THE BABY BOY OBAS OF YORUBA LAND
The Baby boy Obas are a part of the new generation of traditional rulers in the South-Western part of Nigeria. They are young, well-educated and well-travelled. I call the new set of Obas "Awon Irunmole to n wo Versace".
Oba Saheed Elegushi sits on the throne of his fathers in Ikate Elegushi, Lagos. He finished from the Lagos State University and has a couple of post-graduate degrees from home and abroad. He was also a P.A to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Raji Fashola. After making himself a fixture on the Lagos social scene, it became impossible to find Yoruba Movies where his name wasn't mentioned. Every Tom, Dick and Morufu in charge of organizing an award ceremony put Oba Elegushi as "Royal Father of the day". His name can also be heard on albums released by Various Fuji Artistes.
The Oluwo of Iwo - Oba Rasheed Adewale Akanbi ascended his throne in November 2015. Most of his education was done in Ibadan while the rest was done in Canada. After the passing of the previous Oluwo in 2013, the ancient town of Iwo existed without a King due to the in-fighting among the traditional houses. After 2 years, the "Oracle spoke" and the governor gave him his staff of office. Oba Akanbi is married to a lady of Jamaican descent and is said to be fluent in French and German alongside Yoruba and English.
The Ooni of Ife - Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi got his credentials from the Osun State Government last year. He ascended the throne which had been previously sat on by Oba Adesoji Aderemi and Oba Sijuwade. He also studied in Ibadan and is said to be a Chartered Accountant. Somewhere along the line, he moved into the Real Estate business and built quite a number of estates along the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos. His marriage to a new wife shortly after his enthronement drew quite some flak from many observers. Oba Ogunwusi has also been criticized for a lack of appreciation of the religious significance of his role. He has been seen singing and kneeling down in a manner that is typical of "Born-Again Christians". Beyond the controversies that have surrounded Oba Ogunwusi's religious activities, I have been impressed by his activities. His recent visits to the United States and Ghana created an opportunity for cultural diplomacy which had been non-existent. I watched keenly as he went from one city to another and saw the joy with which he was received. I can't put my finger on it but I want to bet that he is making his own path and blazing a trail in an unusual manner.
In conclusion, we have to thank “the Oracle” in charge of choosing Obas these days. The Oracle’s CV verification and selection processes are second to none. I suggest we should offer its services to the Federal Govt or what do you think?
