This work is not to encourage anyone not to go to school
or despise education, in fact it is the best legacy one can
ever live with but to encourage everyone out there that
aside education, there a hidden talent deposited in every
individual out there and this talent deposited in each
individual by GOD can take us places.
CHAPTER ONE
Kenny please pass, let me score with my new boot I
screamed but I was awaken by a slap I received from my
dad, so I have been dreaming all this while but in reality I
just bought a new boot and I am excited because it took
me years to buy this boot, after years of training in a
patched boot which I inherited from mothers younger
brother, so now I can play and train in a much comfortable
boot. I was excited that I went to sleep that night without
eating only for my dad’s slap to wake me up the next
morning. I am kunle Thomas and here is my story.
Being the only male child and the last child in a family of
five, much responsibilities was vested on me at a young
age because father said I am the only male child of the
family and that sooner or later my sisters would get
married and go to their husbands house and change
surname, that I would be the only one to retain our family
name, so I must be educated so as to live a better life
when I grow up and take of him and mother when they
grow old. born in the early 2000’s to bode Thomas a 45
year old civil servant and Mary Thomas a 40 year old
trader, life was much easy for me growing up because
being a boy and the last child of the family I did less or
little chores. With this I spent some time with my father
but I spent greater part on the football field because I had
dreamt of becoming a footballer. Trouble started when I
told father that I would be taking football as a profession
when I am through with school, this irked father because
he had always wanted me to become a doctor. It was on a
faithful Saturday in 2014 sitting alongside my two sisters’
bunmi and bose alongside father and mother, due to the
environmental sanitation going on, mother was at home
and father hasn’t gone out. I told father bluntly that when I
am through with my junior waec examinations which
come up in few months, I would focus more on my
football training so that I could be like messi someday.
little messi was actually my nick in training because of the
way I play, not that I haven’t been going to training but it
was more like a bit part training, so I thought after exams
I would go into full time training. Mother has always been
supportive in anything I do because she had this believe in
my abilities and my dreams of becoming a footballer, also
due to the fact that her brother once played in the national
team but he told me he missed out narrowly on the 1980
world cup due to an injury he suffered in the qualifiers
against Gabon and since then he didn’t rediscover his
form so he had to quit football and focus on becoming a
coach and currently he is the coach of bontel united a club
competing in the national league, uncle tade story was
also a major drive in my dreams of becoming a footballer
because I have heard on radio and watched on television
players saying how proud they are to represent the
national team. Father on the other hand has never
supported my dream of becoming a footballer, he has
always been a man that says education is the only thing in
life and he was not the football type, he only watch
football when Nigeria is playing and that was if it is shown
on terrestrial television. He once told me a story of how
football killed his childhood friend, so since then he hated
anything football, even it took his friend intervention
before he could allow me to go to training and he said
bluntly that day he won’t cover any expenses if one day I
get injured on the pitch. That’s gone for now but there’s
fire on the mountain and a big hurdle to cross in my path
to becoming a footballer. Less I forget I am a diehard
Chelsea fan and willian is my be

CHAPTER 2 It’s a dream come true for me to train with MR Babalola arguably the best coach in my area. Mr. Babalola has seen me play once and he fell in love with my game, prior to me join his team I learnt he once told his team that he saw a good player that was much better than anyone in his team and I confirmed the statement after I joined his team. Joining future stars fc was not easy because Mr. babalola came to my house thrice to plead with father to allow me join his team, I remember him telling father that he would protect me and help me improve on my game not only that he would help my education because he is a teacher himself, his love for football made him become a coach though that was after school hours. I remember my first day in training, the excitement on Mr. Babalola’s face was much that after training that day he took time to educate us on the laws of the game. Before he took his time to educate us, he introduced me to the other guys in the team and their names are as follow: Aaron Samuel (skippo) Babatunde Michael (b.mikes) Opa Moses (opa) Chibuzor azubike (cihibu) Roland mobta (Rolando) Daniel adegbuyi ( adeys) Michael Isaac ( mikalo) Jinadu yussuf (jinadu) Salami abdul ( salam) Chinaza godwin ( godwin) Opabunmi femi (okada) Michael’s john (oyibo) Soneye taiwo (thunder) Olarewaju matanmi (matan) Mustapha Kehinde (Kenny) Actually we were more than these in the team but these were the guys present that day. In his words Coachie said this is kunle Thomas “little messi”, I have brought him to add extra flare to our game and put fear in the minds of our opponent. Then he proceeded and said this laws I will be teaching you is to make you have a fundamental knowledge