Synopsis

A first encounter brings two people together in a
twist of events that changes them in ways they
never imagined and places the most important
thing they hold dear to the greatest test of all…

Christopher Ayodele is the most eligible bachelor.
With a successful career, he has spent all his life
focused on his career with no space in his life
for any other thing or so he thought.

Everything
in his life was going well as he planned until a
first encounter made him to realize that there is
something important missing in his life.

Samantha Menziwa is hot, beautiful and trendy.
She has the body of a super model and
everything appears so perfect on the outside.
But this sexy damsel has a few secrets of her
own with scars that she didn’t believe anyone
could help her heal. Her personal life has kept
her in bondage even as the image of the cause
of her greatest problem lurks in her shadows…

TWO SOULS MEET

Everything changes as two souls meet in a first
encounter that sets events in motion and
changes them in ways they never imagined.
From the streets of Lagos to the streets of
Fairland and Pretoria, both of them must fight
their emotional battles as they engage a
common enemy that threatens to come between
them and break them apart.

As they strike the least alliances and make
friends and foes in the unlikeliest places, will
their challenges tear them apart and bring
everything crumbling down or will they be able to
overcome the greatest test of all and follow the
message of their hearts?

Episode 1 I went to a youth conference at the Lekki in Lagos. After the event, I decided to go and relax at the beach. There I made new friends, Moses – a tall dark boy with bulging pockets. I don’t know what he puts in there. In fact, he is a talkative; and Timothy- a Lagos boy that uses slangs to show that he has swag. Actually Timothy is of average height, and he is chocolate. I am fair and 5 feet 6 inches tall. I think my complexion makes me to stick out like a sore thumb. We actually discovered that we are all of the same age. The three of us are all thirty years of age; all of us single and searching. Already Moses and Timothy have girlfriends but you know what I mean. I guess we are enjoying our bachelor life. We don’t want the fun to end. Timothy has his own clothing business in Surulere. Moses works in an office where they sell and repair computers. And me? Don’t worry; you will get the gist later. It was around four in the evening in the month of February. The weather is cool to my taste. I went for a swim near the shore and as I was coming out from the water, I saw her…… Our eyes met instantly and I felt that electricity all over me. She was relaxing under the evening sun with just bra and bikini. Her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders down her tanned skin. Just looking at her almost made me to fall back inside the water. I have never seen a girl as beautiful and angelic as her. She was fair with eyes that made her look so gorgeous and delicious…. I came out of the water, still looking at her. “Omo, this beauty no be from this Lekki ooo,” said Timothy. “Martin, what are you waiting for?Go for it,” Moses said as he urged me. I looked at him. “Yes, you made it obvious; you have been staring at her like you are in a trance,” Moses added. Must you spell it out? I said in my mind. “But seriously, she’s hot. Look at her waist. Kim Kardashian,” Timothy added with his new slang. His eyes were on her. In fact all eyes in the beach were on her. Omo, I have to take action before someone else does. This sun was fading slowly. I put on my red polo as I started walking towards the object of my attraction. Omo, my confidence has gone; I don’t even know what to say when I meet her.I struggled to walk as a feeling of shyness swept over me. I wobbled over the peach of sand and almost fell down in front of her. I gained my balance immediately, then our eyes met again and I couldn’t speak. I was just there, staring at her. It was as if the daze of her beauty put me in a trance. She looked curiously polite at me with loving eyes, and I felt weak. Then she broke the awkward silence. “Hi, are you a tourist guide or are you lost?” Omo see jamb question. As a correct guy, I smiled and replied, “No, I do come here often to loosen up. The sun is fading, I felt like I will be able to see the beauty of the sunset as it reflects over the scenery better from your side. I hope you don’t mind.” “Not at all. It’s true, it's lovely to watch it from here,” she said as her smile melted my heart. “I am Samantha Menziwa from South Africa and you are-” Omo, see class. “I am Christopher Ayodele. My friends call me Chris.” To be continued....

Episode Two “Lovely name,” I said. “Thanks.” She smiled as she opened her lips slightly. I swear she has open teeth. “What brought a beauty like you to our country?” I asked. Suddenly she looked down. I noticed sadness in her eyes. It was quickly replaced with a smile. “Work.” That was all she said. Then there was silence. Chai. I hate this kind of situation. I call it hostage situation because I am holding my voice hostage. Before I could speak again, she said, “The Company I’m working with, a telecommunication company, we came here for a conference.”. “I see.” “Where do you work?” she asked. I was taken aback by the question, “Me?” She nodded. “I work with a consulting firm.” Then we relaxed and started small talk. After ten minutes, she excused herself and I returned to where my friends were staying, waiting for me. “Spill it out boy,” said Moses. The guy is so annoying. “She gave me her number We set up a date tomorrow evening at KFC.” I said with a huge grin on my face. “KFC? You mean you want to take the girl to a football club?” asked Timothy. He was definitely confused. “Jeez. Guy,are you dumb? You don’t know KFC?” Moses asked as he cast a puzzled look at Timothy. “It’s a restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken wow That’s the full name.” I said. I guess I just saved the day. “Which one in particular Chris,” asked Moses. “Actually, she is staying at Paradise Towers. So we agreed on the one in Banana Island.” “Banana Island!” Both of exclaimed. “This girl will chop you mugu,” said Moses. Annoying. He just wanted to make a fun of me. So let me jerk him up a bit. “I don’t care. Right now, I need a girl who knows how to chop money.” I said. He was quiet. We went to a nearby cafeteria and bought some cheese burgers. We promised to communicate and meet again soon. We dispersed. I can’t wait to see Samantha again.

Episode 3 nd 4 Episode 3 The next day, I drove my Bentley to Banana Island. I drove past theModupe Alakija Crescent and soon I was cruising through the 1st Avenue. Situated in Ikoyi, the island is known for its wealthy, multi-cultural community and has some of the most expensive real estate in Nigeria. This beautiful island has become the preferred abode of the rich. A first time visitor is greeted by the sight of well laid lawns, beautiful towers and well paved roads. Beautiful trees were planted in canopy form to serve as umbrella and supply fresh air. Surprisingly it’s an artificial Island. Lagos state government has been sand-filling these parts of the ocean. Bar beaches in Lagos are no longer what they used to be. You know what I think? Just because some people have loads of money doesn’t mean they should fill the ocean with sand and build houses on it. I see it as a dare on nature. Na demsabi. Soon, I have reached the 2nd Avenue. I approached the cozy restaurant and parked my car in the VIP section. It was 7pm. I entered, sat down and waited. Samantha came ten minutes later. All eyes were on her. When she sat down, we ordered red wine and fried chicken. She doesn’t want to eat food and me too. We entered into a lovely conversation. She is 26 and she resides in Pretoria. Her first name is Busisiwe which means blessed. Soon she was telling me all about her life. As she was talking about her family, her carefully crafted exterior began to crack. Suddenly she began to cry. I was surprised. I brought my white Versace handkerchief. “Take this.” “Thank you,” she said as she collected it and wiped away her tears. Now to the one million dollar question. “What is it my dear?” She kept quiet. I felt I am prying into something that doesn’t concern me. I don’t want her to think that I am poking too much into her personal life. “My apologies dear. Sorry for asking the question.” “No nono,” she said as she made a motion with her hands. I nodded but kept quiet. “Actually, it wasn’t work that brought me here,” she said. Omo see confession. Now I have to thread carefully.
Episode 4 I waited for her to speak. “I ran away,” she finally said. What? I asked in my mind but kept quiet. I took a little sip from the glass of wine. Being impatient, I asked, “Why dear? What happened?” She has stopped crying. I guess she has now found the courage to talk to me. Perhaps my status has changed from that of a complete stranger to a friend. “My parents…” She said. Her voice was cracking. I was bracing myself for the worst. Oh my God! An accident? Her voice interrupted my thoughts, “They are forcing me to marry someone that I detest,” she said as new tears began to fall down. I was quite surprised by what she said. I was now deeply concerned for her. “Why will they do that my dear? And who is the guy?” Too much questions but I can’t help myself. “He is a policeman. My parents made some kind of arrangement that I don’t know about in the past with his parents.” “I hate policemen,” I said. “Exactly. The guy is such a nice guy. So boring with a big potbelly and he snores. I can’t live with that kind of person for the rest of my life,” she said, still in tears. “Calm down my dear. You won’t. I totally agree with you. Your parents have no reason to force you to marry someone you detest. You are the one that will endure it all, not them. Don’t over- think it dear, everything will eventually fall into place,” I assured her. She nodded. “What made you to come here? Do you know anyone here before?” “Yes. When I was a child, I used to come here for vacation with my parents. I love Lagos, the food and I have made quite a lot of friends here as well,” She said as a smile appeared back on her face. That explains it then. We slide back into a normal conversation. The more we talk, the more I stare at her. I just love the way she smiles, how lovely she looks. She is so passionate; so alluring. We set another date to meet up at a night club in Lekki the next day. When I went back to my apartment in Lekki, I couldn’t stop thinking about her and now I think I’m beginning to develop this feeling for her….and…I am just confused. The whole thing made me feel so vulnerable. I am used to being in control but now I have this conflict of emotions that made me feel like am losing it. Samantha…. Should I believe that meeting her was the best decision of my life? Or that this is something that I going to very much regret?

Episode 5 “She lied?” Both asked and Timothy asked. I called both of them over to my place the next day. It was a Saturday Morning and the sun has just started shinning. “Not really. If I were in her shoes, I can’t just begin to open up to someone I was just meeting for the first time,” “Don’t paint it Chris,” said Timothy. “You can’t trust girls these days. Even my girl does that. She tells me one thing today, she tells me another thing tomorrow,” Moses said as he made a motion with his hand. “Moses, you mean that your on and off girlfriend?” asked Timothy. “We do have issues now and then. Sometimes she can be a complaining bitch, but kai, she is still special to me.” Moses said I was just looking at them. We are all sitting down in the sitting room. I prepared tea and soon we began to eat tea and bread. Timothy faced me and said, “Chris you didn’t ask Samantha why she lied the first time?” This guy is a pain in the ass. “Please I don’t want to discuss about my relationship.” The words just flew out of my mouth before I realized what I just said. “Your relationship!” Both of them exclaimed. I kept quiet as I gave them the James Bond stare. “Wonders shall never end,” said Moses as he laughed so loud. “A girl you just met few days ago, you are already talking about relationship.” “But guy, you are 30. At this age, we shouldn’t be talking about relationship. How many relationships have you had since you were 18? More than five. We should be talking about marriage. If you see the right girl for you, you should go ahead and marry her,” said Timothy. “Tim, you have a point,” I said. The whole thing just made me begin to think about Samantha; her openness, her simplicity, her smile. Everything about her just makes me feel like she is the…. “Talking about marriage, I just feel it was designed to keep a man down. You will just be tied down to one woman only. No more fun. No one adventure,” Moses interjected as he interrupted me in my thoughts. I gave Moses a hard stare. “What do you think Tim?” Moses asked. “I think a man changes immediately he gets married. Marriage doesn’t just work well for some men. Go round this vicinity and see what marriage have done to some guys. If they tell you how they were doing before they got married, you won’t believe it,” said Timothy. All eyes were on me to say my mind. “I think marriage can either be the worst thing that can happen to a man or the best thing that can happen to him. If a man is lucky and he finds the right woman, when he is financially and psychologically ready for marriage, he can go ahead and marry. It will be the best thing that will happen to him.” I said. “Hmmm,” said Moses. I gave him the ‘What?’ Look. “Chris, about Samantha. Is it love or lust? Is she the one?” Timothy asked as they both looked at me. That’s the one billion naira question. I have been trying to sort out my feelings since last night. After making mistake with five girls, I don’t want this one to be something I will regret. I have always rushed into relationships and ended up either breaking hearts or got my heart broken. I have to take it slow and follow my heart and see where it leads me. I have this feeling deep inside me that I have finally seen the girl that I have been searching for. I kept the thought to myself. “It’s definitely not lust. This one, I am certain. She is not one of those girls that you see and you want to rush for a one night stand. She…is… different.” I said. They all kept quiet. We discussed football, played Connect by Phyno and talked about the Nigerian music industry. They later left in around 12 in the afternoon. Moses wanted to do some cleaning at his house and Tim wanted to go to market. This rest of the day was like a blur. Time moved so slow and finally grinded to a halt. It’s finally 6:30 and I am meeting with Samantha by 7. I dressed up in white polo and blue jeans and tied up the laces of my white canvas. I entered my Bentley and pushed through the busy streets. I like Lekki better at night. It was a cacophony of beautiful people, cozy hotels, restaurants and flooding street lights. As I drove, I could hear Skelewu song in the background. I saw some couples lingering around the sidewalks, children playing around and guys hanging around with their girls around the joints. Soon I reached my destination. I parked my car outside and began to approach the entrance of Club Vegas. to be continued.

