New dustbins installed in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality are probably the world’s most high-tech trash receptacles. The 20 bins, added on Monday, are fitted out with technology that sends out messages alerting sanitation workers to empty them when they are nearly full. They also feature Internet routers providing Wi-Fi hotspots, and all their functions are solar-powered.

The bins are part of Chongqing’s “Intelligent City Administration” plan. Their batteries charge in the sun and they can work without sunlight or under cloud cover for three days.
The bins upload data on their capacity to the Intelligent City Administration platform every hour, and workers are prompted when they are 80% full.
The Wi-Fi hotspots can provide network access to 50 people simultaneously from 8 a.m. to midnight.
The bins have separate sections for recyclable and non-recyclable waste, old cellphones, batteries and battery chargers, and cigarette butts.