of the game. The registration to make our team play in the street league has commenced and it would be completed in the next few weeks, so you all need to have a basic knowledge of the game. Then he proceeded to the teaching: “Football is the most popular sport in the world, although there are thousands of sports out there. The main objective in football is to secure points and this can be done in three ways You get 3 points when you win a game by any margin, regardless of the score line. Although, the number of goals you score is an added advantage to you You get 1 point when you draw a game, that is if the number of goals you score at the end of the game is same as that of your opponent You get 0 or no point if you lose the game by any margin, and the number of goals you concede will count. To start a standard football game you need 11 players which is 1 goal keeper and 10 outfield players. Primarily in football there are four main positions and I will explain them Goalkeeper: the goalkeeper is the only player allowed on the pitch to use his hands, but he is restricted to his 18” yard box. The function of the goalkeeper is to prevent the ball from going into the net. Defender: the number of defenders in a game varies on the formation the coach wants to play, but in football most coaches use 4 defenders which is a right back, a left back and two central defenders. The main function of the defenders is to protect the goalkeeper and protect the team from conceding. Midfielder: the number of midfielders also depends on the team formation. The midfielder serves as a link between the defenders and the strikers. But in recent times, there are two types of midfielders, the defensive midfielder and the attacking midfielder. Striker: the striker is the one who has the primary function of scoring goals. If you will win a game most often depends on the striker. I hope at the end of this short lecture, you can now choose the position you are good at Coachie said. He went on to say there are many laws and rules in football but we will continue some other time, we said our prayers and everyone went home. Home that night was very interesting because everyone in the family could sense how happy I am but then I have about 2 weeks more to train before I retire to my books as examination would commence in few weeks and father won’t allow me to go to training. This thought was on my head that I slept off without taking dinner for the second time in a week.

CHAPTER 3 All my life up until this moment, GREATSHED SCHOOLS has been the school I had went to; it was like a family school because that was where my two sisters had their secondary education. My school is located just about 1km from our home so most times I trek to school and it is one of the best in the local government because of the conducive environment and qualified teachers we posses. My school was also known for its academic and sporting excellence so no doubt that a brilliant boy like me attends such school. One thing I loved most about my school is that they give opportunity to everyone who could represent the school in sport or academics and I was a testimony as I have been drafted into the school team since jss2 and I get to train with the bigger boys in ss1 to ss3. I had always been among the top 3 student in my class, so when I get to represent the school my teachers had no doubt in me that it wouldn’t affect me academically. Exams are just 2 weeks away and I had stopped training so as to focus more on my books. It was just a week to exams that we were called to check our seat numbers for exams and I was number 133 out of 150 students taking the exams, the time table for exams was out and it would be done in 3 weeks, I was a partially happy because I would have enough time to study but on the other hand our football competition would be coming up in 5 weeks but all this while Coachie has always called to check out on how prepared I am for exams and he would always tell me about the competition on the other hand. Exams started on 20th February 2014 and the first two subjects were business studies and mathematics, ever since I came into secondary school I had this dislike for business studies because I was not the type who loved calculations, same as mathematics but I was happy the first two subjects were the ones I disliked most and after that I would have less headache on the remaining subjects. I shunned all contact I could have with the boys in training so as not to get distracted. I studied hard and in a twinkle of an eye, exams were done. The last day of the exams was very emotional for me because I would be leaving my friends, although many had promised that they would have their senior secondary education in the school but I know some might not make it. Many might wonder why the sudden change in my stand on not going into senior secondary school but that changed because father said the only condition he would allow me go to training was to accept that I would go to senior secondary school so I had no choice than to accept. I was very glad that exams were over because I would have the opportunity to train more. during exam Coachie called to tell me that our club had been accepted into the street league and so we would be having our first official match as a team soon and that would be a friendly game against fellow newcomers Howard fc and then a competition before we start the league proper, So I look forward to the game. Aside these thoughts, father had warned me that there would be trouble if I fail to pass my exams. So why I was fantasizing about my first game, on the other hand I was praying for a good result.