Episode 6 I entered inside club Vegas and my eyes were arrested by neon lights. There were people everywhere. The red and blue lights gave the looming darkness outside these soft, bright edges. Omo see crowd. It was a Saturday evening at Lekki. The city is on fire and that’s how I like it. Skelewu music was playing as I entered and went straight to the bar and collected a glass of wine. Omo, the organizers of the club even brought DJ Exclusive to throttle up the music. I waited for her. I looked at my watch, it was now 7:3opm. Then I saw her. She was wearing a sleeveless red top and jean trousers so tight that you can clearly see the curves. She saw me and started coming towards me. She was with two guys. “You came,” I said, my smile showing how delighted I am to see her. I hugged her briefly. “These are my friends, Charles and Nelson. They are brothers. I am staying with their family,” she said. She then gestured with her hands, “Guys, this is my new friend Chris. He is the guy I was telling you about,” She introduced. I felt she was talking more to Nelson. She was telling them about me? I was curious. I intend to find out the details later. Both brothers almost looked alike. Both of them were plump and of average height. I can smell money. Both were dark in complexion. I figured Nelson is older than his brother Charles. “It’s nice to meet you guys.” I greeted as I shook hands with them. We all exchanged more pleasantries and they left us alone. Then I faced Samantha. I held her waist. I was just staring at her. Her face sparkles against her colourful eyes. She was looking at me, her beautiful eyes trying to pierce my mind, to figure out what was in my mind. “You are beautiful,” I said out loud over the music. Her smile widened. “Thanks. You are not looking bad either,” she said. “Really?” “Yes.” I smiled. I brought out my hand and she brought out hers. I intertwined her fingers with mine. I let her to the dance floor. No verbal communication but we were communicating. I felt this connection made me believe we understand each other. DJ Exclusive switched to Personally by Psquare and the crowded roared in agreement. I held her waist and began to dance, getting lost in the music. There were people everywhere; bodies grinding, rocking, moving. I don’t care. I treasured the moment. “Badass,” the voice was so familiar. I stopped dancing and turned around.

Episode 7 I turned around and was surprised to see my two friends. Each had a plus one by their side. I shook hands with them, and turned to Samantha, “My dear, meet my friends, Tim and Moses.” A smile lit up her face. Tim shook hands with her but Moses went and gave her a hug. Moses introduced me to his girl Jennifer and Tim introduced me to his girl, Sheila. The whole evening was getting interesting. I gave both of them the surprised look. “Home was boring, nothing to do. I had this wonderful idea, so I called Tim and fixed it up,” said Moses. “It’s nice meeting all of you once again.” I greeted the ladies and they dispersed into different sections of the dancefloor. “You have nice friends,” Samantha whispered in my ears. I smiled and said, “They can be annoying sometimes.” “I am not much of a social person. I tend to stay much on my own,” said Samantha. “Why?” I asked her. “I guess it’s from the way I was brought up. We were discouraged to make friends and I was very shy at school” “How many are you in the family?” “Three, me and my two brothers. Both of them are married now.” “Nice combination,” I said. She gave me a disbelieving look and then smiled. “Baby I love your ass, dance with me,” said an unfamiliar voice. I looked and saw one huge guy, dragging her away from me. “No! Please, can’t you see I’m with someone?” Samantha was saying. Everything was happening fast. “My name is Abuchi. What’s your name sexy lady?” He was still holding her left hand, not minding that she was with me. All these guys that feel that they can get whatever they want. “Leave me alone please.” I was boiling in anger. I faced the guy, “Abuchi or whatever you call yourself, why don’t you respect yourself and leave her alone?” The guy noticed the hostility in my voice and laughed. He looked beside him and two guys came to his side. I was not surprised. Here in Lekki, the local guys can be quite annoying. They believe they can do anything they want. It was dark, a dangerous time of the day and it suits them. “Not so fast smart guy,” said Moses. I was surprised. They approached me and stood by my side. Timothy was with a bottle of Hero drink and Moses was with a bottle of gulder. “Guy step aside,” Moses warned. His six feet frame was intimidating. “And what will you do mama’s boy?” said the guy. That was it. He has gotten on Moses’ nerve. Moses immediately struck his bottle on the ground and it broke into two, there was commotion everywhere. Guys came closer to observe what is happening. Here in Lekki, nobody stops fights at clubs like this. They just come out and watch it unfold. “If you don’t leave this guy and step aside by the count of three, both of us will be wounded this night,”Moses said as he pointed the broken bottle to the guy’s face. His voice has a tone of finality The friends of the Abuchi guy approached him and whispered some words into his ear. He released his grip on Samantha and held up his hands. “Take it easy guy. It’s just a harmless flirt.” One of his friends approached us and said “Sorry guys, he had drank a little too much this night,” “I apologize on his behalf,” the second one said to Samantha. They dragged their friend away and were lost in the crowd. “Thank you guys” I said as I shook hands with Tim and Moses. “Don’t mention, what are friends for?” said Tim. “The guy’s a bitch,” said Moses. Then they left. I held Samantha by the hands, “Sorry for what just happened.” “Most Nigerian guys are arrogant,” she said with her SouthAfrican accent. “You are not wrong dear,” I said. All eyes were on us. I noticed she is now feeling uncomfortable.

Episode 8 I looked into her eyes and whispered in her ears,”You wanna go someplace?" Her face lit up, “Where?” “A street away.” “Okay.” I took her hands and led her out of Club Vegas. The one story concrete construction looked ugly at daylight. At night, it sparkles under the moonlights. We climbed the steps at the outer part of the building. We reached the top, and sat down at the solid concrete barrier. Tiny cars streaked past in an endless drone. Sirens and faint scream of laughter punctuated the activity. Everything was buzzing. Everything was alive. “This is beautiful,” said Samantha. “Yes it is,” I said. “I mean this moment,” she said as she looked at me; her eyes, so beautiful. Suddenly, she looked down. It was so fast a reaction. “What is on your mind dear?” I asked her. She waited for a moment before she said, “Everything.” I was quiet. I gave her time. “Before we met, I was depressed. Everything happening in my life has been so wrong. Nothing was turning out the way I expected. I felt I should just end it all. My life sucks.” Concerned, I intertwined my fingers with hers. She appears so perfect outside. What will be bothering a girl like this? I looked into her hands. “Your life doesn’t suck my dear. You are beautiful; you are a good person.” “You don’t know anything about me,” she said and looked away. I held her face with both my hands and brought it back. “I can see it, I can feel it,” I said. She was gazing at me, trying to understand something. Instantly tears began to drop from her eyes, “They said that I’m not good enough,” she said, her voice breaking down. Her words touched me like fire. “Who told you dear? No one has the right to make you feel you are not good enough?” “All my life, I wanted to be a model. When I graduated from the University at Johannesburg, I went to a modeling agency there and they said I’m not good enough.” Oh! I brought out my white handkerchief and wiped her tears. “And Zithembe too.” “Who is Zithembe?” “My fiancé. The one they are forcing me to marry. We are from the same Zulu tribe.” “What did he say?” “He always tells me that I was a failure. That I am ugly and not good enough for him.” Her words were like hot water. I felt like if I see that guy right there, I will just punch his face. “Why does he still want to marry you then?” “Because I was betrothed to him at an early age. It’s this tradition at our side.” “And your parents, do they know about how the guy has been treating you?” “Yes, I used to tell them but they don’t care. My father will just shout at me and tell me not to tell anyone. My mum cares a little but she is afraid of my father. She is always quiet in the house. She doesn’t say her feeling. The whole thing pains her but there is nothing she can do.” I was shocked. What a family. I found myself caring more and more about her. Tears dropped from my eyes. She noticed it and rested her head on my shoulders. Then I remembered what she said earlier, I said into her ears, “You said before you met me. What has changed from then till now?” She raised her head she gave me that look again. “A lot.I felt this peace of mind that I haven’t felt for a long time in my life. I am happy right now. I love this moment and I feel like it shouldn’t end.” I was lost of words. I felt that electricity all over me. All the emotions I have been locking at the far side of my mind came rushing back up. I tilted my head, slowly, cautiously and leaned forward, pressing my mouth on hers. Her lips parted and we started kissing fiercely like wehave been waiting for this moment. Her lips trembles on mine. She put her hands on my head. I kissed her harder, driving my lips inside her mouth. I held her waist with my hands. Our kiss was so passionate. We couldn’t get enough of each other.I felt that connection. I felt so close to her. The realization that we have both crossed a big boundary overwhelmed me.

Episode 9 Suddenly rain started falling and we both parted our lips. We were breathing so fast. She smiled at me. We looked at the sky and we started laughing, this happy laugh. I led her out of the building. As we were approaching where I parked my Bentley, she called Nelson and the two brothers came five minutes later. They parked their own Sienna nearby. It was hard for us to say goodbye. “Till next time,” I said. “Till next time,” she said. I watched as she entered the car and they faded away. I entered my Bentley and drove quietly to my house. I reached my flat, changed my nightgown. I looked at the time; it was 10:49pm. Time flies indeed. I looked around my room. I felt so lonely. This is a moment in a bachelor’s life that he detests. I lay down on the bed but I couldn’t sleep. My mind was playing movie after movie of Samantha. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. She must have slept by now. “Hello,” A soft voice came over the other side of the line. I was wrong. “Hi,” was what I said. “Hi,” she said. We were just there, loving the moment. I could her breathing. I felt so peaceful. “I just called to say goodnight,” I said. “Sleep all the way. Sweet dreams.” She said. Her voice was quiet. I heard a sound. I felt she wanted to say something. I waited. Maybe not. No one wanted to end the call. I guess I have to pull the plug. “Sweet dreams.” I ended the call and slept. No interruption. It was a long wonderful sleep. I woke up by 7 in the morning. I had a dream but couldn’t remember what it was about. I went to the kitchen, brushed up and put the kettle on top of the gas cooker. I took bread and egg with a little stew. I took my bath and started putting on my clothes for work. Suddenly the ringtone from my Blackberry shattered the quietness of the morning. I picked it up. “It’s me,” said the soft voice at the other end of the line. Samantha. It was the first time she is calling me on phone. “Good morning dear. How was your night?” “Beautiful,” I noticed some hesitation in her voice. Suddenly her voice began to quiver. Is she crying? Why? “What happened dear?” “They just called me this morning?” she said. I felt something is very wrong. “Who called you? What is the problem dear? Tell me.” “It’s my father. He is in the hospital. My Elder brother Paul told me this morning.” “Oh!” “I have to go back Chris.” “When will you be leaving?” “This morning.” Shit. I felt so helpless. “Okay. Okay. I will meet you at the airport.” “Please do,” her voice was intense.

