha continues…

EPISODE FIFTEEN Martins was in a state of shock. He still couldn’t come to terms with what just transpired. “This has to be a bad dream. I should wake up from it soon,” he said to no one in particular. The Engineer had fallen prey to the dare devil gang after his phone rang out loud at an odd hour. It was like the devil himself had orchestrated his death. He lay lifeless on the hitherto sparkling white tiled floor of the first generation bank. The blood that oozed from his head had made the floor assume a red colour. The obscure but grisly sight from afar of reminded Martins of a scene from the wilds he once saw on National Geographical Channel. Just a month ago, Martins watched with dismay as a Lion buried his claws into the head of a young buffalo. From a distant, Engineer Adetukasi’s head was looking no different. Martins quickly dismissed the thought the moment he remembered that the person he was referring to had suffered a fatal fate “Gosh! I won’t wish this kind of end even for my worst enemy” Martins said aloud in regret. “He closed his eyes as he said a silent word of prayer.” Father forgive me for thinking carelessly of the dead” Martins still crouched down in fear at the corner he was confined to by the robbers. The robbers where still shooting sporadically outside the bank scaring away passers-by. Martins wondered what a war zone would be like if a mere bank robbery felt like the end of the world had come. Still in shock, Martins gradually crawled out of his hidey-hole as he peeped outside to see what the robbers were up to. The bravado and recklessness they displayed outside was second to none. The operation had been on for over an hour and yet no policeman was in sight. The robbers had moved to the ATM machines outside. It was obvious they were all out to wreck the bank. They then proceeded to torching the Toyota town ace van they drove to the bank, causing more commotion in the locality. Solonzo, who was holding 3 car keys belonging to the bank threw one of the keys to AK “Guy, free that fool wey they there. We need to leave now!” Solonzo said to AK, referring to the chauffeur they had tied to a PHCN pole while the robbery was in full swing. “Okay boss” “Pharrel and Machi, go with him” Solonzo threw a second key to another member of the gang. “That’s for the blue SUV. Go with Ziggi.” He hands the last key to Salewa who is standing close to him “Babe, let’s go in that. You are driving.” He said, referring to the only SUV left in the bank premises “Ak, how far is it from the Atlantic ocean?” “Roughly 15mins.” “We should make it right” “Yes boss” “Okay, let’s roll” Solonzo ordered the gang AK untied the chauffeur where he had held him bound and ordered him into one of the 3 sports utility vehicle in the bank premises. Salewa enters the last SUV as they sped of still shooting sporadically in the air. Martins watched as the robbers fled the crime scene with no security operatives hot on their heels. Now it was time to sort out the bloody mess the robbers left behind. Martins drew close to the lifeless body of Engineer Adetukasi. By this time, two customers, three security men and two bank officials had converged around the body. One of the security men was making a call. “Na wao! Na so dem just waste human being like fowl” one of the customers said. Martins approached the body as he stood rooted to the spot on getting a closer and clearer view of the messy and bloody remains of the Engineer. “Oh my God! This can’t be the Engineer! Death is no respecter of persons indeed” Martins said, turning away from the body “Somebody should call an ambulance now, he could still be breathing” A distressed young lady cried out “Who? Madam you no get eye ni? abi na sense you no get?” One of the bystanders asked “Please don’t insult me oh! It was just a suggestion” “All these rich people sef, wetin dem know?” Another bystander added. “Please let’s calm down. We are yet to recover from this” a security man pleaded “Attention please! I will advise everyone to remain within the banking hall. Officers from Area F, Police command will soon be here” the bank manager announced “To do what now” the first bystander asked. “Medicine after death. We don’t need them” the other bystander added “Abeg me I wan go house oh. I never still recover from this gbege” The customer who had earlier raised concerns rejoined. The dejected branch manager of the bank walked towards the small crowd that converged around the body. The suit he wore looked like it had seen several civil wars. “Attention!” The Bank manager had not completed his statement when sporadic gunshots rends the air outside amid sirens blaring loudly from a distance Everyone in the banking hall instantly scampered for safety. The gunshots continued unabated as Martins dived under a table in the customer service unit. Moments later, there was an eerie silence in the bank as the people awaited their fate. Martins trembled as loud footsteps marched towards him from his position – an area close to the ill-fated entrance. The unknown men drew closer as their footsteps drummed louder. They finally emerged at the banking hall. “Everyone go down!” The leader screamed “But we dey ground already now” a bystander said in low tones One of the customers hissed loudly on sighting the men in black “Oh, so na police self” Another bystander expressed disappointment Martins peeped from his position. He slammed his head underneath the table the moment he noticed the badge of one of officers. The Bank manager rose from his hiding place as he approached the officers “Where are the robbers?” An officer asked. “Which robbers? The ones that left almost 30 minutes ago or the new arrivals standing before us?” The bank manager fumed. Everyone present hurled insults at the policemen as they tried to set a perimeter around the crime scene.