CHAPTER 4 Jog round boys, fast, 1, 2,3,4,5 these were the orders of Coachie as we put a final preparation for our first game as a team against Howard fc. Training that day was tough because we had to be put through our paces; we also had a test on our strengths, ability, jump and so on. We trained for about 4 hours that day as we had to practice series of free kicks, corner kicks, and penalty; for the defenders; he took special session with them because he told us how dangerous Howard fc strikers were especially Gabriel. Coachie knew Gabriel so well because he once coached him as a kid but stories went around that Gabriel parent told him to leave because they thought Gabriel was too good for a club like future stars. At the end of training that day, Coachie called us over to motivate us and tell us the team to play tomorrow and something unusual happened today since I started training. When I started training I had only trained with about 17 players but today I could see about 27 players. Coachie has always stressed on commitment and that no one is indispensable, he said he would stick with the guys who had been regular in training for the past weeks and for the other guys they would have to buckle up because the street league rules states that only 20 players are allowed for the league so about 7 players would be dropped from our team. Coachie said as I have taught you in the last few weeks, tomorrow we would play a 4-3-3 formation mikes as the goalkeeper; skippo, thunder, opa and matan as the back four; oyinbo, chibu, Kenny as the midfielders; then Rolando, mikalo and myself as the front 3, and for the other guys who failed to make the match Coachie said one way to show their commitment to the team once again was to attend the game even when they know they won’t play. The pitch in which we play was one of the best in the local government; it was actually donated by one of Coachie former player as a way of giving back so we rarely play our games outside our pitch. After this, Coachie said everyone should converge tomorrow at 2 pm as the match was slated for 4pm so we could have time to do walkouts and light training. Coachie ended the training with a prayer. I packed my bags and was at the gate leading to the exit when I heard a voice shouted kunle! Kunle!! Kunle!!, instantly I knew it was Coachie because he was the only one who called me by my name others prefer to say little messi or sometimes kunlex, I ran back to meet him and he said I know tomorrow is your first game with the team but I am building the team around you so don’t disappoint me, I said to him I won’t disappoint Coachie and he gave me a pat on my back and I left him. It was 15 past 6 in the evening but Coachie stayed back to monitor some guys whom he had appointed to help clean and make sure the pitch is in good condition and ready for the game.

CHAPTER 5 Sleeping that night was a nightmare for me because I dreamt I had a serious injury during the course of the game and that was what father has always said to me. Due to my nick I loved dribbling and in football people who dribble a lot are prone to injuries, that also made the dream much terrifying for me but I prayed to God and summon up courage that I would play my game. It was game day, future stars vs. Howard fc the most anticipated game in my community. I arrived at our pitch just few minutes before the deadline Coachie gave to us to converge and I must say the crowd I met there that day was much that I knew it would be a great game. Our preparation for the game, the fans in the stadium made the game looked like a cup final that it was hard to believe it was just a friendly. Everyone converged at the time agreed and we took a walk round our pitch before doing some light training. At 3:30 pm a bus arrived and we learnt it was Howard fc, Coachie went over to greet their coach and I saw him hug Gabriel, seems they have buried the hatchet and I also saw them laugh over a joke before coach came to us to allocate jerseys to the players. Just when coach was about doing that, a message came through that the coordinators of the street league were around, coach left us to have a little chat with them, then he was back to inform us that although a referee had been arranged between both teams, but the coordinators came with their referee to assess the team knowledge of the game and the coordinators came to check the readiness of the team for the street league. Jerseys were allocated and I got the jersey number 10 and our jersey was a blue top over a while short with a blue socks while Howard fc jersey was a yellow over yellow shorts with a yellow socks. Meanwhile the other guys whom Coachie punished came. Skippo led the team out amidst cheers from the crowd. The game started at 4pm and it was Howard fc to kick off the game. Just about ten minutes into the game we missed two goals in quick succession. First, it was mikalo who had his shot saved by the cross bar, oyinbo and Kenny had combined well in the midfield, before Kenny squared the ball to me I moved past two players with a sublime skill before squaring the ball to mikalo who had his effort saved by the crossbar. The second one was a glorious chance I missed after Kenny had cross the ball to me in the 18 yard box, a mistake between the Howard goalkeeper and defender means I was left with only the goal post, my miss could be likened to that of yakubu aiyegbeni during the 2010 world cup, I was disappointed because this was my first game and I should bury those chances, frustration and disappointment was written on coachie’s face. We were punished and made to suffer for our miss as Gabriel punished us with two goals in quick succession, before the halftime whistle sounded. We were clearly the better side but at halftime we were two goals down. Coachie was frustrated at the team but especially at my performance because he had so much trust in my abilities. The second half started and we continued in the same way we left in the first half, we kept possession and wasted lot of chances and I was culpable for most of them. When Coachie could no longer tolerate my game, he pulled me off and adeys was brought on to replace me. I was utterly disappointed at my performance and I wept like a baby where I was. The game continued as we conceded two more goals, one more from Gabriel to complete his hat trick before another midfielder from Howard fc put the icing on the cake. However, there was hope for a dry bone as mikalo pull two goals back for our team in the dying minutes of the game, but that wasn’t enough to save us from a defeat. At the end of the game, the crowd cheered us for our performance and we could confidently say “the better team lost”, the organizers of the street league pulled us over to give us a word of encouragement and expressed satisfaction over our performance and they said to us to get prepared for the street league in a month’s time. It was time to leave and Coachie bade them goodbye but not without sharing a joke with Gabriel. They left and Coachie came back to us, he commended everyone but he scolded everyone, he was angry with me that he said with my performance today, he doesn’t think I would make the cut for the street league, then he dismissed everyone. I walked slowly home that day because I thought if I don’t make the street league team, all my hope of becoming a footballer is going down the drain. I was unhappy that I forgot to eat that night.