Episode 10 Murtala Mohammed airport was crowded with a lot of people. It was a Monday morning, the busiest day in the week. That explains the huge traffic. Before coming to the airport, I had first reported at work. I told my co-worker Elizabeth to hold things at bay for me until I come back. Approaching the airport, I looked around but didn’t see her. “All passengers should stand in line for identification please,” A voice from a huge speaker announced. I walked around, there were people everywhere. Suddenly my phone started pinging out blue light. ‘Look up ahead’ It was a message. Samantha. I looked up and saw her with Nelson and his brother. She was waving at me frantically. A lot of emotions washed over me. She was at the Virgin Nigeria Airline desk. I started walking fast. She rushed to my side and gave me a tight hug. I carried her up and brought her down. I greeted the two brothers and then faced her. “I’m glad that you came,” She said, her face was filled with tearful smile. “I had to come,” I said quietly, feeling the sadness of it all. She looked at my face and then looked down quickly. Whenever she does like that, I know there is something she wanted to say. Samantha feels shy around me sometimes. I held her face up with both my hands. “You want to say something.” She looked deeply inside my eyes and then said, “I was afraid you wouldn’t come.” Her words struck me deeply. Tears wanted to fall. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” I said and hugged her tight. We were just there looking at each other. Time was flying so fast. Nelson informed her that she is needed at passport control. There were a lot of words left unsaid. She has to go and we both know it. Is this the final goodbye? I don’t really know what tomorrow will bring. She leaned closer to my face and placed her lips on mine. It was a hard kiss; the most painful way to say goodbye. “Don’t forget us. Don’t forget me,” she said as the brothers pulled her away from my grasp. Her words haunted me. I was quite surprised that she believed that there is an US. I was confused. What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to say when I feel like my heart is ripped out of me? I watched as she passed through Passport and Customs control. Then she entered the booing 747 Virgin Nigeria aircraft. I stood there as the plane made it through the runway and suddenly, it was a dot in the sky.

Episode 11 I drove my Bentley silently back to work. I work at Greenhill Consulting Firm. The huge company building is situated an Adeola Odeku street in Victoria Island. All through my life, I have wanted to work in a consulting firm. I love solving problems and finding new ways of doing things. When I finished at University of Lagos where I studied computer science, after my service year, I went for my Masters and got my MSc. in Human Resource Management. At Green Hill, we help businesses improve their performance and grow by solving problems and finding better ways of doing things. We help both Private and public sector organizations to develop their services and where necessary, reduce costs and make savings. I came out of my car and entered the three story building and went straight to the IT sector. We have a lot of sectors, Marketing, Finance and so on. I work in the Information Technology Sector. “Lizzy; any news from the Mtech guy?” I asked my co-worker Elizabeth as I sat down in front of my desk. Elizabeth is a dark girl of average height, modest appearance, and bookish face. She is always with her eyeglasses. “Yes, his team rejected our Algorithm.” “Why? We worked on that Algorithm for over 8 hours.” “They said the specifications doesn't fit. Their team leader told them to get back to us. Chris we have go through the whole process again,” She said with a sigh. Oh. Work Work. Is it necessary? We have been working with the Phcncompany in Lagos metropolis, we are helping them with their bill payment problems. Customers have been complaining about recent fluctuations in their meter. I was quiet for almost an hour. A lot of things on my mind. I worked silently with Lizzy. Normally, whenever we are working, we do make small talk. But not today. She noticed it and asked,“Is everything alright Chris?” “Yes of course. Why wouldn’t they be?” I faced her. “You didn’t even notice that I have done a new hair,” she said. Lizzy is intelligent, an IT geek. I like her but that’s just it. She is always making these furtive glances, gestures; always wanting me to notice her. I kept quiet. “Remember that today is our night,” she said. She always wants us to go out for dinner but I have always rejected her proposals politely. “What?” I asked. “You have forgotten again. You always do that.” “Do what?” “Why are you acting rude this morning,” she asked. No matter how hard I try, she doesn’t get annoyed. I focused on my laptop and started drawing up another design on Corel draw. “I don’t get it. You don’t have any girlfriend that I know of.”she gave me a confused stare. I have to end this now. “No offense Lizzy but you are not my type,” I said. I just hope I wasn’t too harsh on her. The whole day moved so slowly. We finished working on the algorithm by 8pm and gave it to the Mtech guy. I was so tired. I sauntered down the steps and drove straight to home. I haven’t heard from Samantha. She must have reached Pretoria since noon. I went out to a restaurant and ate quietly. I didn’t want to call anyone. I just needed to be alone. I went home and climbed the steps to my flat like a drunkard. I brought out my keys, opened my door and went straight to my bed and sat down. I began to think about my life. Since I started work three years ago, I have been so focused on my career that I didn’t want to focus on anything else. I have always rejected female attention. Then I haven’t seen any woman that can fit in into my life. Nothing else felt right to me. Even my Parents have been complaining that I haven’t been reaching out to them. My mother has been worried that she hasn’t seen a woman by my side yet. My father complained that I have shunned all talks of marriage. I am from Osun state and that’s where my parents are staying too. Both of them are retired government workers. I kept them happy by always sending money home but I felt they needed something that I can’t give them yet. We are four in the family. My elder brother and my two sisters have all married. I always give the excuse that it’s because I am the last born. Everything changed when I met Samantha. She opened up a space in my heart that I didn’t know existed. Now my heart is arching. Now I know she is the one. But she is so far, out of my reach. I slept with all thoughts of her in my mind.

Episode 12 I woke up so late. It was already 8 in the morning. I was late for work. I guess the whole magical weekend I had last week has disappeared, leaving me with a boring week. At work, I couldn’t focus on anything. I haven’t heard from Samantha. No call. No message. I can’t blame her though. Her father is in the hospital and she has an irritating fiancé. Sometimes I feel her pain; I didn’t know what is happening over there. I don’t want to call her. I don’t want to look like I’m disturbing her. I may be a distraction to her. She needs to focus and attend to her sick father. Maybe she has forgotten me. She was all I was thinking about. After work, I got a call from Timothy. He invited me and Moses to his house. Feeling bored and frustrated and with nothing to do, I drove downtown to Ikoyi, where Tim is staying. The huge evening Lagos traffic turned a 10 minutes cruise into a one hour journey. “Chris, what took you so long?” Moses asked me as I sat down on the soft sofa in the living room. I told them all that had happened. “You mean she’s gone?” asked Timothy. “I don’t know what to think or what to believe.” “Guy, I don’t think she will call. She has gone back to her country. She has woken up. You have to wake up too dude,” said Moses. This guy sef.His attitude is annoying. “Guy, we have a lot of hot chicks in this town. You are looking so down and lonely. We can arrange one for you.” Tim said with a look of concern. “Don’t. I don’t need any hot chick.” “Then what do you want?” Moses asked. “Mos, take it easy on him. The guy is grieving. Soon he will go through the acceptance stage and we will get our friend back,” Tim said. He was smiling as he patted me on the shoulder. Tim brought Gulder drinks. They collected one each. Tim offered me one, I rejected. I picked up the bottled water at the table and downed it in less than a minute. It was all boring talk to me after that. I sat there for the next one hour going through the motions. I went back to my house around 8. For three days I didn’t hear from Samantha. I felt like I should call her but I didn’t know the number she will be using out there. It is 10th February and I feel like this year’s valentine will be my worst of them all. I have never celebrated valentine day with anyone special anyway. It is Wednesday morning on the 10th . I was brushing my teeth. I don’t want to go to work late again. Suddenly my phone jangled beside the sink where I placed it. Who is calling me at this time of the day? I looked at the number, I didn’t recognize it. I picked the called anyway. “Hello,” I said. “It’s me.” The voice was very low and soft. Samantha. I recognized it at once and all the emotions that I have suffered so much to bury deep inside my heart came rushing up. Samantha.

Episode 13 I was quiet. My heart was beating fast. I could hear the sound of her breathing. I was feeling a lot of emotions. “It’s been like a year since I have heard your voice,” I said. “That makes the two of us.” There was this silence again. I wasn’t ready to say how happy I am to hear from her again. “It’s been difficult,” she said. “What? Why?” I asked. “Now I miss you more and it’s very painful especially now that we are two countries apart,” Her words always get to me. They are so deep and they touch my heart in a way nothing else ever does. I finally opened up, “My dear, it’s been like hell since you’ve gone. You never left my mind. I thought you have forgotten me.” I said quietly. Still holding the phone close to my ear, I went and sat down on chair beside the sink. “How can I forget you when you are all I have been thinking about,” she said. Her voice was sounded like she was about to cry. She is so passionate and lovely. I almost wept. “How is your father?” “He has recovered.” “Thank God.” “There is something he told me,” she added. “What did he tell you?” I asked. I wonder why she will want to share a family affair with me. “I will tell you, but not on phone,” she said. “It’s something that concerns me?” I asked. “You need to know,” she said. “Dear, don’t hold out on me and when will I see you again?” I asked her. “My dear, I have one request to ask of you,” she said. I wonder what she will be asking of me. “Go on dear.” I said. “Can you come?” she asked. I can feel like she wants to cry. She is all emotional around me Come where? This is a huge request. I thought. “Come where?” I asked. She was quiet. “Where, my dear?” Suddenly she began to cry. I could hear the sound of her sobbing. I know what she meant by her question and maybe, she knows that I know but feigned ignorant. It makes me look like I don’t care. Chai. I have spoiled it. “I’m sorry Samantha. Please forgive me. I missed you so much.” I said. She was quiet. I know she can hear me. I felt our mind is connected, she is waiting for me to say it. “You want me to come to South Africa? Pretoria?” “Yes,” was all she said. “I need to see you,” she added. My mind was troubled. What should I do? I never thought of that. “My dear, it’s not that easy. The only thing that takes me out of Nigeria is work. We mostly travel out to work for our clients.” I paused. “How about your fiancé -the policeman? I don’t want to make things difficult for you.” “I will tell you everything when you come.” She was defiant. She already had this belief that I will come. We discussed about other things. She laughed at something I said. Just hearing the sound of her laugh made me to smile for the first time in days. We ended the call after ten minutes. She was called by someone. As for me, I was already late to the office. The whole request of a thing worried me as I drove down to work. We normally travel around this time but I don’t know about this year. The nature of our work is always unpredictable. When I reached my desk, I was surprised to see Lizzy standing akimbo waiting for me. Haba! What again? “You are late again.” I said nothing. I gave her the what-look. “If there is something you want to say, say it. Any news?” I asked. “One good news and one bad news.” She said. I was worried immediately. “Tell me the good one first.” “The Mtech guy thanked us on our work for his team. It was finally accepted,” she said. “And the bad news?” “You are wanted by Eddie. He said you should see him at his office immediately you come to work this morning,” she said. She made it sound like I’m a wanted man. Oh my God! What have I done? Is it the series of lateness? Eddie is the director at our IT section. And he is someone that all the employees dread meeting. When he calls you to see him in his office, it’s either you will be sacked or he will warn you to improve on your performance. This is definitely a bad news.