EPISODE SIXTEEN It was a week after the Engineer’s death, yet the tension in the air had not doused. Ada was yet to recover from the shock of the attack at the bank she had gone to with the late Engineer. The aftermath of the incident hit her so hard that she had to go on a leave with the hope it would ease the emotional trauma the robbery attack and the untimely demise of her client was causing her. Martins would never have wished the Engineer dead, but a part of him felt it was justice served. However, some stories had been making the rounds about the true identity of the Engineer which had got Martins utterly confused. Martins couldn’t tell if the person that was killed by the robbers was actually Engineer Adetukasi, or the media had got the incident at the bank all wrong. It was a Saturday; Martins was watching TV in Deji’s living room, when Deji walked into the house. “Welcome!” Martins greeted him. “How far? What have you been up to?” Deji asked. “Nothing much jare” Deji handed Martins the newspaper he had bought on his way to the gym “Check out the headlines at the far left corner of the page” Martins gazed closely at the newspaper as he attempted to read out what Deji had brought to his notice. The screamer read; “ MAN KILLED IN BANK ROBBERY WAS PA TO AK HOLDINGS BOSS.” “That’s not possible naa! That dude was an Engineer. Why is the media getting this robbery ish… all wrong” Martins said. “Guy why you dey talk like this now? Was it not just yesterday Punch disclosed his identity, abi na lie dem talk too? Both of them can’t be wrong naa. At least it proves that Aisha was probably using him to get back at you.” “But why?” “You dey ask me?” “Ehn…but it still doesn’t explain the part where the same P.A was on the verge of buying a land worth millions of naira and the role Ada played in it. Was that still Aisha trying to get back at me for something that happened years ago?” Martins gave Deji something to ponder on. “Well, I can’t really place that one…but you were the same person that said Aisha and Ada have a history.” “Yes, I did say that, but…” “Errr, maybe it was all part of the plan” Deji interjected. “Deji, don’t you get? He would have still bought the land and enriched Ada all the same. Why would that be part of Aisha’s plan for an enemy?” Martins’ thoughts sprang to life again “How can? Where P.A for get that kind money now?” “Probably he was doing the deal for his boss” “The same boss wey just buy how many plots of land for una hand? Haba! Na so money dey scratch am? Look, the only person that can solve this riddle is Aisha. Call her and tell her you want to see her to clarify some things.” “She said she never wants to see me again, remember?” Martins said in opposition to Deji’s suggestion. “Abeg call am first joor…” Suddenly, Martins’ phone rings on one of the glass-crafted stools close to the divan couch he was seated, in the living room. His pupils dilated on seeing the caller ID on his screen. “Speak of the devil!” Martins exclaimed. “Aisha?” Deji asked in awe “Yes oh!” “Na lie!” “See as God dey work” Martins said. “Pick am now!” “Relax, make the thing ring small” “Bomb dey your head ni? Guy pick this thing joor” Martins slowly reached on to the glass-crafted stool for his phone as he answers his call. “Hello!” “Martins! ” Aisha’s voice echoed from the other end of the line “Please, I need to see you now!” She sounded panicky. “I beg your pardon?” Martins is befuddled. He pressed the receiver against his ear. “Aisha are you okay, or is it the network that is making your voice a bit shaky?” “Are you home?” The voice at the other end stuttered. “Yes…but, Aisha you’ve not answered my question. Have you been crying?” “Martins you are asking too many questions. Please can I see you? You can give me your address or something…I need to see you” She managed to complete the sentence. “I’m coming, let me call you back” Martins ended the call. “Why you end the call naa? How far? Wetin happen?” “Baba, cool down naa. Why your blood dey hurry? See as you dey ask me question like say my name dey Buhari ministerial list, you be senator ni?” “No be your fault naa, the babe don dey worry for your matter again, na him make your mouth dey miss yan abi?” Martins began to type something on his phone. “Make I give am your address?” “Wait! She wan come?” Deji asked alarmingly. “Yes oh! She wan come here” “ She doesn’t know we stay together?” Deji quizzed “Remember you told me not to tell her back then, so