?The Prologue?

I sat on the tall Igbuala mango tree, plugging only the soft red colored mangoes and slipping them into the pockets of my brown short knicker. The red mangoes were my favourite mangoes. They had no seed at all. One could easily throw the mangoes into his mouth and chew it like the popular blue berries. It was soft and had the sweet taste of lemonades. This tree was believed to be a gift from the gods.

GrandMa had told me that the Igbuala tree was a tree planted by Agundaobi, the god of beauty and love. I was only five years old when she told me the story of the beauty god and the history of the Igbuala mango tree. I loved the story so much. Many parents told their children that same story.

I would run to grandmama when ever the white moon was out, and drag her by her hands until she followed me outside, limping with her stick which made the "kolom kolom" sound on the broken cement floor, while she carefully picked her steps out of the room.

I remember the first day grandma told me the story of the celebrated tree. It was on a dark chilly evening, when the cool breeze of the night robbed its comforting hands on our naked body, bringing sweet chills to all who were ready to embrace it.

I had dragged grandma outside as usual not only to enjoy the sweet breeze, but also to tell me the story of the popular Igbuala tree.

"Mama tell me the story of the Igbuala tree. I want to know about it." I pleaded with my eyes turned into that of an innocent puppy.

I called her Mama even though she was not directly my own mother. Grandma was my father's mother. Grandma was a quiet woman who smiled always. She loved me like her own child. Grandma once told me that she loved me even more than she loved my own father. Although I took her words as mare exaggerations. I couldn't understand why a mother would love her grandson more than her own son.

"Ike do you really want to know about the Igbuala mango tree?" She asked.

"Yes mama." I replied happily with a grin on my face.

I folded my legs like a village native doctor, preparing to llisten to grandma's story.

"Long time ago, the people of Agugu found favour in the eyes of the gods. The gods blessed them with everything beautiful. Women gave birth to handsome young men. Our women were an epitome of beauty and grace."

"The gods loved us to an extent they visited us in human flesh during dinner, and ate from the same table with every single family. They ensured they were present in full flesh on every festivals we held too. The walked on the streets and even stopped to help the young and old who needed help."

"One day, during a major festival held in the village, Agundaobi the god of beauty and love, visited and fell in love with one of the maidens in the village."

"The whole village was surprised and also excited when they realised that Agundaobi had fallen in love with his own creation."

"He loved Ijeoma with all his heart. He paid her annual visits. And when ever he did, he brought her mangoes- Red soft mangoes. This mangoes were very sweet. They were unique. They were not like the common mangoes we see on the trees. This mangoes were said to exist only in the land of the gods."

"Ijeoma loved the mangoes so much. It was with that mango that he won the love of Ijeoma. As she ate the mangoes, Ijeoma grew very beautiful. Other maidens became jealous and envious of her beauty. They too wished that Agundaobi the god of beauty and love, will choose them as his girlfriends too."

"But something happened. The food of the gods which was meant for the gods alone, was now being consumed by a mare human. Agundaobi had forgotten the rule of the gods, and fed her too much mangoes. Soon Ijeoma began to see things only meant for the gods."

"She began to see spirits. She saw demons. She saw the black ones which had no legs. She saw demons with six black eyes and black smoky waist. And at night, she saw the ones with teeth's on their feet and tails on their forehead."

"The curse on Ijeoma could not be reversed. Agundaobi tried all he could to save her but he could not. This made Agundaobi cry a bitter cry."

"Ijeoma was going through pains. She began to live her life in fear and isolation. Agundaobi could not bear the pains the love of his life, Ijeoma was going through. One day, Ijeoma begged him to kill her. It was a really though decision for him. Agundaobi the god of beauty and love, granted her request and slit Ijeoma's throat with his own sword."

"He buried her himself and planted the red mango tree on their favourite meeting spot on the street of Igbuala. This was to serve as a remembrance and a gift to Ijeoma's. Agundaobi swore that his tears would never dry. He swore never to stop mourning Ijeoma."

"Every morning, he comes to the grave of Ijeoma and cries. It is his tears that waters the Igbuala mango tree. Ikenga, below that mango tree is the body of Ijeoma, Agundaobi first and only true love."

"In other to ensure that no other human eats from the tree, he cursed the tree and made it very tall so that no one climbs it. Anyone who eats from the tree would inherit Ijeoma's curse. And he shall see the demons Ijeoma saw while she was still alive."

My heart played the fast beat of the Ofola drum, while grandma told me the story of the red mangoes. My eyes became soaked with tears. My body became cold And frozen.

"Grandma, does that mean we would never eat from the red mango tree? The mango is always fresh and tasty. It never dries up. It is inviting."

Grandma chuckled and coughed. She pulled me closer and dropped her walking stick beside her. She lifted her right hand and robbed my shiny head with her hands.

"Ike, Agundaobi is a fair god. He knew that we would love to eat from the mangoes too, so he lowers the height of the mango tree once every year. It was lowered low enough for villagers to climb and plug from the tree, which was also the food of the gods. That way, our consumption from the mango tree will not be much."

I grew up knowing about the Igbuala tree. After the first rain of every year, the mango tree was lowered by the gods for all to come and eat from. The Iguala tree was admired by every man and woman, boy or girl who walked pass the tree. It was a tree which bore fruits every single day.

I hated the green and yellow mangoes. They were popular in the village, and patronized by all. But the Igbuala tree was the only tree that brought out red mangoes that resembled the apples of Umubula. It was always admired but never eaten unless the gods lowered the tree.

A single bite brought out sweet red juice that painted the lips and tongue of the eater in a beautiful pepper red design. The lips of the eater stayed red for several days before it finally washes off.

I plugged the last red mango from the Igbuala tree and climbed down like a village soldier.
I took to my heels, heading back home to grandma.

Today is not the Igbuala tree plucking day. The rain has not even showed any sign of its coming, neither have the gods lowered the tree for anyone to eat from.

My name is Ikenga, the true and only son of my father, the lovely grandson of mama, and the stubborn he goat the kingdom talks about.

As I ran cutting through the thick bushes, I felt something chase me behind. It was something fast. Something strange and very scary....

To be continued....

My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do.