Episode 14 I tried so hard to see Eddie. Every time I went, his secretary will tell me that he was in a meeting. I was not able to see him throughout the day. At the evening, I went back to my house. With nothing to do, I called down my friends to come and watch football match with me. We clicked through the Super-sports stations but the whole matches they were showing were boring. I clicked on African Magic. “Kai. I don’t like Mercy Johnson anymore. She is getting fatter now,” said Moses. I cooked Jellof rice. Tim ate a spoonful and said, “Must you like her? She is making her money while you are here complaining.” “The movie is boring.” I said with food still in my mouth. “Guy must you talk when you are eating?” asked Moses I looked at him. “I noticed that you are still suffering from the love bite.” Moses added. I kept quiet before I said. “She called.” “She called?” Both of them asked at once with a lot of surprise on their face. “Yes and she wants me to come and see her,” I said. “Guy, forget that girl. In fact, there is this girl…” said Moses. Tim cut him off, “Dude, that girl is serious about you ooo.” Tim said and faced Moses. “Mos, Why can't you respect yourself for once?” “I thought the whole charade have come to an end,” said Moses. “What’s your problem Mos? Is it that you hate the girl?” asked Tim. “I don’t hate her,” said Moses. “Then what?” Moses remained silent. I was just there, watching them. “Guy, what are you going to do?” asked Tim. “Seriously I don’t know.” “Work won’t allow me.” I added. “Talking about Valentine’s day, let’s go with our babes to Tinapa. I heard Don jazzy and his Mavins crew will be performing there on that day,” said Tim. “Hmm. My girl will love that,” said Moses with smile on his face. They both turned and looked at me. I didn’t say anything. Moses knows that he has annoyed me this evening, so he kept quiet. After 30 minutes, they bade me farewell, and I was all alone thinking of what tomorrow will bring. I planned to call Samantha in the morning. I have been delaying because I don’t know what to tell her. I have actually been to Johannesburg twice but never to her area. It has always been work that takes me out. I haven’t had any reason to go out to any country lately. Apart from friends I have around, there is nothing interesting to do outside. Maybe it’s because there hasn’t been any woman in my life since. But now what? I don’t know what to think but I know that now Samantha is in the picture, it changes everything. I slept with the whole thought of her in my mind. At night, I dreamt that I finally went to see Eddie in his office and he gave me a sack letter. The next day, I woke up with the dread of meeting Eddie in my mind. I will go to his office to see him this morning and I am afraid that today will be a terrible day but I pushed my fears out of my mind as I drove to work.

Episode 15 When I reached my desk, I dropped my bag and went to Eddie’s office. I met with his secretary and she motioned me to enter. “Good morning Sir. I heard you wanted to see me.” I said when I entered inside the vast office. It was expensively furnished. I stood there waiting for him to say something. He was just busy going through some files. That heightened the level of my anxiety. Eddie is short fat man in his fifties who believes that life has been wicked to him. He is dark in complexion. He specializes in inflicting psychological pain on the workers. All of us are afraid of him. He removed his big reading glasses and looked up, “Maigida, why are you standing there? Did you wake up from the wrong side of the bed?” I didn’t know how to answer the question. He always addresses me with that name and I hate it. Maigida is actually an Hausa word which means master. I think he is using that name to taunt me. “Do you came here to mock me? You don’t want to sit down?” He asked. “I do Sir.” I replied and sat down on the chair in front of the huge desk facing him. He has this villainous look. He opened the file he was reading and brought out an envelope. Shit. The sack letter? Is this how this ends? “Something has come up Chris.” “I am at your service Sir.” He looked at me and smiled; his trademark wicked smile. He quickly perused through the file and said, “We’ve got two contracts.” I don’t know where this is heading. I nodded. “One is from Mtn, the other one is from a public corporation.” “I’m listening Sir.” “We have arranged two different teams. One of the teams will head to Accra tomorrow. They will work with the ministry of education there. It’s just a two days job. They will finish and come back before weekend.” I was relieved but was worried. He wants to send us out again. Not this weekend! “…their main office in South Africa.” Eddie was saying. My mind was far. Then I heard it and looked up. “What? You were saying?” “The second team will work with the main Mtn office in South Africa. Due to the nature of the job, they will stay in SA for one week.” I was excited. South Africa! I nodded. I didn’t want Eddie to notice my reaction. “Maigida, I know this weekend is Valentine and all, but this a sacrifice you need to make for the Firm. Which team will you want to be included in?” He asked. I considered it and said, “Sir, I will appreciate it if you include me in the team heading for Ghana. I have plans this weekend with my girl Titi. I will work and come back before Sunday.” Eddie looked at me and laughed. “Maigida, if this can be of any consolation, love is an illusion. It was created by women to keep us under their feet. It’s fools that believe in love.” Eddie hates women. He uses half of his salary to pay alimony to his two ex-wives. Last year, he refused to marry again, but the management told him that his job requirement needs it. They want a married man as the section director so he can relate better with clients blablabla. That was how he married again. “Sir I don’t want to disappoint her again.” I know I am taking a big risk. Eddie is a sadist, arrogant and pompous. He hates it when people are happy. He is happy when you are in pain. If he knows that you want a particular choice, he will make sure you get a different one. He looked at me with his piercing eyes. His big flat nose was all I could see. “Maigida, you don’t have to be selfish. Work comes first. The South African Mtn contract is more important. You know that Mtn is one of our traditional clients. If you want, you can give me your girlfriend’s number, I will apologize on your behalf. Titi right?” He asked. “Yes Sir.” He gave me the envelope. “Go through whatever is inside this and get ready for the journey. We are going to work with the Mtn main office at Johannesburg. We are helping them to develop a new prepaid plan for what they referred to as ‘The season of love Special.’ To me, the whole thing about season of love is bullshit. We are professionals; we care about the money, so we remove our feelings out of it.” He said. “Right?” he asked. “Yes sir. We are leaving tomorrow. Get out.” I left with the white envelope. I have to keep calm, if not, things will spoil. If I have a girl in the country, this news will be like a bomb because it will spoil whatever commitment I would have set up with her for the weekend. Most of my fellow workers were happily discussing about their valentine plans as I collected my bag and walked out of the building. It would have been a bad news for every other employee in Green Hill. In fact, Eddie was happy thinking he has given me a bad news, not knowing that he played directly into my hands.

Episode 16 I collected my small bag and left the building. Now I can actually call Samantha. I can’t describe the joy I felt. The whole thing was unbelievable. I went at a quiet corner, two blocks away and dialed her number. It rang three times before she picked it. “Hello,” I said. “You kept me waiting for like forever but I am so glad you called.” She said as she chuckled. It was a happy laugh. I grinned. I can feel her happiness. “How are you doing dear?” “I am doing fine.” I can still feel some kind of hesitation in her voice. Let me bell the cat. “I’m coming.” I said. She was quiet. Maybe she was processing the information. “Really?” “Yes.” “I can’t believe it. I thought it was impossible. Oh, I’m so happy. So I have to start expecting you. So what will you like me to offer you? I will definitely have to cook our tribal…” “Samantha wait.” She was so overjoyed. I had to cut her off. “We will work with Mtn for some days. I won’t come to your side right away. It’s work that is bringing me.” “Whatever,” she said. I don’t know what she meant by that. “I can’t wait to see youuuuu. Oh my God! You are really coming.” This is the first time I am noticing this side of her. She is so simple. Now her happiness blossoms like flower. “I am doing this for us. I miss you so much dear.” I said. “I…Yes?” I heard her saying. Then the call ended abruptly. I didn’t know what happened at her side. It sounded like someone called her. Was it the Zithembe her fiancé? I don’t just know. I went back inside, throughout the day, I was just in a happy mood. I noticed Lizzy stealing some glances at me. “What?” I asked her. “Nothing,” she said. Girls are sensitive; she must have noticed that there is something else going on that she doesn’t know. That one is not my concern. I spent the rest of the day working with some of our clients. We offered them advice on how to reduce cost. It was a busy day; a good day. I drove back to my house in the evening. Moses called us to come over to his house. He said he has a gist for us. What interesting gist can he possibly have? I went anyway. Surprisingly, he was staying at the same Lekki with me. When I opened the door, Tim was already there. Moses was sitting beside his girl, Jennifer. “Good evening guys.” “Hi dear.” I greeted. The girl excused us and went inside. “Guys, I have a news for you this evening. In fact I don’t know how to say it.” Moses said. He brought Eva wine. Haba, what’s the occasion? This one his girl is even here. I wonder. “Just spill it off Mos,” said Tim. Moses brought out his hands. I noticed a sparkle of something. A ring! “I and my sweetheart, Jennifer, we are officially engaged.” He said with a big smile. I was surprised but happy for him. This guy that said he hates marriage. Was it pressure from family? I hope he doesn’t keep that girl engaged without marrying her for eight years. I kept my thoughts to myself. “Really, congrats Mos. This really calls for celebration,” said Tim. Tim filled a glass with the wine and drank a little. “I’m so happy for you dude. So this means we are already hearing the sound of wedding bells.” I said. “I pray so.” Moses smiled. Jennifer came and joined him. They looked like one happy couple. She raised up her hand. I saw the ring. Perhaps, that was her intention. I smiled at her. “Both of you are perfect for each other,” I said. “I have my own news,” said Tim. We all gazed at him. “It’s about my special valentine plan. I and Sheila will spend our V day at Tinapa along with the celebrities.” “That’s lovely Tim,” I said. Moses faced me at once and said, “Dude, come on. We can arrange a babe for you. Jennifer has a friend you will like, she is adorable. Her name is as sweet as wine; Cynthia.” “Not me Moses.” “Dude when the desirable is not available, the available becomes desirable,” he said. He thought he made a point. I quickly said, “Suck it up Moses. Forget that your economic principle or whatever you call it. It’s outdated thinking and it is meant to deceive you to settle for less.” “No no no. It’s….” I cut him off, “So you tell a graduate that since there is no job, he should resign himself to pushing truck because that’s what is available.” “That’s not the point I want to make,” he said defensively. “I know the point you want to make and you are wrong.” He kept quiet. Tim drained up the rest of his wine. I smiled as I filled the last empty glass on the table with wine. “I will be going to SA. I was told at work today.” I dropped it. Boom! “Really?” Tim asked as he sat up. “I don’t believe it. Is this a joke or what?” asked Moses as he held his girl by her waist with his left hand. “It’s not for you to believe. I came to tell you guys that I will be leaving tomorrow.” “Que sera sera. I know it,” said Tim. “You know what?” asked Moses. “It’s divine providence. It’s destiny. I am happy for you dude,” said Tim. “Tim the poet,” said Moses mockingly. I smiled and said. “Let’s make a toast. “Okay,” said Moses. “On point,” said Tim We filled our glasses with wine and raised it up. “To wealth,” said Tim. “To long life,” said Moses. “To love.” I said silently. We clicked the glasses together and drained it all at once and began to laugh. “Please, everyone should drop their Skype details. We will use it for communication,” said Moses. I and Tim gave Moses our Skype details. “Safe journey dude,” said Moses “Free ride dude,” said Tim. I wished them all the best. By the time I reached my house, it was 10pm. I brought out the envelope, it was all technical stuff. I plan to go through it during flight the next day. I put some of my clothes and necessary stuffs in my small briefcase. I don’t know when I will wake up. I got an SMS on my phone informing us to be at the airport by 8am. Tomorrow will be a day to remember. I didn’t even know when I slept off.