CHAPTER 6 Coachie was very disappointed with our display that day; he ordered that there won’t be any training for the week. With this, I had enough time to rest and think about my future. My display that day was very dismal, I thought what could have happened, but then I was thankful that the bad dream I had didn’t come to pass. After an uneventful Monday and Tuesday, I sat down in the living room to take a look at my phone, actually ever since preparation for our match started I had not log in into any social media account, so I thought what a perfect way to check what the guys have been up to in the last few weeks. A message from glo threw me off balance, it says “dear customer, your 2.5gb data would expire in 2 days” I shrugged so it’s almost one month. I forgot the fact that I wanted to log in to my social media account that I quickly unplugged my phone from when I had plugged it, then immediately I search for “how to become a better player” I downloaded some and I streamed some. A message again came from glo and it says “dear customer, your 200mb data would expire in 2 days, kindly recharge to roll over your data” atlas even if I don’t use this 200mb I would be happy my 2.5gb didn’t go down the drain. I was about to off my data when a whatsapp message from my best friend Daniel came and it reads “guy, result don come out o” I opened the message and I replied “oh boy, na true?” before Daniel could reply, about 3 other messages came and all said result is out and everyone passed. Since I heard everyone passed, I didn’t bother myself because I know I would pass. I took off my phone again from where I had plugged it, and then I opened my opera mini app to log in my examination number on the site to check my result. I was very happy when I saw the result as I had “A” in my entire subject except mathematics and business studies where I got a “C” expectedly. I was waiting for father to return from work, little did I know it was the beginning of my troubles and journey to greatness. Father returned early from work that day, I took off his bag and took it to his room before I moved back to the living room where father had already put on the television to listen to 6’o clock news on NTA. I was about telling father about my result when he said congrats kunle my son on your result, I smiled and said father I told you football won’t stop me from having a good result. Father then said, when your mum returns from the market place, we would discuss on what next to do. Mother returned early that day at 7 pm and I was wondering if father and mother had a meeting before leaving that morning. Mother served dinner and when we were done it was time to talk about my future but that didn’t happen until father called sisters who were in the university to inform them of my result and that in 2 years or so I would be done with secondary school. Father then turned to me and said kunle now that your result is good, which department are you going to? As you know you have to choose between sciences, commercial or art department. I said bluntly to father that I want to go to art department and then I can proceed to study mass communication. My reply irked father because he had always wanted me to be a doctor but I was bent on becoming a journalist after I had listened to several sport programs on radio. Mother tried to beg him to allow me have my wish but he was not getting any of that. The argument went on for some time that father slapped me for the first time ever and he vowed not to support me again and that it is left for me to decide and if I choose to have my way, I should be ready to sponsor my education. This left me really sad but I think I have chosen the path I felt was right for me.