?episode 1? I stopped and turned back in terror. I was frightened and was panting like a thirsty dog. I began to look into the thick bushes with my eyes shining like that of a newly washed lantern. I walked backwards hoping to catch a sight of what was chasing me behind, but yet I could see nothing. The frightening sound seemed to have stopped. Nothing seemed to be moving through the bushes any longer. I turned back and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I ran with all the strength I had. I held tightly onto my Red juicy Igbuala mangoes. I was not ready to loose anyone of my freshly plucked mangoes. At least not after the whole risk I had taken to come all the way to Igbuala to plug this fruit. They were four in total, the red mangoes. I had intended making them five but I couldn't when I realised that my pockets where already filled up. I had tucked them into my pockets so that non fell on the road side while I ran. "Ikenga.... Ikenga.." A soft voice whispered in my ears as I kept running. It almost felt like the person was running effortlessly right beside me. I felt the breath touch my ears softly. I heard the voice clearly. Like a soldier, I halted and turned round in fright. My eyes hovered around in search of the one who had called my name. All I saw was the thick push. I saw the thick grasses. "Who are you? What do you want from me? Show yourself. I command you in the name of the gods of Agugu to show yourself." I shouted pretending to be bold. The voice laughed like a tickled child. It was the laugh of a feminine voice. It echoed from the distance. It sounded like I was in an empty room. I felt my legs shiver. I felt my bones suddenly grow cold. I turned to run but suddenly collided with a huge tree. The tree looked like one which had appeared behind me. I never noticed it. I didn't even see it from a distance. It was a fruitless tree with seven branches which had green broad leaves and plenty of sharp pointed thick thorns. This tree seemed to have been planted right beside me. I hid behind the tree and kept looking at the far distance in search of the voice. My eyes searched piercingly through the bush. It was then I saw something. It ran through the bushes in a circular form. At first I thought it was a snake. But when it began to stop in the bush, and run again, I decided this was something strange. I stretched my hand trying to reach for a huge stone that lay beside me. The strange animal which I could not see, headed in my direction. I jumped up, holding firmly unto one of the branches of the fruitless tree. I quivered in fear when I saw a white rabbit run pass me. I heaved a sigh. This rabbit was big. It was the exact size the hunters sold for four piece of cowries at the Agugu market day. They would tie it up with the blood of the animal gushing out of its neck. The freshly slain rabbits cost ten pieces of cowries. If a hunter was to bring the rabbits fresh and alive, it would cost even more. The white rabbits where the most expensive. They were said to be the first creations of the gods. A hunter who brought white rabbits to the market to sell was going to leave such a place a wealthy man. I jumped down from the tree and began to wonder why this rabbit was chasing me all along? If only I had a spear, a net or a bow and arrow, I was going to strike this rabbit for causing me so much fear. I will skin it alive, and watch it quiver in fear too. After that, I will roast it and make a sweet pepper soup spiced with Utazi leaves for grandma to eat from. I turned round to walk away when the strange voice sounded yet again. "Ikengaaaa.... Ikeee...." The voice called out in whispers. "Please who are you. Show your face. Show your face now. Stop hiding. Stop being a coward." I shouted. The bush path was a long path to the village it was not even a short cut that could get me back home. This was a very long cut. I had opted to take this path back home instead of the normal road the villagers usually took, because I didn't want to be seem by anyone. I didn't want to be seen with the red Igbuala mangos by any villager. This was the exact road the seven widows of Agugu, who had killed their husbands were slain by the gods. Their bodies were rumoured to have been found in this same bush path years ago. I also heard those stories when I was just a child. Mama had told me the stories of the seven widows and how they planned to kill their husbands, even before she told me the stories of the red Igbuala mangoes. That day, I sat down right beside grandma and watched as she struggled to finish her bitter cola first. She loved bitter cola so much. She said bitter cola helped control her blood pressure. She would chew it every morning and night like chewing gum. It served as her chewing stick when she woke up in the early hours of the morning, and her companion in the afternoon. Grandma says there is so much lesson to learn from chewing the bitter cola. She said the first lesson was to realise that nothing last forever. Not even the bitterness from the cola would last forever. The second lesson was to know that at the end of every bitter cola, comes the sweet taste at the back of the tongue. She said their is always a sweet part of life behind every bitter taste. I didn't understand what she meant. I had never chewed a bitter cola before. But from the name, "bitter Cola" I could tell that it was bitter. When she was done, she dusted her hands and spat the shaft of the bitter cola on the floor. She lifted her falling wrapper up to cover the top of her fallen breast and coughed to clear her throat. "Ike are you ready for my story now?" She asked. "Yes mama. Tell me about the seven widows who killed their husbands." "Once upon a time, there lived seven proud beautiful married women from the seven tribes of Agugu. They were proud and very boastful. Because they were proud, they were also very stubborn." "It was a tradition to hold a wife picking festival for the single maidens in the town. This festival was graced by the rich and handsome men who came from far and near, hoping to pick a wife back home. Their bride price was paid in full, and their beautiful wife taken with them immediately." "This seven beautiful women, whose beauty was given in abundance by Agundaobi the God of beauty and love, felt that their husbands where ugly, poor and not deserving of their beauty. They women also wanted to participate in the wife picking festival, so that they could marry rich and worthy men from other great kingdoms. And so, they thought on what to do as the festival drew closer." "Each of them made up their minds to kill their husbands, so as to be able to participate in the wife picking festival. There after, they shall mourn their husbands for a short period, and finally be qualified to join in the picking festival. They all planned different strategies of death which was executed." "Their plans were executed successfully and their husbands died a painful death. Months after mourning, they joined in the wife picking festival and danced with all their hearts. Flaunting their waste, and shaking their breast to draw the attention of men towards them." "Agundaobi the god of beauty and love, who had watched in silence as these events took place was annoyed with them. He struck them with madness and made the widows run into the bushes. It was there that the gods struck them dead and buried them himself. But no one knew how or where he had buried them." There was still something missing in the story grandma had told me. I wanted to know how they both killed their husbands. I wanted a vivid picture of how this women looked like. But grandma ended the story just like that. I knew she was hiding something from me. It was something she didn't want me to know yet. Her story was rushed and didn't sound like other stories she had always told me about. Grandma had only told me the exact bush they were buried. This was the bush. This was the place. But no one knew the grave of this widows were buried. I brought out a red Igbuala mango from my pocket to eat. I was hungry and now very thirsty. I leaned on the fruitless tree with seven branches. I bit a mouth full of the red mango, and sucked the sweet juice from it. I chewed the mango in delight and closed my eyes so as to savour the sweet taste coming from the Igbuala red mangoes. This was the sweetest mango I had ever eaten. No other mangos in Agugu tasted like this one. No wonder Ijeoma could not get enough of the sweet fruit. I was about taking the next bite, when I suddenly felt the rough tree I was leaning on, suddenly grow soft. Its softness was very comforting but yet strange. I felt the tree move slowly and dance on my back as I chewed the red Igbuala mangoes. I lifted my head to find one of the thick thorns that laid beside me, now metamorphosed into a baby snake. I shrieked and shifted. I lifted my eyes up to find the seven branches of the tree turn into a snake with seven giant heads. Each of the seven heads had two huge horns and very sharp teeth's. The many thorns on the body of this giant snake with one body, now looked like warms folding up against each other. I stood up to face it. When I had caught the full sight of this dreadful creature, I screamed in terror but fell backwards almost immediately. I threw the last red Igbuala mangoes into my mouth and chewed it hurriedly while I struggled to crawl away from the snake. The snake tree grew taller but could not uproot itself from the floor. Its seven head extended towards me and rounded me up. I swallowed the red Igbuala mangoes in a hurry and shouted in terror. "Leave me alone. Leave me alone. I have done nothing to you. Leave me." "Ikengaaaa... Ikengaaa" the strange voice spoke again in echoes. My Heart beat increased as I watched the seven heads of the giant snake crawl towards me. To be continued.... Episode2 Just like one who had received a sudden pound of energy, I stood up immidatly and jumped one of the heads of the snake. I ran as fast as my feet could carry me. The snakes which appeared hungry, chased me behind as I ran. I jumped through thorns and passed through the thick bushes. I threw all that was in my hands at the snake except for my sweet red Igbuala apples. When I had gotten to a safe distance, I stopped and turned back to see the tree which had turned into the seven snake heads. The snake heads had mysteriously disappeared. The horns where no longer there. What I saw was the same tree I had seen earlier. It was a tree with seven branches and broad leaves. I sat down on the grass and kept panting with my tongue out like that of a dog. I was out of breath and exhausted. This must be where the gods dwell I thought to myself. There must be something strange about this path grandma knew which she never told me. No wonder villagers rarely followed this bush path. No wonder parents advised their children who intended going to the stream to fetch water, not to take the short cut, or any available road, but to follow the normal