See Reason Why There No iPhone 9, Windows 9 and BB9
I know some of us must have wondered why there is nothing like iPhone 9, BB9 and Windows 9. Why do they always skip the number “9”. This even became more obvious as Apple launched the iPhone X following up the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Microsoft did the same thing when they skipped Windows 9 and released Windows 10 just after the Windows 8 OS. Blackberry followed the trend as they never released any BB9 series but we have a BB10 right.
The Number 9
Why exactly are they skipping the 9th digit. Are they afraid of it or what?
Well, I did my findings and courtesy of WizyTechs, the reason for the neglect has been revealed.
Tech Brands steer clear of the number 9 due to superstitious beliefs of some people in certain regions.
Just like football having its own rules, there are some rules you too have to adhere to if want to sell products across multiple cultures.
One major rule is to study and understand the culture of where you’re selling your product to. Study how they live, their superstitions, the type of product that will suit them.
We live in a modern world, but our culture and nature still remains innate in us.
Countries in Asia such as Korea, China and Japan consider the number 4 a bad omen. They believe it is synonymous for the word “death”. In regards to this, brands in those countries endeavor to avoid it. Consumer perception is a very delicate factor when it comes to marketing products.
Another example is number 13 which is seen as bad luck in the West even till date. Remember “Friday the 13th”? Huh. Regarding this , there might not be anything like a Windows 13 or an iPhone 13 in the nearest future.
WHAT DOES THE NUMBER 9 MEAN?
In China, the number 9 is synonymous to death. In Japan, it means suffering, agony or torture. Now that’s gross…
The fact that China is one of the hugest market when it comes to Tech stuffs confirms our findings. Nobody wants to mess with one of the biggest tech market in the world. So, they simply just skip the number which people in the region might consider bad and move on to the more appropriate one.
Afterall, consumer perception should always come first in terms of production and marketing..