Episode 17 I woke up by 7am. I brushed up and dressed up in white shirt and black jeans. I left my car at the garage and carried just my briefcase. I entered taxi and by 7:30, I was on my way to the Airport. At the Airport, I was surprised to notice that Eddie was a member of our team. We were six in number. The rest of the team members were Dan and Lizzy and two guys from human resources, Martin and David. Eddie booked ticked for us at South African Airways. Their smallest aircraft, the Boeing 737-800 was scheduled to leave by 9am. We started getting ready. By 8:45, we were already inside the plane. Sitting beside me was Eddie. I didn’t know how I ended up sitting with him. I had already sent an SMS to Samantha that I will touch down in SA today. By 9am, the plane has not yet taken off. What the hell? “Ladies and gentlemen, we are waiting for clearance from the Air traffic control tower. We expect to depart in 10 minutes. Thank you for your patience.” A voice from speaker announced. “What kind of delay is this?” asked Eddie. He was glancing through the South African Airways small bulletin. “It may be traffic problem Sir.” I said. “The hell it is.” Seconds turned into minutes. I looked at the time; it was almost 8:09 am. “Ladies and gentlemen, we will be taking off shortly. Please make sure that your seatbelt is securely fastened. Thank you.” I fastened my seat belt and in less than a minute, the plane began to make it through the run way. Soon, we were airborne. A slim man dressed on white shirt and trousers faced us and said, “Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Welcome on board this flight. My name is John and I’m your in-flight service director. Your cabin crew are here to ensure you have an enjoyable flight to Johannesburg this morning. In a few moments, we will be screening a safety video about this aircraft. You’ll also find a briefing card in the seat pocket in front of you. We require that you give us your careful attention. Thank you.” As the whole thing was going on, Eddie was shifting on his seat. “I hate goddamm air travel.” He was panicking as they began to talk about safety measures and what we should do in case there is emergency landing. I raised my eyebrows. So this guy with all these arrogant tough exterior is a baby inside. I smiled. I spent the rest of the hours perusing through the documents in the brown envelop. I noted some information. I tried to sleep but couldn’t. I looked back and saw Lizzy chatting with Dan. I put back the envelope inside my pocket. After 5 hours and 50 minutes, a voice announced that the plane is about to land. The plane landed inside the O.R. Tambo international airport at Kempton Park. We climbed down slowly and passed through customs and immigration. Soon, we were inside a Sienna vehicle heading to Fairland. The residential suburb is located in northern Johannesburg and is one of the most leafy suburbs in the city. Fairland was developed on land that was originally a farm. The driver drove us to Parkland hotel and suites where we lodged; each in a comfortable room. All Expenses to be paid by our firm. Eddie notified us that we will be heading to Mtn main office the next day. It was already evening; I was so tired from the flight. I showered and rested. I sent a message to Samantha. Honey, I just arrived at Fairland. We will work tomorrow. I will see you on Saturday. Will inform you before I start coming. I slept off. The next day which is Friday, we converged outside the gate and entered a small bus. The driver drove us to 14th avenue. When we entered the big Mtn building, we were taken to their conference room; there we met with their sales representatives, the main people we are working with. Introductions were made and soon, a dark fat man in a black Armani suit stood up, put on his glasses and began to brief us on their recent strides, “……Today, MTN Group is a leading emerging markets mobile operator which is at the forefront of the technological changes sweeping the world. We have invested significantly in advanced communications networks, connecting more than203, 8 million people in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East. In the past five years alone, our capital expenditure has exceeded R100 billion in the countries where we operate. In pursuit of our vision to lead the delivery of a bold, new Digital World to our customers, and our mission to make our customers’ lives a whole lot brighter, we leverage the talent of our nearly 27000 employees to offer innovative products and quality customer experience. We recognize the value of diversity within a group with a solid organizational culture….” It was all talk, talk. We spent the rest of the day helping them to map out the new prepaid plan for ‘the season of love’ billed to start on 14th February and stop at the end of the month. To make more gains and reduce costs, we gave them professional help on how they can get back money from subscribers through the back door trap. Initially, we were the ones that advised them to introduce borrowing of credits to subscribers. In the evening, I went back to my hotel room. We were to start work with them again by Monday the upper week. We have to spend the weekend here. That works in my favour. I planned to call Samantha but decided against it. I will be going to see her tomorrow morning. I could still picture her smile, her sweet embrace. I could smell her sweet aroma. She remains the best thing that has even happened to me.I slept with thoughts of her in my mind.

Episode 18 The early morning Saturday sunshine crept through my window, waking me up. It was a bright morning. I was so happy with no particular reason. I brushed up and took my bath. As I finished ordering for room service, my phone rang, I picked it up at once. “It’s me.” Samantha. Her voice has a way of melting my heart. “Morning, sweet heart.” “How was your night?” I asked. “To sleep was difficult. Thinking of you,” she said. “I dreamt of you.” I said. “Really, Tell me about it,” Her voice was filled with excitement. “Nooo! We will do trade by barter. When I come, you will tell me the news you have for me and I will tell you mine.” I said. She chuckled, “You are wicked.” “No am not. I am getting ready to start coming.” “Please. You have made me to wait so long,” she said. I ended the call and began to dress up. In ten minutes time, I was in a taxi heading to Rose bank station. There I bought a red dress for her and bought the ticket for Gautrain. Gautrain is Africa’s fastest train. With the morning rush hour, it takes a car to 2 hours to reach Pretoria from Johannesburg but with Gautrain, the journey lasts for only thirty minutes. I entered the huge speed train and sat down. I brought out my phone and texted Samantha. Honey, I’m on my way. Will see you at the station in thirty minutes. It was a fast journey. In 30 minutes time, we have arrived at Pretoria. Known as the Jacaranda city for all the purple blossom- bedecked trees, which line its thoroughfares, Pretoria is a lovely quiet city. Located 50km north of Johannesburg and surrounded by the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains, Pretoria is South Africa’s Administrative capital and home to government departments, ministries, foreign embassies and diplomatic missions. I looked around the beautiful buildings that made the city unique. They were marked with colonial influence along with touches of art deco and South African-style architecture. The train stopped and its door opened. I took the small bag containing my gift for Samantha and came out of the train. I looked around for her and finally saw her. She was wearing a white gown which stopped just above her knees. She saw me and quickly rushed to my direction. I carried her up. I couldn’t believe it. It was like a dream. I felt the joy of being with her. Her presence captivates me. “Good morning beautiful.” I said as brought her down. She kissed me hard and rested her heads on my shoulders. Suddenly, there was commotion nearby. I was already outside the train station. A police van quickly pulled up and stopped in front of us. Three policemen came out and flashed their Identity card. “Young man, we are from the South African Police service, Gauteng province. We discovered heroin and cocaine stashed under your bed inside your hotel room in Fairland. We frown at dubious men like you who come to our country to deal in drugs. You are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in the court of law.” Everything was happening so fast. “Nooooo,” Samantha was crying as they pulled me away from her. They roughly manhandled me, tied up my hands with handcuff and pulled me inside their van. “Which drugs?” “What is the meaning of this?” I was confused. I was shouting. Who is behind this? What have I gotten myself into? My head was boiling with questions and conflict of thoughts as rough hands pulled me hard inside and the van sped away.

Episode 19 “I was framed. Who is here? Can you hear me? I am innocent. I don’t know about any drugs. I was framed by someone.” I have been shouting like this more than three hours now. They placed me inside a police cell in their police station. They called it a holding area, but to me, thatis sugar-coating words. I was placed inside a dark cell with two misfits. The two men were huge and fat. They appeared to be in their forties. I didn’t know what they committed. They have been snoring since I was dragged inside to join them. I continued to shake the hinges of the railings until a policeman approached. He was of average height. His name tag read Sergeant Tshivenda. “Young man, will you stop disturbing our peace?” “Sir I am innocent.” “Liar, you are from Nigeria, are you not?” He asked. “Yes sir.” His face appeared stern. “It’s so logical. You misfits only come here to do illegal business. You Nigerians give Africa a bad name. If you make a sound again, I will make sure your suffering gets worse. Nonsense!” His voice was so deep it still lingered even after he was gone. My mind has been playing movies of everything that has happened. It’s already 12 in the afternoon. Who is behind this? Who hated me so much that he wants to frame me? What the hell is happening? I wanted to call Samantha, but tell her what? The whole lovely moment I just shared with her have now turned into a nightmare. I need to get a handle on the situation. I brought out my cell phone and dialed the last person on earth I would even think of calling. It rang four times before I heard the voice I hated so much, “Maigida, what have you gotten yourself into? Are you mad?” said Eddie. “I can explain sir, I…” “Don’t bullshit me. So, you came here to get jailed? This has already caused us a lot of damage. Our business partners here have started making excuses. They no longer want to do business with us.” Eddie was barking. “Sir, I was framed.” I said it out loud. Eddie was quiet for a while. “I don’t believe you are dealing in drugs, but what I don’t understand is who would have framed you? You didn’t even want to come here. I was the one that included you in the team. Why will someone want to frame you?” I slowed my breathing. If Eddie finds out that I lied to him about having a girl called Titi and played him to come here, that will put me into another big time trouble. How long till he finds out about Samantha and I? I pushed the whole thoughts out of my mind as I tried to focus on the problem at hand. Who framed me and what did I do to deserve this? “I don’t know Sir. That’s why I need your help. They said they found the drugs in my hotel room. It’s not true. It’s absolute fabrication.” I said. “What do you need my help for?” “I need you to help clear my name and get to the bottom of this. Coordinate with the police there. I am innocent. Plsss.” Eddie was silent. “We are in the business of finding out information. Well, I will see what I can do.” He said. I was surprised. I thought he will reject the idea. The people you think you hate the most may turn out to be your saviour one day. “Thank you Sir. I am so grateful.” I said as the call got disconnected. I sat down on the hard floor as a wave of bittersweet memories washed over me. Immediately, the Sergeant approached the cell. He was with Samantha. I quickly stood up “Not more than 10 minutes.” He ordered. She appeared disheveled. Her eyes were puffy. Oh!She has been crying. I was touched that both of us have been suffering together. She took a big risk by coming here to see me. If the public discovered that she had any link with someone accused of dealing in drugs, it will damage her image. She knew that she took a big risk but I was happy that she came. “I didn’t do it. I am innocent.” I said the first thing on my mind. She touched my hand and held it as tears quickly dropped out from her eyes. “I know.” I was surprised. Even if she trusts me, she can’t easily believe me. “You know?” “Honey I know why you were arrested. Everything is all connected,” she said. “What? You Know? Samantha, what the hell is going on here?” I asked. I was confused. How the hell did she know? “Why was I arrested? Who is behind this?” “You were arrested because of me.” she said. Her words stopped me in my tracks. It was like a cold water was poured all over me. “Oh my God!” I said. I broke down. I felt my spirits were crushed. We are victims of a terrible circumstance and someone is trying to tear us apart.

