When you have just been hurt, hurt and
betrayed in the most horrible way, you do
do crazy things. Even things like posing for nude photographs. Fabian Blackthorn, big, self-confident and invulnerable, wa
never going to understand that. ‘I want
you to remember two things,’ he said to
her, starring hard into her eyes. ‘Say as
little as possible once we are in there———
and trust me, whatever happens. Got
that?’
‘Yes,’ She said.
‘Okay, let’s go and meet Cerise Hunniford.’
Cerise Hunniford was waiting for them in the penthouse suite. She was thirtyish, petite, redheaded and she worked hard at being sexy. Her clinging black blouse set off her smooth, tanned skin perfectly, adding glitter to the blue eyes, and making the wide red mouth seem even brighter. A formidable and formidably attractive woman, Cathy thought with a sinking heart, and not one to play games with.
She ushered them to comfortable chairs in front of her vast, spotlessly neat desk, and lit a cigarette with a slim gold lighter.
'You look surprised, Mr Blackthorn,' She drawled through a cloud of Turkish smoke. 'Didn't you expect to find a woman at the head of a company?'
'I didn't expect to find a woman in command of an enterprise like this one,' he admitted. Cathy glanced around the sleek, ultra modern office. The butter milk yellow Walls were decorated with block mounted covers from Aphrodite's many publications --------------- Caprice, Dreamgirls, Adam's Domain, Rascals ...... Crimson lips and sultry eyes, hints of expensively presented and glamorous sex within. A cleverly organised array of glossy, pricey magazines that kept perfect pace between what was chic and fashionable, and what was frankly erotic.
Cerise Hunniford followed Cathy's gaze with catlike mascaraed eyes.
'You disapprove? That's not very liberated of you, Miss Milner. You made a wise choice in coming to Caprice, believe me. Glamour sells very well, especially when it's spiced with a little raw sex in the name of intellectual liberation --------- and we pay our models well'.
Cathy didn't reply to the subtly barbed taunt.
'You seem to be doing well on the mixture,' Fabian Blackthorn said coolly. 'Your product seems a street ahead of the average glamour magazine.'
'We like to think it's several blocks ahead,' Cerise Hunniford said with a brilliant smile. Her thirty odd years of life had added an alluring sensuality to a face already made beautiful by nature.
Looking at her trim, provocatively dressed figure, Cathy guessed at hours of squash, saunas and massage. Three or four holidays a year in exotic locations. And, naturally, a steady supply of expert lovers. She glanced quickly at Fabian Blackthorn's impassive face. Was he finding this woman desirable? The thought angered her, but she bit her feelings down. Her role, he had commanded, was to say as little as possible, and that was what she is going to do.
'Aphrodite is one of this country's leading publishers,' the woman went on. 'Over the past five years, I have changed the face of glamour magazines in this country. I have nothing to be ashamed of.'
'I am not cricising you,' Fabian reminded her calmly.
'Maybe you just have that sort of face,' Cerise Hunniford purred. She exhaled smoke through a deliberately open mouth like the muzzle of a gun. Her eyes lingered on Fabian Blackthorn's body, then moved up to his face, unperturbed by the hard challenge in his eyes. Cathy squirmed furiously in her chair. Having to sit and watch this creature flirt with Fabian was a kind of horrible torture. It was all she could do to remember his "trust me". Cerise's sharp eyes didn't miss her slight movement, and she turned to Cathy. Her smile was mocking, slow, a fuse burning towards dynamite. 'You think me disgusting, Miss Milner?'