road which led back home. They were also advised not to stop to look at the red Igbuala mango tree, so they do not get tempted to eat it. Young maidens where the ones usually attracted to the red Igbuala Mangos. They would drop their water pots on their way back from the stream, just to have a glimpse of the red mangos, which flaunted its smooth red colours. Most of the girls who had stared at the Igbuala tree for so long, had claimed to hear voices telling them to climb and pluck it. Grandma had told me that it was a trap. She said it was the curse set by Agundaobi, which spoke to the maidens to get them to eat the fruits. Most of the girls who heard the strange voice, quickly picked their water pots and ran away, while some stood still admiring the beautiful fruits. It was said that the strange voice selected only the beautiful ones to talk to. This was because Ijeoma was a very beautiful maiden when Agundaobi met and fell in love with her. The curse only spoke to the beautiful ones. It told them how beautiful they could become if they ate the fruit from the tree. Some of the maidens testified to have seen pictures of their magnificent beauty being shown to them, supposing they tasted the fruit from the tree. After so many years of avoiding the temptations from the red Igbuala mango tree, today I had finally fallen prey to its charm and the sweet voice that spoke in my head. I didn't go to the stream to fetch water. Neither did I have any reason to have left my house that morning. All I needed was to take a morning walk. It was that walk that brought me face to face with the Igbuala mango tree. My eyes beheld the beauty from the red fruits. I was enchanted and stood for a while, wondering why the gods will plant such magnificent fruits and yet keep it away from the reach of mankind. So many question crossed my thoughts at that moments. Why was the gods so wicked? Why didn't Agundaobi plant a fence that was going to cover the fruits from the eyes of the villagers? Why didn't he make the tree invisible so that no one could see the tree or even eat from it? Agundaobi had so much power. He could do it if he wanted to, but why didn't he? Why must he plant the tree at the only path leading to the only village stream that was the only source of water to the villagers? Why didn't Agundaobi plant the trees in the evil forest? Why did he have to set the tree here? This was like cooking a very delicious plate of hot Abacha, or a serving a bowl of 'ji akwukwo nri' to a hungry child, yet leaving him with a warning not to ever touch it. How would the child bear the Aroma? How was he going to overcome the temptation? I was still in a plethora of thoughts and staring at the red Igbuala mangoes, when a sweet feminine voice spoke to me In my ears. "Eat from me, and I shall show you so much sweetness." At first I thought it was one of the maidens who had decided to play a trick on me. I turned left and right in search of the voice but could see no one. I saw the tree shake, and the voice echoed in my ears again" 'Eat from me young boy and I shall show you sweetness.' I felt a sudden spark of energy in me. I do not know what made me climb such great heights like a monkey. No one had ever climbed such heights to pluck mangoes. Not even the greatest palm wine tappers in Agugu. I only realised the great height I had climbed down from, when I took to my heels with the red mangoes in my pockets. After I had regained my strength and breath, I thought about heading back for the roads. I thought about leaving the bushy paths. But when I remembered the huge snakes with seven heads, I decided to keep going and face what ever that came my way. I stood up, dusted my cloths and began to make my way through the bushes. "Ikengaaa... Ikengaaa..." A sweet soft voice called out. I stopped to listen again. This time I was sure it was a human who spoke. This voice did not sound like the echoes I had earlier on heard while running. It was too real to be true- a real human voice. I wondered what a female would be doing in such Isolated forest. I searched with my eyes and my neck turned in all directions. "Who are you? Who calls my name? Show your face." "Ikenga it is me. Do not be scared." "Who? Tell me. Please come out of the bush you are hiding." "Promise me you will not run Ikenga. Promise me." "I will not. Have seen greater fears already. I have seen a giant snake with seven heads. What more now do you want to how me? Show your face. Come out!" I thundered boldly. To be continued.... My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do. Episode3 There was a sudden silence that erupted. All I could hear was the wind blow the branches of trees from left to right. I felt my fear slowly creeping again. My boldness seemed to have disappeared. I wondered if this was actually a human voice that had spoken to me or another spirit. I stood with my feet trembling, while I turned round in terror. "Ikenga." A soft hand landed a firm grip on my shoulders. I freaked out and gave a short loud scream. I fell to the floor and turned in a hurry to see the hands that had touched my shoulders. I turned to find her laughing. It was a fair maiden. She laughed like I was tickling her armpits. She laughed so hard. She had seen the fear on my face and the funny expression too and couldn't stop laughing. "You said you were not going to be scared. So why are you scared? Why have you fallen to the ground when I have not even pushed you yet? Why do you want to run when I wasn't even chasing you. " She asked. This was a young lady standing in front of me. She was slender and very beautiful. She had long black hair that fell neatly behind her shoulders. Her hair was so long that it ended below her waist. I felt like combing it with my fingers. I wanted to feel its texture and softness on my skin. She was clad in two white wrappers. One of the wrappers was wrapped around her breast, but exposed her flat belly. And another was tied to her waist, but stopped below her laps. She was standing bare footed on the rocky floor. My eyes went to her big toes, and I saw how beautiful her nails were. She had straight legs, and well shaped curves. I stared at her face, and saw the beauty she possessed. Her eyes were like candle lights. Her nose were pointed and looked like one I could yank off her face. Her lips were pinkish in color. They were well shaped and neatly curved. When she smiled, I saw her set of white teeth sparkle like the pearls gotten from the Aguja shrine. Those teeth were like that of a babies own. They were spotless and neat. They looked like a teeth that had never chewed on any food substance before. This was a god mother of beauty- the most beautiful maiden I had ever set eyes on in the village of Agugu. When she spoke, the wind stood still like a servant waiting for instructions from its master. Even the sun smiled in pleasure. Her voice echoed sweetly in my ears "You must be a god. If you are not, then you must be a human but not from this world." I watched as she smiled while she stared at me with her head tilted to the left. "Who are you? Where do you come from? You are not from this kingdom." "How do you know I am not from this Kingdom?" She asked. "You do not look like any of the maidens I have seen in Agugu. Your beauty is one beyond the walls of this land. Your type of person is only told in stories for all to listen and imagine. Please tell me your name. I want to know who you are." "Why do you wish to know my name?" She asked. "Because you know mine. I am even wondering how you know mine. Tell me. How did you know my name." "You ask too many questions Ikenga. Too many many questions for your age." "But I only asked you just two questions. What your name is, and how you knew my own name. Is that too Much to ask?" She stooped and looked at my pocket. She sighted the pregnant left pocket that carried the remaining three red Igbuala mangoes. "Ikenga, You finally plucked fruits from the Igbuala tree. You must be a stubborn lad. You are really determined to challenge the gods." "No I didn't. I saw them on the floor. Me? I do not pluck fruits. It was a great wind that blew and shook the tree. The fruits fell to the floor. The mangoes were already over ripe. When I saw this, I picked them up." "Ikenga, you are not only a thief but a liar. A big liar. In the next few hours, you shall be dead. You shall face the gods wrath. Your spirit shall burn in the fire of the gods. Look and admire this eyes and beauty now, because this shall be the last face you shall see.." I stood up from the floor and walked towards her. I did not understand what she meant by a few hours to live. How was she so sure. She spoke like one who knew I was going to die. "A few hours? Dead in a few a few hours? How do you mean? Tell me please." "He who takes fruit from the red Igbuala mango tree shall die. You know of this already." "No I do not. My grandmother only told me about something like a curse. A curse that makes us see things the gods alone can see." "Wait! Was that why the giant snake with seven heads chased me. Was that why I kept hearing voices? Was it because of the mangoes." "Yes. Demons. That is what they are. They are called the Demons of Agugu. That was just the first demon you saw. You are really lucky to have escaped that demon. Many have been swallowed and eaten by the snake demon. Many more demons shall come after you. You have eaten from the fruits of the tree, now you shall die." "Who creates a snake demon and plants it as a tree?" "Agundaobi does. He is the god of beauty and love, but he has power to punish the stubborn and beautiful too. Agundaobi created seven separate demons he uses to punish and protect his villagers. Each of this demons comes with its form and power." "And who did he punish? Who did he turn into a snake with seven heads." "The seven headed snakes were the seven widows who killed their husbands. Agundaobi gathered them up and turned them into a big giant tree with seven branches. He uses them as weapons to hunt those who have disobeyed his instructions." "For now Ikenga, you have escaped the first demon- the seven headed snakes. There are six demons left." I quivered in fear and trembled. I dipped my hands in my pocket and pulled out the three red Igbuala mangoes and flung them on the floor. "I do not want the mangoes again. He should take them away from me. He should forgive me." "Ikenga, it is too late. With or without eating your mangoes, you must face the remaining five demons." "How did you know this? Who are you? Please tell me." I demanded as I took my steps backwards, slowly moving away from her. "My name is Amara Agundoabi Ochebe. The first daughter of Agundaobi, the god of beauty and love. And the daughter to the queen god mother of beauty, Ijeoma Agundaobi." "I am the seventh demon and the strongest of them all. If you manage to defeat the rest, you shall not defeat me. Ikenga I am sent to kill you." To be continued.... N:B Do not read without dropping a comment.