I never did” “Aisha is coming here?” Deji said to no one in particular, as he grinned from ear to ear. He instantly rises from his seat in an attempt to leave the sitting room. Martins is confused at Deji’s reaction. “Deji, where are you going to?” “I need to go refresh, wouldn’t want our August visitor to see me in my gym outfit” “But I haven’t told her anything yet” “What do mean you haven’t told her anything yet?” Deji turned to stare hard at Martins. “Dude relax! You are getting worked up already.” “Talk naw!” Deji grows impatient while Martins kept mum “Dude call her back abi, kini big deal? Moreover, were you not typing the address on your phone just now?” Martins nods his head. He still stares blankly at Deji. “Dude, what’s your problem naa? Call her now or send a text. Remember she has the answer to this your riddle. This is your golden chance to put the Engineer’s puzzle to rest. I‘ll be with you in a jiffy” “Oh my God! This dude is still in love with this babe, after all these years?” Martins said in unbelief. His lips parted momentarily as he tries hard to comprehend his new findings. “God! Am I missing something? How much more drama do you have in store for me?”

EPISODE SEVENTEEN Deji’s living room was as quiet as a graveyard. Again, Martins wished Deji was around to ease the tension between him and Aisha. He still found it pretty difficult believing all Aisha had told him about her Machiavellian plans for him and Ada; a plan that indirectly led to the death of Aisha’s colleague at work. The moment Aisha told Martins that the client was part of a grand set-up, Martins could no longer deal with Aisha’s presence in the living room. He still couldn’t understand what Aisha’s ill-timed plan was really about. The whole thing felt like child’s play. “Which serious-minded person would even think of that as a punishment?” Martins pondered. Once again, Martins had reasons to propose an evaluation of Aisha’s mental health like he did several years ago. It had become evident that Aisha never forgave Martins all along. His actions had caused her an extra year in school; she knew he had to pay back one way or the other. Ada on the other hand got tangled in Aisha’s Machiavellian blueprint after her actions had led to Aisha’s sack from Realty Point; the company she worked for a year ago. Ada had remained in the company and even got promoted the same year Aisha’s contract with the company was terminated, whilst Martins joined Ada at the company later. To Aisha, the die was cast. He only had to kill two birds with a stone, hence she set up a fake client with the duo. Aisha’s plan was suppose to lead to the eventual sack of Ada, albeit Tunde’s death saw to it that the plan stopped on its tracks. Finally, Martins had answers to the questions that haunted his thoughts. He now knew what it was between Aisha and Ada that made them sworn enemies. While she was at Realty Point Limited, Aisha had converted a client’s monthly installments for a land he was transacting, for personal use and couldn’t replace the money until the issue was brought to the notice of the company’s management board. Aisha and Ada had been made to face a disciplinary panel after Aisha had accused Ada of refusing to pay back the money she had borrowed her. However, Ada refuted the allegation before the disciplinary panel. Ada had gone on to tell the disciplinary panel that Aisha was fond of converting her client’s monies for personal use until it was going to become an issue, but that this time around she had gone too far with her sport. According to Ada, Aisha’s faux pas was embroiling her into her last transaction before she was later left in the cold by her employers. Aisha was seen to have taken advantage of her seemingly close ties with Ada and had attempted to make Ada convince her employers that she indeed had borrowed 200,00 naira from her; the money meant for the supposed client. In fairness, Ada had betrayed her long-standing friend when she denied ever collecting such huge sum of money before the panel. What happened in the hearing before the disciplinary panel set up by Realty point only a year ago shocked Aisha to her marrows; she had remained speechless before the panel as she watched her friend rant about her non-existent cunning ways and consequently putting an end to her marketing job at Realty point. Worse still, Ada never paid back. Aisha had lost both ways; it was one of the worst moments of her life. She had never felt