Episode 20 “You said everything is connected. You wanted to tell me when you see me. I am here now.” I said. “I should tell you here?” Her eyes flickered with fear. “Why not? Who is behind this?” She came closed and lowered her voice. “Sergeant Zithembe.” I was shocked by her revelation. Suddenly, floods of memories began to come back. “Your Fiancé? The Policeman?” “Yes,” she said. “Why will he want to frame me? Why? I don’t understand?” I was confused. “Remember when I told you my father was sick and that he was in the hospital.” “Yes.” I said. “When I got to the hospital, they told me what happened.” She said. “It’s connected to what is happening now? What happened?” I asked. My mind was analyzing things fast. I can’t pinpoint what is wrong yet. “Zithembe and I are betrothed. As my Fiancé, even though he has been treating me bad, there is nothing I could do because tradition said he will marry me. My father and his father are tight friends. They are both top government officials in this Province. I didn’t want to do something stupid or disappoint my father. I was ready to endure the whole thing.” She said. I nodded. She continued, “However, I was told that Zithembe has been sleeping around with a lot of the local girls in this district.” “What? Really?” Wonders shall never end. “When I was in Nigeria, my elder brother told me that my father paid him an unannounced visit to his house, and he caught him red handed. That was what triggered the mild heart attack. My father fainted. Zithembe quickly put on his clothes and rushed him to the hospital.” “Sorry dear. The guy has given your family a lot of pain.” I felt the pain. “My father trusted him. He treated him like a son and he betrayed him. When my father recovered, he felt Zithembe has betrayed his trust. He met with the elders and they did the whole traditional rites.” She said. “Traditional rites for what?” I asked. She gave me a look like I was supposed to know what she was talking about, “What he did was a taboo. We were betrothed to each other. It was a taboo for him to cheat on me. So, they meted out the punishment. They did the traditional rites and broke the betrothal bonds and set us free. He is now free to marry whoever he wants to marry. I am free to marry who ever I want to marry,” she said. I noticed a glint of happiness in her eyes. “Okay. How did it connect to what happened to me?” I asked. “My father was still angry with him for what he did. What he did destroyed the friendship shared by his family and ours. My father used his connections and I don’t how he did it but Zithembe was demoted from a rank of captain to the rank of an ordinary sergeant. When Zithembe received the news of his demotion from his superiors, he was very upset. He came to my house and was shouting. That was when you sent the message. Before I could get my phone, he has gotten to it first. He got the message that said you will be at the station in 30 minutes and he was boiling in jealousy. Whenever he is around me, he always wants to check my phone and check my messages. When he looked at the table and noticed that my phone was buzzing a message tone, he rushed quickly and read the message and he was furious immediately” “But he is no longer betrothed to you and he doesn’t want to marry you, why will he still be jealous?” “He doesn’t want me and he doesn’t want another man to want me or desire me. He wants me to suffer. He wants every man to see me the way he sees me. He wants any man that sees me to detest me and avoid me. He just wants me to be nothing without him. And he hates Nigerians. When he discovered what he thought was happening, he swore that he would rather let another Zulu man suffer and rot with me throughout his life than let a Nigerian man marry me.” Shit. This is so wrong. “How did he know that I am a Nigerian?” I asked. She looked down. Is she being shy? “Because of what I used to save your contact. He saw the name of the contact that sent the message,” she said. “My dear, what name did you use?” I know it was wrong of me to ask her but I want to know what really happened. “My Nigerian Love,” she said. Her voice was like a whisper. A lot of emotions washed over me. I was taken back. We have been reluctant to really say the love word even though it is in our eyes. The heart knows what it wants. Our hearts have been communicating. Sometimes, you don’t need to say the words. We both feel it and we felt it now. It took me a moment to get myself together. I looked into her eyes and she quickly looked down again. “Why does he hate Nigerians?” I asked. “I don’t know. A lot of his friends hate your people. He swore and he left my apartment instantly. I didn’t know he was planning something else. The next thing I know, I was with you and suddenly you were arrested. I made the connection, because he was the only one apart from me that have the information about where I will wait for you,” she said. It’s all beginning to make sense. That man is a coward. This is how he fights his battle. What kind of person is he? You don’t like her. You detest her and you don’t want another man to like her? What kind of jealousy is this? For all I know, this is pure wickedness. But some things don’t add up. “I understand the fact that he knows that I am coming. He surely has the motive for framing me but he needed more information. They said they found drugs in my hotel room. How was he able to know that I was in Fairland?” “He also read through the previous messages you sent to me. When you first arrived, you texted me and said you have arrived at Fairland,” she said. “But he doesn’t know my hotel room. And what evidence does he have that connects me to the crime he said I commit. Police can’t just arrest me without evidence.” “Here, they can,” she said. I was taken aback by her response, “What?” “Here there is a deep hatred for foreigners. They accuse them of being the cause of all our problems. If you are a foreigner and you are accused of any crime, you will just be arrested even without evidence, until there is evidence that proves your innocence. The hatred is too much. Last year, a lot of foreigners were killed. The scars of apartheid have not healed,” she said. This was a startling revelation. I looked up to her and said, “Honey, I understand but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. The time limit was just thirty minutes. When he got the message that notified you of my coming, how was he able to find out all the information he needed, and accuse me of dealing in drugs? How was the police able to make the investigation and discover that I was guilty of the crime he accused me of within that short time? And the drugs, who planted the drugs in my room? The time was so small for him to put all the things together. Everything happened so fast. I know he has the motive but I need to know how he did it. How was he able to pull all these off? How was he able to frame me?” “My dear, that’s what we have to find out. There are a lot that we don’t know. Even the police have not given us the details of how they were able to investigate you and find you guilty,” she said. “Honey, the whole thing smells. My gut tells me that there is something else at play here.” She nodded. I looked at her, she looks so tired, I touched her hand and asked, “Honey do you still believe in us?” She said, “Yes, I do.” “We won’t allow him to win. He can’t just do whatever he wants and get away with it. We are in this fight together and we will see this through. Nothing will come between us, not him, not this, we will come out of this mess together, I promise,” I assured her. She nodded as she used her right hand to wipe off her tears. “Please, I will give you this number. He is helping us in this. Meet him and tell him all you know. Let both of you work together and prove my innocence.” I said. I gave her Eddie’s phone number. I showed her the contact on my phone, she looked at my phone screen and typed the number and saved it in her phone as tears began to drop from her eyes again. I tried to wipe her tears but I couldn’t. “Everything will be alright. I promise.” I assured her. She nodded. “Now go.” I said. She left and I sat down on the hard floor thinking about how things have gone so wrong. Sergeant Zithembe Something else is at play here.

Episode 21 The Saturday sun was filtering through the door of the cell. It’s been three hours since Samantha left. I guess she must be with Eddie now. The whole situation has weighed me down but I am not backing down. If Sergeant Zithembe thought he is doing all these to scare me away from Samantha, then he is using all that tactics on the wrong person. Instead, all these have strengthened my resolve to do everything in my power to make Samantha a permanent part of my life and to fight for my place in her life. I was standing up, resting beside the walls. I looked at my phone, it was 3pm. My phone battery is already going down. Suddenly, a hand dragged me down. I looked around and discovered that the two misfits have woken up. “Leave me alone,” I barked. Both of them are rising up now. The bigger of the two was furious at me. I didn’t know why. A hot slap landed on my chin. It was so painful “What is the meaning of this?” I asked. “Will you shut up there boy?” The bigger one said. “You think you will come here and form boss for us?” said the second one. He was looking so black. I forced myself to stand up and began to retreat backwards to the door. “You are going to rot with us here.” The bigger one said as they both laughed. This is getting out of hand. What am I going to do? Suddenly, there was a lot of commotion outside. “This is not fair. This is not fair.” An unfamiliar voice was saying. I tried to peep through the door to observe what was happening but I couldn’t. All at once, two policemen approached the door of the cell and unlocked it with big set of keys. They opened it and dragged me out. They began to drag me to the outer office. As they were dragging me out, a police officer approached the cell with a handcuffed prisoner. “This is not fair. I have done a lot of service to this nation. I shouldn’t be treated like this.” He was the one I heard his voice earlier. Who is he? He is fair in complexion, slim and of average height. As he passed me, our eyes met. There was recognition in his eyes instantly. The expression in his face turned from that of recognition to something else; hatred. He barked, “You, You asshole, you Nigerians will come here and take everything that belongs to us. You have taken everything that belongs to me, My woman, my job…” “Shut up. Move!” the policeman ordered him as he dragged him forward. He still turned and pointed at me, “She was cheating on me too with this asshole. You… It will not go well with you and Samantha. It will not go well with you and Samantha. You will pass through the same pains you have put me through,” he said as the policeman pushed him inside the cell and locked its huge metal door behind him. Sergeant Zithembe. He appears like a gentleman. Appearance can be so deceiving. Now I know that he is a beast inside. I felt so shaken as I reached the outer office. What happened? “Sign here,” said the policeman. “What? What is happening?” “We have been ordered to release you.” He said. I was still confused. I signed and they gave me my small bag in which I kept the gift I bought for Samantha. “We apologize for any inconvenience and discomfort.” I heard the policemen saying as I left the office. Suddenly, two BMW cars approached my side and stopped in front of me. It was like a déjà vu. Samantha came out of the first car immediately and gave me a tight hug. “I am sorry for all these.” She said. She didn’t want to release me yet. I was still having this confused look. “I … I don’t understand.” I stammered. She smiled, “I know you have a lot of questions. There is someone here that wants to brief you on everything that happened.” I nodded. I looked up and Eddie and one other policeman came out of the second car. Eddie came close to me and gave me a hug. As I was so happy that he gave me a hug, he whispered in an angry tone, “You played me and you know it. You lied to me about everything when you really wanted to come here all along. I promise you, you will answer a lot of queries at home. Better get yourself prepared for another lie to tell,” he said and drew back. I maintained my composure, “Thank you so much Eddie, I owe you a big one.” Eddie gave a fake smile and said, “You are welcome. Let me introduce you to Agent Butholezwe.” The agent appeared to be in his early fifties, he smiled and we shook hands. “I am with the South African Narcotics Bureau Unit.” “Alright.” I nodded with a curious look on my face. “I know you have a lot of questions.” “Yes Sir, what happened?” “Sergeant Zithembe has been stripped of his ranks. He is no longer a police officer and when he is convicted by the court, he will stay in jail for a couple of years.” He said. “What?” “My unit has been investigating him. We suspect that he has been dealing in illegal drugs and narcotics which explain the huge sum of money in his account. The money he has is unusual for a person in his rank. So we began following his every move but we were not able to get evidence. Every time we are close to catching him red handed, he will somehow get off our trail. He has been getting away with it until now. This week, we were closing in on him but when you came along, he planned get off our trail while pinning the whole thing on you by framing you. Then he would be known as the police officer that caught another foreigner that came to deal in drugs.” “What happened?” “Your coworker Eddie showed us your room and we did not see any drugs stashed in your room. In fact, your room has not been opened by anyone since you left,” he said. “Then why…” He cut me off, “Zithembe has a partner he has been working with in everything illegal. Both of them framed you. Zithembe paid his partner to stash the drugs in a hotel room in another hotel because he didn’t know your hotel. And because he was a police officer, the police unit here never questioned him. He told them he has had you investigated and that you were trying to escape. He told them to arrest you immediately you come out of the train.” “But what if police later decide to look for evidence?” “You can stay in detention in a police cell for more than three days while waiting for your trial in court. He and his partner planned to use that window period and find out information about where you are staying and then plant the drugs in your hotel room.” “What happened?” “His partner got greedy. He requested that Zithembe should double the money he was paying him for helping to frame you. Zithembe threatened to frame him too and expose his illegal dealings to the police not knowing that he has made a mistake. The guy felt he has been dragged to the wall, he decided to come clean about the whole thing to the police and tell them everything. He approached us and for his cooperation, we will help secure him a few years in jail.” The whole thing I heard overwhelmed me. “I apologize for the way everything happened. You have suffered a lot. This is a bad way for someone to be welcomed to our city. The people of this city are very hospitable and friendly,” he said.] I shook hands with him. Eddie came forward and shook hands with me, “I will go with him. Try and get some rest you look like hell. Our work starts on Monday. Be there on time.” “I appreciate Sir.” I said. He entered the car with the police agent and their car sped off. Samantha came and hugged me. I held her face in my hands as I placed my mouth on hers and kissed her with tears in my eyes. This is too much for both of us.