Episode4 I staggered backward and came crashing down to the floor like a fallen Udara tree. I stared at Amara piercingly in the eyes. I could feel my pulse beat very fast. The sweat on my forehead was triggered by the sudden fear I felt. "No please, take back the mangoes. Tell Agundaobi to take back his mangoes. I do not want any more. I just want to go home. I want to go home to the arms of my poor grandmother. She must be worried about me now. It is already noon and I am not yet back home. Please let me go. Forgive me." I pleaded with my hands raised high. Amara kept staring at me. She never said a word or replied me. I stood up and ran away from her, leaving my three red Igbuala mangoes behind. I was bent on getting back home as fast as possible. When I do get home, I was going to pull off every cloth I had on me and run straight to the shower to take my bath, there after, I shall remain inside the house for days without going out. Just yesterday, I had fetched enough water from the stream to last us seven market days. Grandma had bought food just yesterday too. My stay indoors was going to be guaranteed. I got tired of running and soon started walking. I was literarily staggering like a drunk man intoxicated by palmwine. The short cut had soon became a long walk. Despite my fast run and fast walk, I still could not see the end of the bush path. It seemed to me like I was on a long journey through the wilderness. I turned left and sighted the kola nut tree. It was there in a distance. I stopped and stared at it. This was my first time of seeing a cola nut tree with my own eyes. It was not as tall as the coconut trees. It was exactly the size of the mango trees and the apple tree that were planted in the farms of villagers, and road paths in Agugu. At that moment, I thought of grandma. I remembered how she took her kola nuts as her favourite companion and her greatest muse. Grandma had once told me "Give me kola nuts and you would be making me the happiest woman on earth." "Give me kolanuts and I shall tell you the sweetest stories you want to hear." She said a child who offers Kolanut to his elders, also increases his own life span, because such an elder will spend the rest of their days chewing the kolanut and praying that the gods preserve them. I still remember the first kolanuts I bought her. It was on a market day. I had gone to buy tubers of yams in the market and had sighted this woman with a tray of kola. I stopped to buy grandma some kolanuts. I knew she was going to love them. When I got home and handed it over to her. Grandma smiled. She planted a deep kiss on my forehead and laid her hands on my head. "Ehennnn. This is how a child should behave. This is what a child should give to his parents. A child who buys sweets for his parents shortens their life span, because he feeds them with sugar. But one who buys kola wants his parents to live long, and they will definitely live long." That day, grandma blessed me with both hands. I watched as she broke the kola in two and threw half in her mouth while she put in the other half in her breast wear. I thought of grandma and how disappointed she will be with me, when she finds out that I had eaten from the Igbuala mango tree - the same mangoes she had warned me not to eat from. With my hands on my waist, I kicked a big stone and turned to continue my journey. "Do you really think you will get home after all you have done.?" I turned in search of the voice that spoke. I had recognized that voice. It was that of Amara the daughter of Agundoabi the god of love and beauty. "Where are you? Why are you following me?" I thundered in fear. "Too sad you cannot see me any more." "But why? Show me your face Amara." "I am a god remember? I am the only daughter of Agundaobi the god of love and beauty. I am a spirit and not human." "But you were human few minutes back. I saw you. I felt your feet touch the floor. I saw the bushes give way as you walked through it. I felt your soft hands on my shoulders. You are a human and not a spirit." "Well yes. Somehow I look like a human and I am also a spirit. That is because the gods look like humans, but can't be seen. The gods created every human that walks upon the surface of the earth to look exactly like them." "But he never gave them powers to rule the world. Because humans are greedy, selfish and thieves. Humans are like grasshoppers. All they do is destroy what the gods have created." I heaved a sigh. "Why do you call us greedy and selfish? I am not greedy, neither am I selfish." "Will you keep quite." Amara's voice thundered in my ears. "Over two hundred mango trees planted and provided to you by the gods, yet just one mango tree- one mango tree you were asked not to touch, you still went your way to have it." "You did not only have one to eat, but you made sure you plucked four and filled up your pockets like a stingy thief. Are you not a selfish human? Are you not?" "But humans are not as perfect as the gods. I was tempted. We are created to fall into temptations. Even the gods themselves fell into temptation by dating a beautiful human. That shows even the gods make mistakes." "Will you keep quiet Ikenga. I will roast your mouth with fire for the words you have just spoken. Are you trying to mock my father? Ikenga do you want to make a jest of my own father?" "No. I am just saying. We are not perfect. I fell a victim to the beauty of the fruit. I admired it instead of looking away from it." "I could not stop admiring those red ripe mangoes, just the same way I couldn't stop looking into your beautiful eyes when you emerged behind me." "I couldn't get myself to run away from you. I had never seen such beauty as yours. It was like it...." "Keep quiet you human with a sweet tongue." Amara roared loudly. "Speak to me no more. You think you can woo me with your sweet words?" I felt Amara voice rise in anger. I bowed my head to the floor and buried my knees to the grass. "I am only a human who saw true beauty and appreciated it. The least I ask for now is forgiveness from the gods. Please forgive me. I have long let go of the mangoes. I am no longer with them. Please let the gods forgive me for this I have committed." I pleaded. I felt my eyes being soaked with tears. I felt my throat suddenly dry. "Ikenga, the gods only forgives the sins of those who did not know that they have sinned. When the gods warn and you disobey their instructions despite their warning, you shall be punished." "Now Ikenga, you must face your second demon." "Nooooooo!" I shouted with every strength in the fibres of my body. I saw a scorpion emerge from the bushes onto the path way. It stood in front of me, glaring at my feet and pointing its telson in my direction Its stinger lifted high above its head. I lifted my legs to smash the scorpions head, when suddenly a thunder struck. I heard a rushing sound like ants moving through the bushes. It sounded like a bunch of bees flying in my direction. Soon, I saw many more scorpions of black, white and brown rush out of the bush. The scorpion which was standing in front of me, suddenly grew tall with long legs. Its tail was as long as a rope. It was thick and bigger than my both hands. In its eyes I could see fury. I saw its claws grow bigger in size. Inside of claws was a big red tongue with two edges. I followed with my eyes piercingly fixed on this giant scorpion, as I saw its legs grow thicker and its body become fatter. The Tiny scorpions which were over three thousand, rushed in my direction like a broken pipe of water. My tried to move my feet but it couldn't be moved. I found myself glued to where I was standing. "Agundaobi forgive me." Were the three words that left my lips in whispers. To be continued... N:B Do not read without dropping a comment.