betrayed the way Ada did betray her since she learned to pronounce the word, “mama”. No one ever believed her story. Therefore, the moment she found out that Martins had joined Realty Point he knew one way or the other both erstwhile friends of hers would hear from her soon. She just didn’t know how best to make them pay for their betrayal and the hurt they had caused her. Martins finally found his tongue after a long moment of silence and reflections. “Aisha, so the Engineer was really not an Engineer” Aisha nodded her head from where she sat just opposite Martins. “The media were spot on with their reports after all. His real name was actually Tunde Phillips, your boss’s Personal Assistant, and obviously you were sleeping with him. You guys were smitten.” Martins is aggrieved. Ada throws him a questioning look “Oh please don’t give me that look, your story tells it all. You know, it still baffles me that you could hurt that much and still be able to play such costly pranks. Don’t you think we deserved more?” “I wasn’t thinking straight. The thought of the whole thing was like a rush of blood to the head. The plan was for Ada to get sacked from converting a deal meant for you. Tunde was suppose to make that happen just before the deal was going to be sealed; not like it was ever going to be anyways. Then, you were my bait” “So, Engineer…sorry, your Tunde was never going to buy any land?” “No he wasn’t.” “You know, when you missed his call during our outing at leisure mall, I knew something was amiss after I confirmed he had the same number with the Engineer Adetukasi on my phone. Anyway, it’s so sad that he’s dead now. Like they say; what goes around comes around” Tears begin to well up in Aisha’s eyes again. “He didn’t deserve such tragic end” Aisha gets emotional. “I’m sorry I let that out” Martins apologized, realizing his mistake. “So, you killed two birds with a stone, huh?” Aisha fails to respond. “Aisha, the part I still don’t get is how you were so certain that your boyfriend was still going to end up with Ada?” “Martins, he was not my boyfriend!” “Sorry, another error. So, can you at least make me understand the part where your guy ended up as Ada’s client?” Aisha gives the question a thought for some seconds. “You know you had told me the day Tunde called you that you were gonna let me know when you get to the office. And I asked you how you were going to achieve that since you were without a phone then, right?” Aisha asked. “Yeah…And I told you Ada usually borrowed me her phone during office hours” Martins replied. “That was all the info I needed to perfect my plan. Tunde called you to introduce the deal, I knew you were gonna be in cloud nine and as usual go relay it to your boss, Ada.” “Why were you so certain I was gonna do that?” “…because you had always done same for your previous deals; you always let her in on your deals and knowing Ada for the snitch and greedy asshole she is, there was no way she was going to let that deal slip off her. I figured you would be stupid enough to leave Tunde’s number on her phone, and I knew Ada would be treacherous enough to retrieve the number from the phone she borrowed you and be quick to pull a call through to Tunde. It was a done deal!” “So you led us on? Oh my God! Aisha! You are a snake!” “I perfectly agree with you Martins. I’m a snake, a big one for that matter. But you and Ada are bigger snakes, in fact both of you are vipers!” Deji walked into the living room unnoticed. “Aisha!” Deji is excited on sighting Aisha “Deji!” Aisha is in a state of shock at Deji’s sudden appearance, she hadn’t set her eyes on him in 5 years “You live here?” “Yes I do” “Martins! Why didn’t you tell me? Goodness…” Aisha is infuriated. She’s lost for words. “Good to see you too”

EPISODE EIGHTEEN Deji had thought he was finally going to reconcile with his long lost girlfriend but instead things had got awry. It was indeed sad for him because he still loved Aisha. Aisha had left in a fury after a heated conversation with Deji. It was a dead end! Martins on the other hand left the house at Deji’s behest. His friend needed some private moments with his ex-girlfriend. In three hours, Deji wanted to bridge the gap in their relationship that saw them estranged from each other for almost six years. While Deji thought Aisha’s presence in his house was divine, Aisha didn’t have same notion. In fact she saw their meeting as yet another disaster waiting to happen. Aisha had