CHAPTER 7 Hours turn to days, days to weeks, father hasn’t change his stance on my education despite mothers plea but on the other hand I am bent on making my dreams come true and allow myself control my destiny and not someone else. After my dismal performance at my first ever game, I was very disappointed but I was much determined than ever before to get to the top. Training resumed and it was much harder than before because Coachie said with the performance we had against future stars, if we continue with that pattern we would be relegated at the end of the season and that would dent his image because he has always been a winner. Training resumed and it was much difficult for me because father has stopped giving me money and I was surviving on the little mother gives me and sometimes tips from Coachie. We started training on Monday just two weeks to the start of the street league. I must say ever since we started training it has always been a full team and everyone had to give about 100% because everyone wants to make the cut for the street league. Training in this weeks were hard because I trained for 3 days on empty stomach and it affected my performance that rumors were flying around the team that I won’t make the cut despite Coachie appraisal of my abilities when I first joined the team. After 8 days of training, Coachie arranged a game against some guys in the neighborhood because no team was ready to play against each other as everyone wants to keep their fresh legs for the street league. What further ascertains the fact that I might not make the cut for the team was when Coachie handed me the last jersey and he told me I won’t start the game and I might not get to play but I should be prepared. We led the first half through 2 brilliant goals from Kenny; however the first 15 minutes of the second half was a shadow of our last game. We conceded 2 goals and there seems to be fire on the mountain again. With 20 minutes left to the end of the game, Coachie told me to pull of my bib and I was to come on for chibu playing deep from the midfield, a different role from my normal position. I was determined to give my best and to God be the glory I got a goal and an assist but deep down my heart I was afraid I won’t make the cut but with my performance in the game I had a little confidence I would make the team. Coachie commended us after the game, and he said we are 70% ready for the street league and during the course of the season we would improve. He further said we would have a day off and converge the day after tomorrow to learn our fate, he said there are 20 slots for 27 players and he would attend the street league media conference tomorrow to get the approved players list and get the fixtures list for the season. We said our prayers and we left for our various homes. The deal day is here, everyone arrived at the pitch early that day with no training kit and we await the arrival of Coachie. Coachie arrived 10 minutes behind schedule that day and he apologized. He went straight to the business of the day. Coachie started with the team list for the street league, but to be honest not everyone was interested in the teams everyone wanted to hear our players list for the competition. Coachie told us that the league is a single match league due to the fact that they want to end it before secondary schools resume and the fact that the sponsor MR FELA OLOWOLAYEMO a rich business tycoon would be going back to the state in some weeks. MR FELA OLOWOLAYEMO grew up in my community before moving to Lagos and he later made it big as a business tycoon, he said the street league is a way of giving back to the community and that one player would join his soccer school based in the United States and he would sponsor the players’ education. MR FELA was quoted to have said he could have taken more players but this being the first one; he wants to see the progress of the first player before taking much players. Coachie said the 10 teams would participate in the street league are FUTURE STARS FC HOWARD FC PES UNITED BLITZ FC SUPER STARS FC CWAY FC NEWCLIME FC NESTLE FC CTSS FC FUTU FC To be honest Howard fc were the only threat we foresee but in football no team is indispensable.

CHAPTER 8 After reading out the teams, Coachie read the fixtures list and then he kept mute for about 2 minutes before announcing the moments everyone was waiting for. Meanwhile all this while the troubles at home were getting much that it took the intervention of father’s best friend Mr. kolade if not mother and father would have gone their separate ways but I was keen on making it with football at the expense of my education. Coachie went on to say he feels the team he has selected were the best legs for the competition and the ones who were not selected should stay with the team and train but they won’t get to participate. He went on to sound a note of warning to the selected players, he said those who I have selected, not that you were better than the ones not selected but due to some technical aspect and abilities of each player, I have decided to pick these players and you must prove that your selection is the best for the team. The silence at the pitch can be likened to that of the grave yard as Coachie read out the names. Aaron Samuel (skippo) Babatunde Michael (b.mikes) Opa moses (opa) Chibuzor azubike (cihibu) Roland mobta (Rolando) Daniel adegbuyi ( adeys) Michael Isaac ( mikalo) Jinadu yussuf (jinadu) Salami abdul ( salam) Chinaza godwin ( godwin) Opabunmi femi (okada) Michaels john ( oyibo) Oworu olamide (ola) Olarewaju matanmi (matan) Mustapha Kehinde (Kenny) Ade agbolahan (adex) Johnson peters (Johnson) Mohammed folorunsho (mo) Saka badmus (b admus) Kunle thomas (little messi) © Coachie read out the names one after the other and my heart skipped as the names were read, when it got to the last number, he said the last name would captain the team, when my name was called I jumped not knowing when I hugged Coachie. He said skippo would be the assistant captain for the team. There was much joy for the 20 players selected but the other 7 players they felt very unlucky but they were ready to train with the team. Coachie took time once again to educate us about the laws of the game, but this time he explained more on the league format which we were about to embark on