Episode 5 A flash of lightning followed almost immediately, causing thick darkness. The eyes of the tiny scorpions flashed like lighted touches running in my direction. I turned and ran as fast as I could. I searched with my eyes for the nearest tree I could climb. I turned to my left and sighted the Kola nut tree I had passed earlier on. My only hope of survival depended on that tree. It was the only hiding place I had. Six tiny scorpions which had successfully climbed my cloths, landed random stings on my back and ears. I shouted in terror and winced in great pain. With my hands, I dusted them off my cloths and increased my steps faster towards the Kola nut tree. I was running and panting in great fear. I ran like a man chased by ten lions. The fearful sight of the scorpions had increased my adrenaline. My legs quickened as I ran like a horse. Little had I gotten to the tree when I lifted my legs and jumped like an aragutan on one of the branches of Kola nut tree. The branch I had stepped foot on, made a creaking sound. I grabbed on to another which was above my head and held on to it. I watched from above as the tiny scorpions lifted their tails and clasped their hungry claws in disappointment. I felt their rage. The creaking sound from their incessant clasping of their claws, sounded like the raining of Ice blocks on a metal zinc. I used the palm of my hands to close my both ears as the noice became louder. I tried to find a perfect branch to place my both legs, while I kept a stern eye on the hungry creatures. With the way I stared at them, it felt to me like I could see every single one of them. They didn't make an attempt to climb the tree. I really did not know if they could even climb the tree. It felt like the gathering of soldiers. They had surrounded the whole tree and made the floor look like a carpet of scorpions. I heaved a sigh and sat down on one of the thick branches. Immediately, I remembered the tree with the seven headed snakes. I remembered how it had slowly turned soft while I leaned on it. I used my hands to feel the kola nut tree just to make sure it was still hard and was not turning into yet another snake. In my heart, I silently prayed that the tree remained as it were. I prayed that it was just an ordinary kolanut tree, and not another trap set by the gods. "Let all this be a dream. Let me be dreaming." I prayed as I looked down at the creatures. I lifted my eyes to find the biggest of them all- it was the first tiny scorpion I had seen- the very first scorpion that had grown into a giant scorpion. It seemed to have been the mother of all the other tiny scorpions that surrounded the tree. This creature was two times bigger than the kolanut tree l was resting on. My fear arose again. I watched keenly as it approached slowly. It looked like one which was not in a hurry to hunt me. It walked like a king and didn't run like the rest of the other scorpions. Aside the red set of tongue in the claws of this creature, I saw the tail erupt with hot fire that shined from the distance. It had horns which was planted at its jaws like an elephant. I saw its its eyes shine brighter than the tiny scorpions. It approached the tree and stood still. I noticed its ten giant legs stand firm like that of an iroko tree. It sniffed with its nose like a woman who had received red roses from her husband. I felt its breath blow the leaves of the kolanut tree. The creature sneezed and the tiny scorpions scampered behind it in fear. The tree bent backwards and my hands slipped of the branch I was holding on to. I screamed and quickly grabbed on to another branch. This time, I held it tightly with my both hands. The giant scorpion sneezed a second time causing the tree to curve backwards once more. Just like an explosion of gunpowder, a loud sound reverbrated in my ears. I turned towards the creature to find its body crashed to the floor, with its ten legs widely spread open. The creature seemed to have fallen asleep or probably collapsed. Its fall raised dust which filled the air like smoke. The clouds covering the bright sun melted, giving way to the bright sun. The thick darkeness disappeared instantly. The sun flashed its light upon my face. The tiny scorpions had mysteriously disappeared with the dust. I watched with my both eyes as the fire from the tail of the giant scorpion, spread and consumed its own body. The giant scorpion turned into ashes and was blown away into thin air. I jumped down from the Kola nut tree happily. On the floor, I could see kolanuts which had fallen down from the tree during the giant sneeze of the creature. I bent down and picked just a single piece of Kolanut. "You must be a lucky child. You are very lucky to have escaped the Second demon sent to you." Amara voice echoed in my ears. I quickly buried the kolanuts in my pockets and turned in search of her. "Where are you? Why can't I see your face any more? Why are you hiding from me?" I asked. Amara let out a great laugh. "Ikengaaa... Only those who eat the sweet red Igbuala mango are capable of seeing what the gods see. The powers from the Igbuala mangoes are fading off from your eyes Ikenga." "What do you mean by that?" "You threw away your mangoes Ikenga. Without the red Igbuala mangoes, you will not be able to see me. And that means you will not be able to see the five demons that await you. Poor Ikenga, you shall die a miserable death now." "But my grandmother never mentioned anything about the powers from the Igbula mangoes fading off. Why did mine fade off. Why didn't Ijeoma eyes not fade off when she ate hers." "You mean the god mother of beauty?" "Yes." "My mother Ijeoma had been feeding on the red Igbuala mangoes for a very long time Ikenga. She slowly metamorphosed into a god after consuming so many red Igbuala mangoes in nine months." "In your own case, this is the first time of you eating the Igbuala mangoes. You shall only be able to see two set of demons per mango." I quickly thought about the three red Igbuala mangoes I had thrown in the bush. I calculated carefully. The three red Igbuala mangoes were enough for me to see the five demons that awaited me. Ijeoma was right. Without the red Igbuala mangoes, I stood no chance. I was going to look like a blind warrior going to war with men who can see clearly with both eyes. I was actually going to die a miserable death. I quickly turned and ran back. I was heading for the three mangoes. I was heading back to pick the only thing that guaranteed my spiritual eyes to see the demons. As I ran fast like a wounded lion, I prayed fervently in my heart that the mangoes were still going to be there by the time I arrive. To be continued.... Episode 6 "Where do you think you are going to?" Amara echoed loudly in my ears. "I am going to pick my three Igbuala mangoes I left on the floor in the bush." "I thought you promised not to eat the mangoes again? I thought you had thrown them away? Why then have you chosen to go back for them?" I halted and carried my hands on my waist. I was exhausted and now very thirsty. I bent down supporting myself with my hands placed on my laps. I struggled to catch my breath as I spat several times on the floor. "But you told me without the red Igbula mangoes, I stood no chance against the remaining five demons. Or did you lie to me.?" "I am a god and the gods do not lie Ikenga. I told you the truth. Without the red Igbuala mangoes, you cannot see any other spirits. You are back to being a human. And if you cannot see any other spirit, you will not know what hit you. You will die miserably." "Is that why people die mysteriously. Is it the demons that kills them?" I asked. "For some, yes. The gods kill them using the spirit demons. For some, the gods have no hands in their death. They die a normal death. They live their normal lives and when their body is tired, their spirit leaves to the home of the gods. Others die at the appointed time the gods had provided for them to die." I quickly remembered the death of Ajudibike- Eze Patala's first son. He was a youth- a young boy of 17years old. He had testified to have felt tiny stings on his body before his death. I remembered how he laid on the floor in his compound screaming. He complained bitterly about strange bites. Grandma and I were just returning from the market when we saw the huge crowd gather in the compound of Eze Patala. We also wanted to know what was happening and stopped by to see. When we walked into the compound, we sighted Ajudibike sitting on the floor with just a boxer on his waist. He was vibrating like a slaughtered local chicken. So many people tried to hold him. Some gathered to fan him with their mats. The women who had surrounded him began to pray to the gods on his behalf. Some of the women who could not pray, pulled their wrappers and joined in fanning Ajudibike. We all prayed to