episode 22 Samantha led me to the remaining BMW car. “Honey, you said, we are going where?”. She dragged me inside. She gave the driver the sign and he began to move. She was smiling. “You will know when you get there.” “Honey, tell me please.” “Nooooo.” Her face was so beautiful, “If I tell you, you may reject the idea.” “Okay, you win, but only this once.” I said as I rested my back on the soft leather of the back seat. Samantha slid her right hand around my neck and rested her head on my shoulders. “Thanks for the gift. It’s so lovely.” “Don’t mention.” It was almost 4pm. The driver passed through Ben-swart street and in few minutes time, we were driving through the 26th avenue. The car entered a small road that continued to curve until it ended in front of a huge compound. The huge gate slid open and our car drove through and stopped in front of an imposing brick building. It was big and beautiful; an evidence of the beauty of South African architecture. We came out of the car. Samantha held me on the waist as we entered the building. We passed through a long archway and entered into an expensively furnished living room. She led me to the dining room. As I was still going through a lot of questions in my heard, a powerfully built man entered the dining room. He was in his early sixties. The whole place smells of old money. “Daddy, this is Chris. Honey this is my father.” She introduced. “Young man, you are welcome. I requested for you.” His voice was so deep. I shook hands with him, his hands were big. It was only the three of us. We sat down and ate the well garnished Zulu bean and potato dish as we made small talks. Samantha served the food with vegetable relishes made from tomato and onion along with dumplings and chunks of roasted meat. “In our Language, it is called IsiphuphuluSikabhontshisi Namazambane,” said Samantha’s father. I nodded in appreciation. The food was so delicious. I didn’t know what to make out of the whole thing. I can’t doubt the fact that this is really a pleasant surprise. After eating, Samantha excused us and the man looked at me and said, “A lot of men would have backed out once they discovered what they were up against. But you stayed at my daughter’s side, in the fight till the end and even helped restore our family’s image. This shows that you are serious about my daughter.” He said. He looks like a no nonsense man. I nodded. I wanted to ask him if he know all along about how Zithembe was treating his daughter but I dismissed that thought. I am here to make a good impression and not to…. He interrupted my thoughts, “You want to marry her?” His question was very direct. For once in my life, I was sure of the one thing I wanted the most, “Yes Sir.” I said. “You have my blessing.” “Thank you Sir.” The whole experience was like a dream come through. Five minutes later, Samantha and I were back in the car as the driver drove us to her apartment in Colin’s Avenue. I need to rest but first of all, I need to communicate with my friends on Skype. It’s been a long day and I just realized that I have not been so happy like this in a long time

Episode 23 “Guy, you really had a week filled with drama,” said Timothy as his face popped in front my laptop screen. “That fool has gotten a taste of his own medicine,” said Moses as his face replaced that of Tim. It was 4:30 here but 3:30pm in Nigerian time. Tim was with Moses in his house. I have told them all that happened and they were quite concerned. We were doing video communication via Skype. Samantha went out. I was staying in the living room. “Guy, when are you coming back?” asked Timothy. “Next week Wednesday.” I said. “Be careful,” said Moses. “Try and stay out of trouble,” said Tim. “I will,” I assured them. “Any news from your side?” I asked. “Yesooo. I will be heading to Tinapa with Sheila this evening. We may probably reach there around eight in the evening,” said Tim. He appeared so excited. “Safe Journey,” I said. Moses’ face appeared on the screen. He smiled and said, “I guess I will be last man standing. I’m not going anywhere. I may go out with Jennifer tomorrow. As for now, it’s still a maybe.” “Why don’t you want to go out tomorrow? It’s Valentine’s day.” I reminded him. “And so what? I am tired of valentine wahala. It’s a one day that is so full of shit.” He said. Hmmm. Interesting.Coming from a guy that has already popped the marriage question. I kept my thoughts to myself. Tim’s face reappeared, “Mos, are you out of your mind? Valentine’s day is about celebration of love,” He said defensively. “Oh Love, is it to be celebrated only once in a year?” asked Moses. “It’s okay guys.” If I don’t stop them, they will probably continue. I am already beginning to feel sleepy. “Thanks so much guys. I appreciate.” I said. “We will keep in touch.” Tim said. I ended the connection, shut down the laptop and staggered to my bed in the guest room. I had already showered before calling them. I closed my eyes and fell into deep sleep. *** I woke up the next day by 6 am. One hour later, I was in a Sunday service with Samantha. “Love is the most powerful force in the world. True love never fails.” I intertwined my fingers with hers as the preacher continued to preach about love. At noon that day, I was in the living room watching local news when Samantha appeared. “Happy Valentine’s day.” She exclaimed. I smiled at her, “Happy Valentine’s day honey.” “Guess what?” she said. I grinned. “Please tell me. I suck in guessing game.” “Okay, get ready, we are going sightseeing today.” she announced, looking so excited. I nodded and quickly jumped out of the couch. I dressed up in blue blazer and jeans. When Samantha came out of her room, she was looking so beautiful. She was dressed in a floral V-necked bodycon cocktail dress that stopped just above her knees. “You look beautiful.”I said as I stood motionless gazing. Her confident smile widened. “Thank you.” We entered the BMW and drove out. It was Valentine’s Day and the streets of Pretoria were filled with lovely colours of white and red. We took a stroll at the beautiful Magnolia Deli Park. The whole place was crowded with couples both young and old. We strolled through the lush gardens surrounding the Union buildings. The lawn, flowers and trees in the garden provided us with a lovely haven of calmness. From there, we drove to Pretoria Art Museum. I was moved by the intense personal expression. I didn’t know she has interest in art. “What did you study in school?”I asked as we walked hand in hand along the road leading to Fort Klapperkop. “Fine and Applied Arts,” she said. I was surprised. Of course, there is something artistic about the way she does things. I was glad that I was sharing the most beautiful moment in my life with someone so special to me. I was where I wanted to be with the woman that completes me in a way I never thought possible. “Honey look.” She said. She was looking at the sky. I looked up and together we watched the sun set over the Voortrekker monument. It was so beautiful. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner at the National Zoological garden. We came back to the house by 7 in the evening. As she was showering in her bathroom, I entered her room. Everything appeared pink and female except for the red Persian rug. Nothing was out of order. Then I saw boxes under her king sized bed. What are inside them? I bent down and began to open them and was amazed at what I saw. There were sketches of drawings. One carbon paper was filled with dress sketches. Omo, she can draw. I saw Arise fashion magazine. As I was going through the contents, she came out on her towel. “You drew all these?” I asked in wonder. “Yes,”her response was not audible. She was shy. Her confidence has gone. She doesn’t just have the beauty, she has the brains. “Honey, this is awesome. You can build a great career on this.” “All my life, I have been fascinated with art and fashion. At school, I learnt all I could about form, proportion, drawing and colour composition. When I felt I had outgrown the age of being a model, I began to nurture the dream of being a fashion designer,” she said as she began to put on her dress. “Honey, this is a nice portfolio. I know a good female fashion designer based in Lagos. We will send this portfolio to the House of Marcy and if they like it, you will do an internship with them and from there, you will get all the experience you need.” I said. “Really? You will do that for me?” she asked. “Yes.”I said as I closed the boxes and stood up.” she rushed me and kissed me gently. “Thank you.” she said. Her face beamed. “Darling, we are in this together.” I promised. As I was holding her in my arms, I could picture her in my future. I can’t stand a future without her in it. Now I don’t know what I will do without her

Episode 24 On Monday, I went back to Fairland and we completed our work in Mtn. By Wednesday, we were on our way back to Lagos. I had already made plans with Samantha; she would be coming down in the weekend. On Thursday morning, my mind was unsettled, I need to get something off my chest and if it means I have to pay another price, so be it. I went to Eddie’s office. “Maigida.” he said with a surprised expression on his face. “Sir, it’s about what happened last week in South Africa. I take full responsibility for my actions. If you want to sack me, get on with it. I have made peace with myself. I am ready to face the music.” I said. He was stunned. “Wait, wait!” he said as he motioned with his hands. “Maigida, what are you thinking? We worked as a team in South Africa and that’s all I wrote in the report. You played me and so what? You got played too. You have already paid enough price. We are even. What happens in South Africa stays in South Africa.” I kept a straight face but I was so happy. Eddie can be so unpredictable. Today, he is hot, tomorrow, he is cold. From that day onwards, we became friends. When Samantha arrived on Saturday noon, I took her to the House of Marcy and introduced her to my friend, Amaka. We have been friends since our university days. After graduation, life happened and we followed differed paths and pursued different careers. Now she is a successful fashion designer. She established House of Marcy two years earlier at Ikeja and since then, the fashion house have turned into a big business establishment. Lagos has always been the centre of fashion in Africa. The city boasts of popular female fashion designers like Folorunsho Alakija – the Nigerian female billionaire and queen of Nigerian fashion industry, Deola Sagoe, Folake Coker among numerous others. “This is nice,”said Amaka as she finished perusing through Samantha’s portfolio. The whole place was filled with an assortment of Ankara designs. “Thanks,” said Samantha. Amaka is an ebony beauty. Her luxury dresses which she designed by herself costs a fortune. Always a woman of few words, she looked at me with her big eyes and said, “She can start her internship with us on Tuesday. She will start with stitching and tailoring and from there, we will proceed to designs.” “I so much appreciate this dear,” I said as I hugged her tightly. “You are now in my big debt Chris,” said Amaka as she grinned. “I will always remember,” I said.