left Deji’s house feeling worse than she felt when she came, which left Deji’s mind roaming aimlessly in no man’s land. Martins returned to the house two hours before midnight to find Deji in the living room drinking himself to stupor amid loud music. Martins knew instantly that Deji’s present state was as a result of whatever had gone down between him and Aisha while he was away. Albeit, whatever it was that transpired couldn’t have yielded positive result or how do you explain a situation where a young man suddenly decides to go on a drinking spree; which ensured that he emptied the entire alcohol in the refrigerator. Deji was singing 2face’s track – “If love is a crime” between gulps of red wine. Martins wondered what it was about Aisha that was hard for Deji to let go. “This dude has had every girl imaginable and unimaginable gracing his bed yet he whines over a psychotic babe from Auchi” Martins lamented under his breath “Martins come join me” Deji said drowsily. He looked a bit tipsy but was still very sane. “You know I don’t drink” Martins replied. “Yeah, how could I have forgotten? The good old Martins who never smoked, drank nor even womanized and it’s not like you were really a Christian self…You know Aisha really likes you though.” “What are you talking about?” Deji’s last statement took Martins unawares. He’s lost. “Oh please, stop pretending you don’t know she does.” “I think you’ve had too much to drink” “Look Martins, even a blind man could tell. Why do you think she’s still being on your case since you guys fell out in school?” “Well, her friendship has been hoax. She’s only been trying to make me pay for the extra year my actions cost her in school” “Abeg make I hear word! You too like to dey talk like small pikin. So you think her presence here this evening was still about that? Wake up kid!” Martins is perplexed. “Deji, what really happened between you and Aisha while I was away, because I don’t understand all these your talk oh?” “Aisha doesn’t want to get back with me, period!” Deji revealed. “Are you crazy? Deji, that babe left you years ago. What makes you think she would want you back now? Your wealth or what? Because the Aisha I knew was never a sucker for such. Moreover didn’t you say she broke up with you because you had been cheating on her? Aisha detests cheats. Dude, you were a womanizer in school and even when you didn’t womanize the girls kept coming. It was obvious she was just buying time back then” “Hmm, you seem to know her more than I did, right? “ “I never said that” “Well… Aisha only found out about my cheating ways a couple of times, but basically that wasn’t the reason she broke up with me” “I beg your pardon!” “As at the time Aisha broke up with me, I had stopped cheating on her. I had become a faithful guy and a hopeless romantic” “So you lied? It wasn’t about that?” “No it wasn’t. Aisha left me because she found out that I had become a G-guy” “Huh! G-wetin?” “Dude, I found out I had magic fingers in HND 1 so I explored by talents to the fullest especially when help was not forthcoming. You also knew Aisha had a humble background…I was her solace” Deji revealed in between breaths “Slow down, dude! I still don’t get you. What exactly are you talking about?” Martins voiced his concerns “Oh my God! You still don’t understand me?” Deji howled impatiently. He is exasperated. “No I don’t” “What part of what I said don’t you understand?” “Everything…G-guy, magic fingers…why the code names?” “Dude I was a yahoo boy in school” “What? You must be kidding me! And I didn’t know about that too? Deji, so this life you are living didn’t just start today? How was it possible for you to have hidden that part about you all these years?” Martins is in utter shock. “Martins, I lied about many things while we were in school especially the part about my background and acquisitions” “Gosh! why is everyone around me full of secrets?” A loud bang on the door raced Martins thoughts from Deji’s revelation to the intruder at the door “Who be that one?” Deji bellowed Martins took a glance at his wrist watch, he appears apprehensive. “Deji’s it’s past ten. Are you expecting someone?” “At this time of the night? Not at all” “Probably its Akon or Aisha?” “No, I’m not expecting Akon till tomorrow” “Then it’s Aisha” “Are you okay? Why would she want to come back here abi she tell you say she forget something?” The banging intensified as Deji began to lose his cool. Who be that mad man naa!!!