the gods that Ajudibike does not die. But that same day at sunset, when the cock had crowed four times, Ajudibike died a painful death. He kept coughing out thick blood from his mouth. Red blood ran through his nose and ears. So many people thought Ajudibike was poisoned. Some others had thought he had a strange illness that took his life. But yet every one believed that the gods had a reason why they had allowed the death of Ajudibike to take place. "Was it a demon that killed Ajudibike?" I asked inquisitively. "Yes. The gods permitted the Efuzuala scorpions to sting him to death." "The same scorpions I faced moments back?" "Yes. The same scorpions. Ajudibike had stollen huge tubers of yams from the farmland of Ibesi, the poor widow who had just lost her husband to the painful hands of death- a poor widow with no other source of livelihood except the small yam plantation her husband had left her." "She went to her farmland and discovered her yams were missing. Ibesi cried out to the gods bitterly. She directed her cries to Ibuzulu the god of vengeance and justice. Agundaobi was touched by her tears too. Together they sent the Efuzuala scorpions to avenge her tears." "Ikenga, no cry reaches the ears of the gods faster than a woman's tears. When a woman prays for you to succeed, the gods answers her prayers. When she curses you, the gods answers her too. But when her cries is accompanied with a bitter tear, the gods answers with swift action." "Why did the big Efuzuala scorpion sneeze and die so quickly? Why did it fall to the floor without me touching it?" "You found shelter in the hands of the Kolanut tree. The kola nut tree is the tree of life. It is death to any demon creature that nears it. The mother demon sniffed the smell of the kolanut tree and fell flat to the floor. She died with every one of her creatures. You were just lucky Ikenga." "But why can't Agundaobi let me go hence I am still just a human? The mangoes have faded off from my eyes. Why is he sending strange creatures to me. Why? Why does he wants to kill me." I asked with a soaked eye and a beating heart. "You are paying for your disobedience Ikenga. You have annoyed the gods. Agundaobi will not stop unless you face your punishments for eating from the sacred fruits of his wife." "You should be grateful. No one has ever gone pass the first demon. No one. But you have defeated two. There is something special about you Ikenga. But you will not go too far. every creature you face, becomes even more stronger and more dangerous" "Your next demon shall find you soon. And without the Igbuala mangoes, you shall not see them. And then, your death shall be swift and quick." I took to my heels as fast as possible. I ran with all the strength I had with me. As I arrived at the spot I had thrown the three red Igbuala mangoes, I saw the white rabbit I had seen earlier on. It was devouring one of the red mangoes with all the pleasure and delight in the world. It was just about eating the next, when I picked the stone I had kicked earlier on, and flung it with all my might. The white rabbit withdrew back and suddenly disappeared into thin air as the stone landed on the floor. I ran and quickly grabbed unto the two red Igbuala mangoes and took a quick bite. I sucked the sweet red juice and licked my tongue like a dog who had finished a bowl of delicious portage. I dipped the last Igbuala mangoes in my pocket and turned round in search of Amara. "Amara where are you? Show me your face." I shouted. To be continued... Episode 7 "Not only are you disobedient, you also lack morals for the gods. You mortal. You shout my name like I am a bloody human like you. I could strike you dead instantly." I heaved a sudden sigh of relief. I was happy to hear Amara speak again. For some reasons, Amara's presence made me feel like one who wasn't alone in this bush path. Even though she had told me she was the seventh demon that was sent to kill me, Amara proved helpful in some ways. She had told me about the apples and its powers in fighting the demons. My fear for her was slowly fading away. I saw her like just another normal human. I bent my head to the floor when her voice echoed loudly. I felt the seriousness in her words. "It seems you are now growing horns. Your ego seems to be increasing every minute. Even the elders of Agugu kneel to call the names of the gods. But you stand to shout out my name like I was some kind of dog?" "I am sorry if I angered you, beautiful daughter of the gods. I only wanted to see your face again. It gives me hope in my times of fear. You have now become my companionship in this forest." "My presence gives you hope?" Amara asked rather supringly. She echoed in great laughter, which caused a wind like that of a storm to shake the grasses and leaves. I felt the cool breeze upon my skin. "Ikenga you shall face me the moment you defeat the sixth demon. And presently, I wonder how you are going to do that knowing you just have one more apple to see the remaining two demons. You won't be able to see me when the time comes. You shall stand no chance against me poor Ikenga. You shall die like a bush pig." I turned behind me to find Amara seated on the green flat grass with a long staff placed beside her, and a golden crown on her head. With her legs crossed upon each other, she held in her hands a white flower. I watched her play with the beautiful white flowers. I felt a sudden sweet feeling when I saw her beautiful face again. She looked like the true goddess of Agugu. Her skin radiated like that of a female python that had recently shredded off its old skin in one of the secrete caves in the mountains of Agugu. "Amara, what happened to the white rabbit? Why did it disappear? Please tell me. Was it also a spirit?" "Here you go again, asking questions like a student when you are at the point of death." "Please tell me, i am curious. Why will it disappear like that. I had seen same rabbit before now. It didn't disappear. It just ran away into the bushes. "Well the rabbit had feasted on the apples and thus, had now become your next demon." "Why can't I see it?" I asked fearfully. "Your eyes are already opened Ikenga. They are opened to see anything the gods see. What I see you shall see. All you need to do is look." "Please show me. Tell me where it shall come from. Help me." I cried. "It is right there." She pointed behind me to the thick bush. I turned immediately to behold the white rabbit slowly rising from the thick bush. I watched the rabbit grow wide thick wings like that of a dragon. Its four legs had turned into that of a giant eagle with sharp claws. The rabbit flapped its wings and roared like a lion. From its nose, I saw thick black smoke puff out like burnt coal. When it opened its mouth slowly, I saw fire like that of a furnace. Then slowly, very slowly, one large horn grew from the centre of its forehead. It grew very long and huge with a pointed edge. Just like a tree with many branches, ten other huge horns grew out from the big horn. This was a different kind of demon. This was a combination of different animals. I took a closer look at its eagle legs and dragon wings, then I stared into its eyes which slowly turned golden brown. Approaching from the other side of the bush, I saw a black sheep. It didn't have four legs like the rabbit or any normal animal that I knew of. This sheep had just two legs like that of a man. Its body was hairy. It stood on its two legs like a human. It was very tall, even taller than the rabbit I had seen. This sheep had five huge horns. Its horn made a crown shape on his head. Its horn was thicker and looked very sharp too. It had six huge hands. They were muscular and big. "Amara what are these animals? Who created this beast? Please tell me." I cried out as I took my steps backwards. Amara stood up from the ground, giving way to the black Sheep. "These are your demons Ikenga. Theybare your third and fourth demon. The gods sent two at once. The rabbit and the goat always work together. They feed on the same food. They punish the disobedient once." "But why two? Why not one?" I asked. "Ikenga, I told you demons grow stronger as you defeat them. You destroyed the scorpions. Now face the dragon rabbit and the demon goat." "This is your end Ikenga. This is finally your end." she lifted her stick and turned to walk away. "Nooo. Please do not go. Wait!." Amara stopped and turned towards me. "What is it?" She thundered at me. "Tell them to wait. I want to tell you something before I die. Please hold them back. Hold them back." I shouted in fear as they walked fearlessly towards me. "Why should I? You are meant to face them. Why do you think I can hold them back?" Amara asked. "Because you are the strongest of them all. You are the wisest of them. You are the daughter of the god of beauty and love." "Amara, You are daughter