CHAPTER 9 I went home that night as a happy boy forgetting the troubles I had at home. It was game day, our first ever street league game against new clime fc. It was few minutes to the game, Coachie handed us our blue over white short jersey and my usual number 10 before giving me the captain armband. For once I felt like a king, the captain armband on my left leading the team out was a proud moment for me. The game started and we went past our opponent like a wounded lion, half time scores was 4-0, I had complete my hat trick and set up another. The game ended 7-0 although I didn’t score in the second half but I had two more assist in the game. We recorded victories against pes united, Bliz fc, super stars fc and cway fc. A draw against nestle fc brought on level terms with familiar foe Howard fc who drew their first game and won the rest. We won our last two games against ctss and futu fc to set up an epic final game with Howard fc that we had same point with but they were ahead with 2 goals. It was the last game of the street league and it was against Howard fc. It seems the organizers of the league knew what was in store that our last game was against Howard fc. After 8 games we were on 22 points same as our opponent but they were two goals ahead. The game was a special game for us because it would decide the winner of league and aside that I and Gabriel were tied on goals and the individual that scores the most goals would win the highest goals scorer award. Most importantly due to the nature of the game, it would be played in the newly constructed stadium that was built by Mr. olowolayemo and that day would decide who he would take to the united states of America, although rumors had been flying around that Gabriel was the top choice but that didn’t bother me. A day to the game, since we were on holiday we started training at 8: 00 am and we ended at quarter past six in the evening. Training that day was between life and death as we trained very hard and Coachie had bought our breakfast and lunch which means we would spend the day training. We tried series of formations, we were put through our paces, the training was so in tensed that Kenny went down at a point and it took the intervention of a Good Samaritan who had come to watch our training to revive Kenny. Coachie ended training that day by saying we would play a different formation which is 3-6-1 and that I would play as the lone man upfront but Kenny would start from the bench. With this, I knew the game would be difficult because after our first game together, we have created a strong partnership on the pitch that Kenny could locate me on the pitch with his eyes closed. We departed training that day with much excitement in our minds because this is one opportunity to shake hands with Mr. olowolayemo and the opportunity to play in the new stadium. I got home that day with the thoughts of father and mother and the thought about tomorrow game because that would be a life time opportunity for me to study and play football. On getting home, I cleaned my boot and I carefully packed them where no one would tamper with it. I went to sleep that day but after taking my favorite dish which is plantain and beans.

CHAPTER 10 The day has finally arrived, I woke up quite early that day and I did the chores that belong to me. Little did I know what was ahead of me? On my way to the match, I met father sitting in the living room, I greeted him good morning and he responded quite friendly that day and he wished me good luck in the day. As I stepped out of the house, his words echoed in my head and I thought was this father? Did anyone preach to him? All these thoughts were going through my head because ever since I started playing football, father has never supported me or wished me good luck. I had to forget this quick so as not to get into my game. I arrived at our training pitch at 9:00am and I was surprised to see everyone present, I had thought I would be the first but I was actually the last to arrive. I greeted everyone and I took a seat in one of the chairs provided. We had a little chat and at 10:00am, we took part in a light training but Kenny was exempted so as to have much time to rest. After the light training, we rested a bit before Coachie came out to set the formation for our crucial game. Coachie said since we would play a 3-6-1 formation, mikes as the goalkeeper; skippo, thunder, opa as the back three; matan and salam as the wingbacks oyinbo, chibu, Rolando, mikalo as the four man midfield and myself as the lone man forward. We got the first surprised of the day when Coachie gave everyone his jersey and the jersey was special because it had the inscription “future stars vs. Howard fc; street league final 2014” imprinted on it, I got my usual number 10 jersey and the captain armband was handed to me before we set out. The second surprise of the day was when Coachie said we would go the stadium by a bus which he has provided although the distance from our pitch to the venue was trek able. We rested a bit as everyone made sure he was ready for the game. We departed from our pitch at 2:30 pm although the game was schedule for 4:00pm. We arrived at the stadium few minutes before 3 and it was a packed stadium even when the match hasn’t commenced. We took a walk round the pitch and we all were marveled at what we saw. Just when we were about to go into the changing room, Howard fc bus arrived and Coachie stopped, he ordered everyone except me to go. I alongside Coachie went to were Howard fc parked their bus. Coachie waved at everyone in the bus but he waited for Gabriel to come down and he hugged him. I alongside Coachie, Gabriel and his coach took time to talk for few minutes and we practically talked about Mr. Olowolayemo