It was my birthday and
everyone forgot, even my
family members.
I was sad and decided to sleep
day away. At 3pm someone
banged on my door not too loudly but loud enough to wake
me up pissed. I sat up
squeezing my face wondering
who the hell wanted to disturb
my pathetic sleep. I shouted
who is there still sitting on my bed. “it’s me tola come open
the door”. It was my neighbor
and classmate, we were in
between acquaintance and
friend so he had no right
banging on my door. I stood up from the bed grudgingly and
unlocked the door. “Happy
birthday” he shouted as I
opened the door and threw one
arm around my shoulder to hug
me and I gave him a side hug reluctantly. He let go and
stretches out his other arm. “I
got a small fruit cake and wine,
I know you like both fruit cake
and red wine” he said excited. I
wondered how he knew and I immediately remembered I had
mentioned it to my best friend
just the day before hinting her
and he was seated next to her
so he probably over heard.
(Still she forgot.) “oh and I got a candle, we would stick it in
the cake, light it up and you
could make a wish” he added
breaking my thought. “I don’t
believe in that” I said with a
smile building up in my heart. “I don’t either, where we come
from this is a joke I know, but
today we believe in it and
tomorrow we can laugh at it” he
replied me and chuckled lightly.
I then realized we had been standing by the door the whole
time so I told him to come in.
We sat at my small kitchen
table, he unwrapped the cake
and stuck the candle in it and
we both laughed. I got the box of matches and lit the small
blue candle.
“Now you make a wish” he
said still very much excited.
There were so many things I
wanted so I asked if I could have more than one wish
“No you can’t, just one” he
replied smiling with his eyes.
He had such beautiful eyes, I
had never noticed. I smiled and
closed my eyes and thought about my wish contemplating
which one was most important,
I picked one then blew the
flame out. We ate the cake and
talked in between sipping
cheap wine. I paused and stared at him for two seconds
then looked away and hoped
my wish would come through.
He was all I needed to make
my day and eventually my
life. My wish was that we could become best friends and be
best friends forever. I
eventually married my best
friend. My wish did come
through, and now every year
we make it a tradition; fruit cake, a candle and cheap
wine. Maybe someday it will
change but for now we are just
fine with that. Rate This