to the same man who created these demons and made you leader over them. You are the daughter to the beauty goddess of Agugu. The same woman whose stories I have heard and listened to all through my childhood days. Please hold them back." I cried out as the dragon rabbit opened it mouth of fire and was about to spit fire in my face. "Stop let the human speak." Amara stretched her right hands towards the two creatures immediately. They obeyed her and both stopped walking instantly. They halted like soldiers and kept looking at me with fiery eyes. The flying rabbit with a dragon wing, hung on the air like a kite - the same kite Grandma had made me when I clocked eight. I saw its long tail dance behind it like a wrapper hung on a rope. I quickly fell to my knees and pleaded in tears. "O goddess of beauty, you are not as wicked in heart as these ugly creatures are. You are sweet natured and beautiful. I know I have sinned against Agundaobi and I deserve to die. I have eaten from the tree he warned us not to eat. I deserve to die. But let me not die this way. Let me die a hero's death. Let me die fighting for my life. Give me a sword and a shield I plead thee." "O sweet Amara, do not live me like a goat in the midst of lions. Let not the villager stare at my body in pity. Let them not say he died a shameful death. It is better I loose to the demons in a combat so they will say he fought the demons but lost." The giant goat roared like a lion instead of bleating like a normal goat will. Amara turned towards it. "The Agbagu the giant goat agrees with you. You feel you can challenge the with a just a sword and shield? Fine. Take it." Amara stretched her hands towards the sky, and a sword and shield fell in front of me. The sword was sharp and stainless. This was a sword I had not seen in the whole Agugu before. This was definitely the future of all swords. This must be the swords of the gods themselves. "Your wish is granted. Fight." She commanded like a village referee. "Wait. Please wait." "What is it again?" She fired at me angrily. "I thank the gods for granting me the shield and sword. But even if I fight I know I shall still die in the hands of this giant creatures. " "And if I die, I shall regret why I never saw the last two demons. The last mango in my pocket shall be wasted." "I beg you, grant my wish. Let me eat my last mango so you show me the last demon, that I may see them before I die." "Fine, they stand behind you. Eat your last mango and die your death in their hands." I pulled out my last Igbuala mango and sucked the juice from it. Its sweetness swam to my head and I closed my eyes to savour the taste. "Even if I die, I shall not die a hungry warrior. I shall die a proud fighter with a filled up stomach." I whispered to myself. I threw the last piece of mango in my mouth and chewed with delight. When I opened my eyes, I saw the remaining two demons. I saw them. Four in total, they were standing right in front of me. These creatures were the biggest I have ever set eyes on. They were two times bigger than the giant goat and dragon rabbits. I looked at my hands and all I had was a stainless shield and a sword. I felt like an ant about to fight a gorrila..... Episode 8 The fifth and sixth creatures stood fearlessly and stared at me piercingly in the eye. The fifth creature had the head of wild beast. It had the head of a lion and the eyes of a tiger. Its sharp teeth were red and appeared to be stained with blood. The jaws of its mouth dripped with thick darkish red blood. I did not know for certain if the blood on its jaws was the blood of an animal or the blood of a human. The hair on its head was soaked with flammable acid, yet the acid did not burn its head. I saw the grass he stood upon turn dark, and slowly dry up as the droplets of acid fell on it. I shuddered as I watched the tiny sand suddenly turn to dust, and the green grass turn to ashes. This creature had the legs and hands of a warrior horse. They were three legs and three hands in number. It also possessed the tail of a monkey. It roared not as a lion but as a tiger. This creature's roar was even louder than a tigers roar. It looked like one that had ten other tigers leaving inside of it. I was filled with tremendous fear. I clenched tightly to my shield. I felt the blood in my hands suddenly dry up, and my hands became stiff as one soaked in cold water. The sword I was holding firm unto, slipped off my hands and landed on the floor like a broken egg. Amara laughed mockingly as she heard the sound of the sword land on a smooth stone in front of me. It was the same stone I had used to scare off the rabbit that had eaten one of the red Igbuala mangoes. It was the same stone I had kicked after facing the snake with seven heads. This same stone was still on my path. I bent down and picked up the sword. I turned in the direction of the fifth creature to take a second look at it again. I was surprised to see its head doubled. This transformation had taken place in a blink of an eye. Another bigger head had grown out from the left side of its neck. It now had two large heads and four eyes. The creature now looked like a combined twins. It reminded me of the story of Chioma the woman who had given birth to combined twins long time ago. Grandma had told me the story while she chewed her kolanuts one faithful evening, when the white moon was in full bloom. "Long time ago." Grand ma began after cleating her throat. "There lived a very beautiful woman in Agugu named Chioma Obaguzeli. She was married to Uzor the great hunter - the same man who had promised to kill a lion and a deer before the marriage festival in Agugu. "Surprisingly, he fulfilled his promise. No other hunter had killed a lion and a deer in such short time. His news went round the village like wild bees. "For the fact that Uzor did it alone, he was named the greatest of all time, and Chioma was betrothed to him. Her dowry was paid using the lion and the deer. "Years passed and Chioma prayed to the gods for the fruit of the womb. She prayed and gave sacrifices for several years. After seven years of prayers and waiting upon the gods, the gods shined their blessings upon her. "Chioma got pregnant and after twelve months, she gave birth to twins who got stuck in one body. The twin children had two necks and two heads. But the older twin had the longer neck while the other twin had a shorter neck. "When Ichemba the chief priest of Agugu delivered her of the baby, the villagers who stood beside her became scared. Never had they seen a twin combined together with same head on the same body. The twin babies, had three legs and three arms too. Ichemba declared that the twin was an evil sign sent to the village by the gods. He said this was a sign of a great punishment from the gods to the villagers. "All the pregnant women in the village became scared. They feared for what their unborn child would look like. Chief priest Ichemba, asked Chioma to pick her twin children and cut off their necks with her own hands. This was a way to avert the disaster that spelt doom for every pregnant woman in the village. "Ichemba told Chioma the implications of her cutting off the neck of her own twin children. He said it was a sign that she had rejected the gifts of the gods. And therefore, the gods will take notice and never send such a child to her, or to any other woman again. "Chioma who had loved her twin children considered it a gift from the gods. She saw no reason killing what the gods had given to her. And so she made a plan. She planned to run away with her lovely children on the day of the sacrifice. "When she was taken to the evil forest, to slaughter her child, Mama Ikemefuna walked in and never returned again. Some people testified that she had escaped with her twin babies to an unknown kingdom. Others testified that she had been killed and buried inside the evil forest with her twin babies." Grandma suddenly stopped talking and asked for a glass of water. She did that to signify the end of the story for that day. Several news and stories surrounded Chioma. No one knew exactly what happened to her or if she was buried by the gods. But this creature had now looked like the twin babies grand ma had told me about when I was just a child. I turned to look into the eyes of the sixth creature. The sixth creature was the biggest of it all. It was bigger than the fifth creature. It had the tail of a shark and the hands of a gorilla. Its head was that of a bull with five large horns and ten eyes. The ten eyes of this demon blinked at me. Two of the eyes were located on its forehead. Another two, below its nostrils. And four eyes on its stomach. The last two eyes where placed on its shoulders. It stood tall with its tail. This demon had no legs or arms, it had no fear in its eyes too. It looked like the boss of