CHAPTER 10
The day has finally arrived, I woke up quite early that day
and I did the chores that belong to me. Little did I know
what was ahead of me? On my way to the match, I met
father sitting in the living room, I greeted him good
morning and he responded quite friendly that day and he
wished me good luck in the day. As I stepped out of the
house, his words echoed in my head and I thought was
this father? Did anyone preach to him? All these thoughts
were going through my head because ever since I started
playing football, father has never supported me or wished
me good luck. I had to forget this quick so as not to get
into my game.
I arrived at our training pitch at 9:00am and I was
surprised to see everyone present, I had thought I would
be the first but I was actually the last to arrive. I greeted
everyone and I took a seat in one of the chairs provided.
We had a little chat and at 10:00am, we took part in a light
training but Kenny was exempted so as to have much time
to rest. After the light training, we rested a bit before
Coachie came out to set the formation for our crucial
game. Coachie said since we would play a 3-6-1
formation, mikes as the goalkeeper; skippo, thunder, opa
as the back three; matan and salam as the wingbacks
oyinbo, chibu, Rolando, mikalo as the four man midfield
and myself as the lone man forward. We got the first
surprised of the day when Coachie gave everyone his
jersey and the jersey was special because it had the
inscription “future stars vs. Howard fc; street league final
2014” imprinted on it, I got my usual number 10 jersey
and the captain armband was handed to me before we set
out. The second surprise of the day was when Coachie
said we would go the stadium by a bus which he has
provided although the distance from our pitch to the venue
was trek able. We rested a bit as everyone made sure he
was ready for the game. We departed from our pitch at
2:30 pm although the game was schedule for 4:00pm.
We arrived at the stadium few minutes before 3 and it was
a packed stadium even when the match hasn’t
commenced. We took a walk round the pitch and we all
were marveled at what we saw. Just when we were about
to go into the changing room, Howard fc bus arrived and
Coachie stopped, he ordered everyone except me to go. I
alongside Coachie went to were Howard fc parked their
bus. Coachie waved at everyone in the bus but he waited
for Gabriel to come down and he hugged him. I alongside
Coachie, Gabriel and his coach took time to talk for few
minutes and we practically talked about Mr. Olowolayemo
as everyone was careful not to reveal his plans. We left
Gabriel and his coach and we went into the changing room
that has been provided for us, all the lads were ready
except me. I hurriedly changed into my kit that I forgot I
was not putting on the captain’s armband. We were about
leaving for the pitch when Kenny ran to me and handed
me the armband. Ever since I had captained my team, I
took the armband as a life and death thing that forgetting
it that day seems so strange that I had fears if I would fail
in the game but I shrugged it off, wore the captains
armband and we head to the pitch.
On the pitch, Mr. Olowolayemo came over to greet
everyone and I took time to introduce everyone to him. He
left for his seat as we fans waited eagerly for the blast of
the whistle. When the whistle sounded, everyone cheered.
The game commenced and both teams were careful not to
concede first. The first 20 minutes of the game was
uneventful but the game came alive when Gabriel missed
a glorious chance after going past skippo and thunder,
Gabriel was left with only mikes, but he blasted the ball
over the bar. Gabriel however atones for his miss as he
skips past opa before putting the ball into the back of the
net seconds before the half time whistle. We all left the
pitch for our changing rooms and there Coachie gave his
halftime talks but I was carried away with the thoughts
that Howard fc would win the cup and Gabriel would
eventually emerge as the top scorer. It took Kenny’s tap
for me to realize that it was time for the second half to
commence.
We started the second half where we left off in the first
half. Howard fc coach made three changes before the
80th minute mark but Coachie kept faith in us. In the 84th
minutes, Coachie brought in Kenny to replace salam and
that means a change in formation to our 4-3-3 with
everyone going back to his normal position. We received a
huge hope in the 87th minutes when Kenny gave me a
through ball and with a sublime skill I skipped past 2
Howard fc defenders and I buried the ball into the net but
that wasn’t enough because it was a league game and not
a final so Howard fc still had the advantage.
The linesman signaled that 3 minutes would be added on
and the chant of Howard fc fans rented the air because if
it should end in that way at the end of the additional
minutes, Howard fc would emerge champions. The
moment of my life came in the 92nd minutes when Kenny
passed the ball to me with the time ticking down, I
hurriedly passed the ball back to him and he responded
with a sublime pass, I skillfully moved past the last
Howard fc defender and I was left with the keeper and I
buried the ball into the net in one of the cruelest manner
because I never wanted to make a mistake that wont
haunt me. The stadium went agog and the referee didn’t
give Howard fc players a chance to pass. Finally, the final
whistle has sounded and we have emerged champions.
Coachie ran into the field and hugged me tight and then he
moved on to other players. On the other hand, Howard fc
player were down on the pitch crying uncontrollably. While
other players were dancing round the pitch I stood affixed
at a spot smiling but the thought about the best player
was in my head because the best player would have his
education sponsored and moved to Mr. Olowolayemo
academy in the United States of America.
In a twinkle of an eye, the stadium was ready for the
presentation of trophies and the award goes thus.
Goalkeeper of the year: BABTUNDE MICHAEL (MIKES)
Defender of the year: OPA MOSES (OPA)
Midfielder of the year: MUSTAPHA KEHINDE (KENNY)
Striker of the year: KUNLE THOMAS. The striker of the
year award also means the highest goal scorer award.
Coach of the year: MR BABALOLA SEGUN (FUTURE
STARS FC)
Literarily, it was not a surprise that we scoop all the
awards available.
The moment of the day was around as Mr. Olowolayemo
was called to deliver the player of the year award. He took
the microphone and commended every team that had
participated; he also reiterated that with the success the
first edition has just recorded, he would do more in the
coming editions. He stated further that the player of the
year award was close but there must be a winner, he
paused for few seconds as he announced that the player
of the year award goes to …………….. My heart skipped a bit
but on hearing KUNLE I didn’t wait for him to finish before
I ran to the podium, he hugged me as he handed the player
of the year award to me. He brought out some document
which I signed as he said to me I would leave for the
united states of America in a week time that my passport
and visa was ready in Lagos. He said the decision was
made before the game so he had sent my details which he
got from the players registration to the United States
embassy in Lagos.
I alongside Coachie and other team mates went back to
the podium to receive our winner’s medals. On getting
back to the pitch I met the shock of my life, father was
standing right there beside mother and I hugged them
both. I never knew he came to the pitch. He however said
although he never believed in my abilities as a footballer
but now that it has paved way for me I should make sure
that I get educated because that was his dream but now I
can go into any career I want. I hugged him again. Just
then someone came over to call me, father and mother
and it was Mr. Olowolayemo who sent for us. He talked
briefly with father and mother then he turned to me and
said I would return to Lagos with him. I asked for few
minutes as I returned to thank Coachie for believing in me,
I hugged everyone who was present but I cried when I got
to Kenny, I had created a bond with Kenny that was
beyond football and I promised to communicate with him
frequently. I took some photographs with the team and
left.
Mother had gone to bring few clothes for me, I hurriedly
went into the changing room and I changed into one of the
clothes. Just then a car arrived and I entered with Mr.
Olowolayemo, I waved to father and mother as the car
leaves the stadium. Indeed football was my destiny.