Episode 25 Days turned into weeks and weeks changed into years. Two years later, I started my own consulting firm. The previous year, Samantha had launched her first couture collection at African fashion week in Lagos. Everything was going great in our lives. On Independence Day in October, I proposed to Samantha and she said yes. My heart was filled with so much joy. We said our vows in November in a small wedding ceremony surrounded with friends and family. Surprisingly, Moses who had not yet married his fiancée after so many years of engagement was my best man on that day. Eddie graced the occasion along with Tim, my family members and Samantha’s family members. Samantha’s beauty sparkled in her white wedding gown as her father led her across the aisle straight to the altar. It was a memorable day. A day after the wedding, we moved into a bigger apartment in Surulere. Time was moving so fast as months continued to speed forward. Due to constant pressure from my mother, we tried getting pregnant on our first year but it proved difficult. And then, on our second year, we hit the jackpot. She missed her period. We went to the hospital and did a pregnancy test and the doctor announced that it was positive. In the coming months, we began to make adjustments for our upcoming baby. There were a lot of rules on what she should eat and what she must not eat. Her contractions started in the middle of her ninth month. I was at the office that morning. She was so brave. She called and I rushed back to the house and drove her to the hospital. The Pathfinder Hospital situated at Surulere was abuzz with activity today. Samantha was rushed to the delivery room at the maternity section of the hospital. It was a Friday morning. Pathfinder hospital is a private hospital. The doctor that owns the hospital also works at Lagos University Teaching hospital. I looked at time in my phone; it was 9:45 am. Seriously, I hate hospitals. The smell of drugs and blood irritates me. The entry to the hospital was through a large heavy door engineered to open and close quietly. As I ambled across the hall way, I noticed the all-white painting. Everywhere was painted in white. The beds were somehow lumpy with padding and white sterile sheets that mask the thick plastic covering the mattress. The patients mopped at me with their big eyes as I walked past them. I saw doctors in white coats hurrying across the hallway and entering one room. Maybe they are surgeons. Some nurses were dressed in white coats and some were in blue tunics. I didn’t know the difference. I was outside the delivery room staring around the sterile environment when a nurse in white coat approached me. “Sir, you are needed inside.” She said. “Me?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. I was at lost. Of what use will I possibly be? I opened the door and went inside. Samantha was lying on her back on a birthing bed. The bed was outfitted with stirrups, handles and a birthing bar for her to hold onto as she pushes. The midwife nurse, a dark young woman in her mid-forties arranged Samantha carefully on the bed. She hooked an I.V tube connected to a drip to her arm and attached the bedside fetal monitor to her belly. There was a second nurse. She was short and plumpy. She was inputting medical information on the computer of the fetal monitor. Soon the monitor began to show readings of the Samantha’s contractions and the baby’s heart rate. I greeted the doctor as I sat down on the armchair beside my wife’s bed. Doctor Philip is of average height, dark in complexion with a weather beaten face. Maybe he has worked under the tropical sun a lot. “Hi.” I said as I looked at Samantha. “Stay with me. I need you here.” Her voice was more of a whisper. I held her hand and nodded. She forced a smile but I noticed that she was in so much pain. Her stomach was so big. She appeared so heavy. “I am here honey. You can do this.” I assured her. “Alight, we are set,” said the doctor, “Madam, it’s time for you to push.” The second nurse spread Samantha’s legs and the midwife nurse placed her hands on her big stomach. Samantha closed her eyes and pushed. The pain was clear on her face. In one hour’s time, she began to scream every five minutes. “Don’t scream Madam, you are doing just fine,” said the doctor. “You can do it, push!” said the midwife nurse. Samantha pushed as she grunted in pain. The whole process continued for the next five hours. There was blood everywhere. I felt like fainting. “Push!” Samantha made a shrieking sound as she pushed long and hard. Her face was contorted in pain. “Get her water.” The doctor said to the second nurse. I looked at Samantha; she was getting weaker and weaker. Sometimes it would seem as if the baby was about to come out, then it would go back. She had tried the breathing excuses that the midwife nurse advised, yet the contractions continued to wear her down. “Push!” said the doctor. “I can’t,” said Samantha in tears. “She doesn’t have enough strength. She is fading. We may need to do a C- section,” said the midwife nurse in a panicked voice. Even with the air condition, sweat was all over their faces. “It’s too risky. We won’t have that time,” said the doctor. “Her heart rate is failing.” The monitor beeped at once and they all looked at the screen. “There are changes in the baby’s heart rate,” the second nurse said in frantic voice. “Foetal distress!” said the midwife. “Her uterus is not contracting enough,” said the doctor, “Get syntocinon now!” The midwife went to the table beside the bed and collected the drug. She injected the medicine into the drip connected to Samantha’s veins. The midwife placed her hands on Samantha’s stomach carefully and massaged it. It was like she was trying to position the baby well. “Please Sir, she needs some space,” said the midwife nurse. I stood up and looked so worried. The doctor led me out of the delivery room. “What is the problem doctor?” The doctor was quiet for a moment. I looked at my time. It was now getting to 4pm. “It’s a 50/50 chance of the baby surviving.” “What?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “We are going to do everything we can. We may have to rely on faith this time,” he said as he patted me on the shoulder and went back inside. I sat on the long chair thinking and waiting. I prayed so hard as I shot out all the fears in my mind. Entry 25 closes.

Episode 26 Two hours later, a nurse in blue tunic approached me, “Please Sir, the doctor wants to see you in his office,” she said as smiled. I took that as good news. I was already feeling a rush of delight as I walked down the hallway and knocked at the door with the inscription ‘Dr. Philip.’ “Please come on in.” said a voice from the inside. He was already waiting for me. I entered inside the vast office. “Please sit down Sir.” He said as he motioned with his hand. I sat down on a black revolving chair facing him. “Do you want any drink?” “No Sir. Thanks.” I said politely. The doctor quickly stood up and smiled and extended his right hand across the huge desk. “Congratulations Sir, you are now the father of new born baby, a beautiful baby girl.” A rush of excitement shot through me. I stood up and shook hands with him. “Really?” I was so happy. Nothing could contain the joy that I felt. “Yes,” the doctor said matter-of-factly, “the baby was safely delivered. You can now go and see her. We have finished with her Apgar score. The baby is healthy and so full of life.” “Thank you doctor,” I said. “Please can you show me where my wife and the baby are? This whole place is so confusing to me.” I said happily. I can’t wait to see my complete family. The doctor paused for a moment, “Sit down Sir,” he said. “What? Why?” I asked, confused. I sat down. “About your wife…” I heard him saying. “Yes,” I replied as I looked anxiously at him. “I’m afraid she didn’t make it,” said the doctor as he sank down slowly on his seat. Time stood still. My whole body trembled, like I was feeling so cold. “What?” “She was a brave woman. She fought till the end. She was able to deliver the baby safely. But she suffered from a lot of complications. She lost a lot of blood. We did everything we can. We lost her. ” I couldn’t believe it. It was as though my heart was ripped into two. A part of me had died. The emotional pain was too much for me to bear. All around me, my whole began to tumble. Samantha. God why? Why her? Tears began to drop from my eyes. “I want to see her,” I said. The doctor stood up and we left the office. I tumbled, staggered as I walked. We entered another hallway. He stood in front of a metal door and dragged down the handle. The door opened and we entered inside. There were some nurses inside. The doctor led me to a bed at the extreme end. She was covered in white cloth. I opened it slowly and uncovered her face. Her eyes were closed. She looked so peaceful even in death. I looked at her face and in that instant, I realized that my life has changed forever. I didn’t know when I began to cry. There is a limit to what a man can bear. Life was so unfair to me. God why take her away from me? “Hold him. He is not stable. He may fall,” a voice was shouting. Some hands held me. The world suddenly looked meaningless. It no longer seemed bright. All the plans we made; all the promises. Everything has just fizzled away. God why? I am nothing without her. I was so angry and sad at once. There is nothing that can replace the hole I felt inside of me. How am I going to live without her? It will not go well with you and Samantha. You will pass through all the pains you put me through. Zithembe’s words continued to ring in my mind as two nurses led me out of the room. Soon, I was in another room. I could hear the cry of a baby. The nurse carrying the baby came towards me and handed her to me. “Daddy is here. Yes!” she was saying, “She is so cute and lovely.” I carried the baby in my arms. Oh! Samantha. You were supposed to be here to share this moment with me. I laid my gaze at the face of the baby. She was so beautiful, so innocent. She smiled and chuckled. Oh! I felt bittersweet. I realized that I was holding in my arms, a new life, a new beginning. Maybe the sun will shine again in my life. There is hope but deep inside my heart, I knew that my life will never remain the same again. I kissed the baby on her forehead as a drop of my tears touched her face. Entry 26 closed.

FINAL EPISODE I moaned; a hand was tapping me on my shoulder. I blinked, shut my eyes, and blinked again. My mind was fuzzy, the last remnants of my dream has been chased away with the realization that I am now awake. I yawned, and managed to fully open my eyes. A figure was standing in front of me but my vision was still blurred. Soon, my vision began to clear and I saw a nurse in blue tunic standing in front of me. “Sorry for disturbing you from your sleep Sir. You must have had a difficult day,” She said. I closed my eyes again and opened it. Suddenly, it all began to come back to me. Shit! Oh my God! I remember being led out of the delivery room by the doctor. And since then, I had been sitting on this long chair, sleeping! I managed to bring out my phone from my pocket. I looked at the time; 5:30pm! I have been sleeping for close to 3 hours! Gosh, I hate myself. I came to this hospital to be with my wife in the delivery room and to give her all the support she needs, instead I was here sleeping. “…..doctor’s office.” I looked up immediately, “You were saying?” I asked the nurse as I tried to hide my feeling of embarrassment. “Please Sir, the doctor wants to see you in his office,” she said and smiled. I took that as good news. I was already feeling a rush of delight as I walked down the hallway and knocked at the door with the inscription, ‘Dr. Philip.’ “Please come on in.” said a voice from the inside. He was already waiting for me. I opened the door and entered inside the vast office. Everything was neatly arranged. But I hate the smell of the office. At a point, I thought I was in a pharmacy shop. A long bookshelf with big medical books arranged carefully inside it, was placed at the left end of the white walled-office. Is he also a lecturer at a medical school? I wondered. “Please sit down sir,” said Dr. Philip as he motioned with his hand. I sat down on a black revolving chair facing him. “Do you want any drink?” “No sir. Thanks,” I declined. The doctor quickly stood up, smiled and extended his right hand across the huge desk. “Congratulations Sir, you are now the father of a new born baby girl.” A rush of excitement shot through me. I stood up and shook hands with him. “Really?” I was so happy. Nothing could contain the joy that I felt. “Yes,” the doctor said matter-of-factly. “The baby was safely delivered. We have finished with the Apgar score. She is healthy and so full of life,” he paused for a moment and continued, “Sorry for excusing you out of the delivery room earlier. You can now go and see your baby.” The doctor’s weather-beaten face brightened. “Thank you so much doctor,” I said, “Please, can you show me where my wife and the baby are? This whole place is so confusing to me.” I said happily. I can’t wait to see the rest of my family. The doctor’s smile widened, “Yes of course. They are now in the recovery room,” he said. “In fact, let me lead the way.” The doctor collected his white coat from where he hanged it on his chair and put it on. We left the office. We entered another hallway and cut into a long corridor. He stopped in front of a door with the inscription, ‘Recovery Room.’ He pushed the door inside and the huge door opened. The cry of a baby filled my ears. We entered inside the room. Nurses in blue tunic filled the room. I looked around and saw my wife and the baby with the midwife nurse who was attending to her. My heart leapt with joy. “We have performed the most important evaluation. Other procedures will be postponed for now,” the midwife nurse was saying, “Madam, now is a great time for you to bond with your baby. Now hold your baby skin to skin to your chest and start the breastfeeding,” she instructed calmly. The baby was still crying. Samantha saw me immediately and her face beamed. She appeared weak. She was sitting on the bed. I don’t need the doctor’s help again. I thanked him and he greeted my wife and the nurses and went back to his office. I approached my wife and sat on a folding chair beside her bed. “Kiddo! Daddy is here.” She said as she held the baby on her chest and began to breastfeed her. Immediately the baby began to suck her mother’s breast, she stopped crying. I gazed at my wife as she continued with the breastfeeding. There were still drops of tears around the corners of her eyes. I can’t begin to imagine all that she passed through today. I smiled at her. She smiled back at me. Oh! There is nothing more beautiful than a smile that had fought through tears. “You are here,” she said appreciatively. She has finished breastfeeding our daughter. “Yes,” I said. I can feel the love in her voice. She was so happy. “Sweetheart, how are you doing?” I asked. “A little bit tired but fine.” “You are looking great sweetheart,” I assured her, “the nurses here, they will provide you with all the help you need. You are recovering fast already.” “I am here. I am not going anywhere.” I added. She nodded and held my hand. She kissed the baby on the forehead mouthing words that only she and the baby understand. “Kiddo, let me hand you over to daddy,” she said as she placed the baby in my arms. I carried the baby, my baby daughter and looked into her eyes. She has the same eyes as her mother, with soft black hair, little fingers and little toes and the cutest nose. At that instant, my heart was filled with joy. She was so beautiful, so innocent. She smiled and chuckled; very smart baby. Somehow, she knew she was in the arms of her father. She felt so safe in my arms. So cute. Fair and lovely. I kissed her on her forehead. Oh! I just want time to stand still so that I can take time to enjoy every second of this lovely moment. I handed the baby over to my wife. She placed the baby on her chest and intertwined my fingers with hers. As I held Samantha’s hand, I realized that I am a father at last and I am not going to take this gift for granted. Love started it all, with a first encounter that changed our lives. Now, we are holding in our hands, a new life, a new beginning. I felt so proud because right now, with my complete family by my side, the world has become a much better place. It’s the three of us against the world and the love that will help us to conquer it all. Final Entry closes. THE END. APPRECIATION Maintaining the intensity that this short novel needed was never easy. Thanks to all my readers who started this journey with me right from the beginning of the first episode. Your encouragement and support has turned a difficult process into a memorable one. I remain grateful to you all. All rights reserved. Stan Chukwuebuka Umezulike.