as everyone was careful not to reveal his plans. We left Gabriel and his coach and we went into the changing room that has been provided for us, all the lads were ready except me. I hurriedly changed into my kit that I forgot I was not putting on the captain’s armband. We were about leaving for the pitch when Kenny ran to me and handed me the armband. Ever since I had captained my team, I took the armband as a life and death thing that forgetting it that day seems so strange that I had fears if I would fail in the game but I shrugged it off, wore the captains armband and we head to the pitch. On the pitch, Mr. Olowolayemo came over to greet everyone and I took time to introduce everyone to him. He left for his seat as we fans waited eagerly for the blast of the whistle. When the whistle sounded, everyone cheered. The game commenced and both teams were careful not to concede first. The first 20 minutes of the game was uneventful but the game came alive when Gabriel missed a glorious chance after going past skippo and thunder, Gabriel was left with only mikes, but he blasted the ball over the bar. Gabriel however atones for his miss as he skips past opa before putting the ball into the back of the net seconds before the half time whistle. We all left the pitch for our changing rooms and there Coachie gave his halftime talks but I was carried away with the thoughts that Howard fc would win the cup and Gabriel would eventually emerge as the top scorer. It took Kenny’s tap for me to realize that it was time for the second half to commence. We started the second half where we left off in the first half. Howard fc coach made three changes before the 80th minute mark but Coachie kept faith in us. In the 84th minutes, Coachie brought in Kenny to replace salam and that means a change in formation to our 4-3-3 with everyone going back to his normal position. We received a huge hope in the 87th minutes when Kenny gave me a through ball and with a sublime skill I skipped past 2 Howard fc defenders and I buried the ball into the net but that wasn’t enough because it was a league game and not a final so Howard fc still had the advantage. The linesman signaled that 3 minutes would be added on and the chant of Howard fc fans rented the air because if it should end in that way at the end of the additional minutes, Howard fc would emerge champions. The moment of my life came in the 92nd minutes when Kenny passed the ball to me with the time ticking down, I hurriedly passed the ball back to him and he responded with a sublime pass, I skillfully moved past the last Howard fc defender and I was left with the keeper and I buried the ball into the net in one of the cruelest manner because I never wanted to make a mistake that wont haunt me. The stadium went agog and the referee didn’t give Howard fc players a chance to pass. Finally, the final whistle has sounded and we have emerged champions. Coachie ran into the field and hugged me tight and then he moved on to other players. On the other hand, Howard fc player were down on the pitch crying uncontrollably. While other players were dancing round the pitch I stood affixed at a spot smiling but the thought about the best player was in my head because the best player would have his education sponsored and moved to Mr. Olowolayemo academy in the United States of America. In a twinkle of an eye, the stadium was ready for the presentation of trophies and the award goes thus. Goalkeeper of the year: BABTUNDE MICHAEL (MIKES) Defender of the year: OPA MOSES (OPA) Midfielder of the year: MUSTAPHA KEHINDE (KENNY) Striker of the year: KUNLE THOMAS. The striker of the year award also means the highest goal scorer award. Coach of the year: MR BABALOLA SEGUN (FUTURE STARS FC) Literarily, it was not a surprise that we scoop all the awards available. The moment of the day was around as Mr. Olowolayemo was called to deliver the player of the year award. He took the microphone and commended every team that had participated; he also reiterated that with the success the first edition has just recorded, he would do more in the coming editions. He stated further that the player of the year award was close but there must be a winner, he paused for few seconds as he announced that the player of the year award goes to …………….. My heart skipped a bit but on hearing KUNLE I didn’t wait for him to finish before I ran to the podium, he hugged me as he handed the player of the year award to me. He brought out some document which I signed as he said to me I would leave for the united states of America in a week time that my passport and visa was ready in Lagos. He said the decision was made before the game so he had sent my details which he got from the players registration to the United States embassy in Lagos. I alongside Coachie and other team mates went back to the podium to receive our winner’s medals. On getting back to the pitch I met the shock of my life, father was standing right there beside mother and I hugged them both. I never knew he came to the pitch. He however said although he never believed in my abilities as a footballer but now that it has paved way for me I should make sure that I get educated because that was his dream but now I can go into any career I want. I hugged him again. Just then someone came over to call me, father and mother and it was Mr. Olowolayemo who sent for us. He talked briefly with father and mother then he turned to me and said I would return to Lagos with him. I asked for few minutes as I returned to thank Coachie for believing in me, I hugged everyone who was present but I cried when I got to Kenny, I had created a bond with Kenny that was beyond football and I promised to communicate with him frequently. I took some photographs with the team and left. Mother had gone to bring few clothes for me, I hurriedly went into the changing room and I changed into one of the clothes. Just then a car arrived and I entered with Mr. Olowolayemo, I waved to father and mother as the car leaves the stadium. Indeed football was my destiny.

finale episode The trip to Lagos was very adventurous, travelling in comfort coupled with the fact that I was in the same bus as business tycoon Mr. Olowolayemo was something I could never had thought of or believed if I was told by a prophet. We arrived Lagos in the early hours of the next day and we lodged into STARS HOTEL, it was arguably the best hotel in Lagos state and I was not surprised Mr. Olowolayemo could afford such place; we went into different rooms to take a rest before we set out for the embassy. At 5:00pm we went to the embassy which was a 15 minutes drive from where we lodge. Seeing my passport being handed over to me was a thing of joy, I have heard mother’s brother talked about how important a passport is if one wants to travel out of the country, getting one of my own was a thing of joy. On the spot, I prostrated before Mr. Olowolayemo for the rare opportunity he just gave me and I promised never to d disappoint him. He just smiled and said he hopes I keep to my words but in all honesty, he didn’t know how joyful and grateful I was for the opportunity. Nothing really much happened over the next two days as Mr. Olowolayemo put final preparations to our journey to the United States as he got the tickets for our departure. A day before our departure, I spoke on phone with father and mother and I could sense that joy had returned to the family, father particularly praised me for my bravery but he still emphasized on me getting educated while mother just talked about how she missed her son and how she doesn’t know when she would see her only son. I rounded off by saying I would communicate with them frequently. Just few minutes after speaking with father and mother, Coachie call came through. I apologized that I didn’t call him when I arrived and he said he understand, then I spoke with every member of the team, I spent much time particularly with Kenny as we talked about how life has been since we won the street league. After speaking with the boys, Coachie took the phone as we talked about how I could adapt to life in an unfamiliar country and how to balance my football with education. The most interesting part of the conversation was when Coachie told me Gabriel was back into his team. He stated that after the game that day, when I had left, it was announced that future stars would participate the nationwide league as a promotion and he had to arrange a transfer with Howard fc on Gabriel and he paid little compensation to Howard fc. We ended the call and I took little time to watch the television before retiring to bed. The 23rd of December 2014 was a day I would never forget; I would be leaving Nigeria for the United States of America to continue my education and football. I alongside Mr. Olowolayemo arrived at marital Mohammed airport at 11:00am although our plane was scheduled to take off at 1:00pm; it was there I knew we would fly in a first-class. After the exciting but tiring 10 hours journey from Nigeria to the United States of America, we arrived and it took us about one hour before we arrived at Mr. Olowolayemo’s lodge. We arrived at a magnificent house and I was not surprised. He introduced me to his family and he said I would rest with him for the day before I move to his academy where I will stay with other guys. I arrived at Mr. olowolayemo academy the following day where I learnt I would be staying with 24 other guys just as my age but everyone had his own room, also I discovered that training here was different from that of Coachie, here we train twice daily and that was after school hours. I progressed quickly through the ranks at Mr. Olowolayemo academy and within 4 years of joining the academy, I left to join new York red bull’s academy to continue my progress. I had my debut in the united state major league at the age of 16 and just weeks after my professional debut I received a call from the national team coach that I had been invited for the country’s upcoming friend lies against Zambia and Belgium. I couldn’t contain my joy because for a player of my age I should be playing with the u20 but now I will train with the big boys. 2 years after I made my professional debut, I graduated from university of wins ford with a first class Hons. degree in journalism and also the overall best graduating student. I had to fly father and mother alongside my two sisters to the united state to share in my joy because I broke a 32 years old record in the school. On my convocation, here was the speech I delivered as the best graduating student ”every kid out there is gifted with a thing or the other, the way we nurture this inborn talent determine how far we would go in life. I remember 6 years ago, I was in a battle with my father over my education, my father insisted on me being a medical doctor but I saw I had a bright future ahead of me in football. Please note to every little kid out there, my story might inspire you but I do not advise anyone to follow my path because what worked for me might be otherwise for you. I remember I performed woefully in my first ever football match on a pitch, but I never allow that you weigh me down. Lesson 1 NEVER GIVE UP, also my first game taught me so many things. Today, I looked back and thought what if I didn’t make it as a footballer, because after my first game I had doubt in my abilities as a footballer, lesson number 2 FAILURE ISNT THE END OF ONES DREAM OR JOURNEY, IT’S THE START OF THE NEW ONE. Finally, I urge every parent out there to give their children a chance to exhibit their God giving talent, talent aren’t deposited in children just to show off but to make them become better human in future if they are given the chance to express it. My dad never gave me the opportunity to play football willingly, but today the football he rejected has brought me places and even I have acquired the education he had always wished I should have. Indeed football is my destiny. THE END