all the other demons. "Ikengaaa! You asked to face the four demons, now you look at them like a chicken. A poor chicken local chicken" Amara mocked. "Fight! Kill him." She commanded the four demons authoritatively. The giant rabbit with the dragon wings, rushed towards me like an eagle about to pick a chick away from its mother hen. I shifted back with my shield and sword held tightly in my hands and tripped over the stone that was laid on my path. I fell to the floor like a little child running away from the whip held by his angry mother. My sword was held tightly in my hands, but my shield slipped out of my hands and landed on the floor beside me as I searched for balance. The giant goat, which was the fourth demon, charged behind the third demon with its horns. I immediately knew that was its own strength and power. To kill with its horns. I turned to pick my shield when I sighted the fifth beast with two lion heads charging in my direction with its mouth wide open. As it charged towards me, the acid from its head swung from side to side landing on the green grass and drying it up. The 3rd demon opened its mouth, and hot fire escaped through it in my direction. With my shield, I blocked the burning fire and rolled on the grass. The giant goat caught me with its horns, it left me high up and flung me high in the air. Just like an over ripe Udara fruit, I came crashing back to the floor. My skin touched the acid from the hair of the fifth demon with a lion head and I winced in pain. I watched as my brown skin melted off and my inner flesh exposed. I stood up and charged forward with my sword and shield. The giant goat charged towards me too. With my sword, I swerved towards the left, and yanked off the horn of the giant goat. But I didn't turn in time to see the fifth beast with the lion head. It grabbed my legs with its sharp teeth. I felt my bone crack. I felt like my legs were caught in between two heavy rocks. "Amaraaaaa!" I shouted with all the strength I had in the world, as I watched my blood spill on the green grass like a punctured water pot, as a result of the bite from the wild beast. Episode 9 With my sword I turned and pierced one eye of the lion. It roared in pain and let go of my already wounded leg. The giant goat and rabbit did not slow down. The giant rabbit flew above my head with its giant dragon wings, and let out a ball of fire from above. I rolled over to the right as I watched the giant ball of fire land to the green grass. On impulse I turned behind me to find the giant goat galloping towards me. I stretched out my sword and dived towards it. I pierced through its chest and twisted my sword in its heart. The giant goat and dragon made a loud noise at the same time. They growled in pain and came crashing to the floor. Just like a mosquito that had inhaled the local Igbara insecticide, the giant rabbit with the dragon tale fell to the floor. It was without strength and it kept breathing like a man who was locked in a room full of smoke. I stood up quickly and watched as the giant lion which was the fifth demon, nurse its wounded eye. When it had noticed that the third and fourth demon had fallen to the floor, it shook its head, letting the acid on its hair sprinkle to the green tall grass. It charged in my direction, carrying fury in its eyes. I lifted my sword up above the sky and held my shield firmly. The lion flew with its three legs, knocking me down to the floor with a heavy punch. My shield fell out of my hand and out of reach. The Creature quickly took advantage and the second head, which was the longest, landed a painful bite on my neck. I shouted in pains, and in the struggle, managed to Pierce the second eye. But this creature was determined to finish me off. It was determined not to let go. It knew my death was close and it had captured me. It hanged on to my neck with its giant teeth, sucking my blood out like a thirsty baby who feeds from its mothers breast. I felt my feet grow cold. I shook vigorously like one being strangled. I was like a captured prey struggling for its own life. I was struggling for breath. I lifted my sword up, and with the last strength in me, I pierced the lion from the side. slowly and stealthily I pushed my sword through its body. i could feel my sharp sword pierce through its heart. The firm grip it had on my neck loosened. It finally let go of my neck and collapsed right beside me. I turned my neck in the direction of the Sixth demon with ten eyes and found nothing. It had turned into black ash and was blown away by the wind. At that moment, I realised that the death of a demon, meant a quick death for its partner. I had just pierced the heart of the fourth demon and the giant rabbit fell to the floor just like that. Now I had killed the fifth demon and the sixth demon with ten eyes disappeared too. What baffled me was that the sixth demon didn't make an attempt to attack me. It stood there in the distance, watching the fight with its ten eyes. I laid on the floor wounded, tired and broken. I was bleeding from my wounded legs and my bitten neck. I felt enormous pains all over me. I turned my neck and stared at the lion creature with my weak eyes. The creature looked back at me. Its look was soft - almost like a dying dog's look. I watched as the creature's eyes slowly closed. It took in a deep breath and slowly metamorphosed into an old naked woman with two legs and two hands. I shuddered in fear and push my body away from the strange woman. She turned her neck in my direction and my eyes met hers. I realised it was grand mother. My heart skipped. A fresh pound of fear took over me. I was stunned, yet a part of me was hurt. Very hurt. I could not believe that all this while I fought tirelessly, I was fighting my grand mother all along. She was the one who had wounded my legs and had bitten my neck with her giant teeth. She was the one who had tried to kill me. She had come in form of the demon with the lion head and showed me no pity. "Grandma!" I exclaimed bitterly. My throat hurt as I spoke. I felt a bone pierce me from inside. I choked and coughed. "Ikenga...." Grandma muttered my name in a whisper. "Grandma what are you doing here? How did you turn into this creature? Why did you try to kill me? Why?" I spoke with tears cascading down my eyes. "Ikenga, it was not me. It was the demon in me. I could not fight it off. You know I would never hurt you. You know I would never do anything to harm you." I looked into her eyes and saw her sober. When I realised that the creature I had just fought was my grandmother, I broke down in tears. My heart bled. I had killed my own grand mother with a sword and a shield. I had fought her and pierced her heart with my knife. The only woman who had watched over me since Papa and mama died. The only woman who stood by me and loved me with all her heart, now lay beside me in her own blood. "Amara why did you cause me so much pain? Why did you let me fight my grandmother? Why have you chosen to make me cry a painful cry? Why didn't you tell me all this while?" I cried out bitterly. "Ikenga, it is not my duty to tell you who you are to fight or not. You are simply paying for your own disobedience Ikenga. You are paying for disobeying the advice of your grandmother. "Your disobedience is what led you to this point. You have now killed your own grand mother with a sword. You have pierced her in her heart. You have done what no child will do." "But she tried to harm me. I did not know it was her. I did not know. Grandma I did not know it was you. Please forgive me." I pleaded. Grandma stared at me without saying a word. She was still breathing but gasping for breath. When I saw my dying grand mother, anger filled my heart. I took up my shield and sword. I was angry with the gods. I was angry with Agundaobi for sending my grandmother in form a demon. He had made me pierce the heart of the woman I love. The only woman that meant the world to me. I managed to lift myself up from the floor. With my sword, I supported myself. I lifted my hurt legs up. And held unto my bitten neck with my right hand. "Let the gods bear me witness. They have taken my own grandmother from me. They have made me pierce her with my sword. Now she lay down on the floor fighting for her own life. I do not fear death any longer. I have nothing else keep fighting for if she dies. "Let the gods bear me witness. They have stolen my joy from me, now I shall steal theirs too. They have pierced my heart, now I shall pierce theirs too. They have decided not to show me mercy for a sin I committed, neither shall I show them mercy." "Let the last demon emerge and let me get my vengeance. Amara show forth your face. Fight me. Come out. Come and face me." A great wind blew. It was so strong that it caused me to stagger like a drunkard and I came crashing back to the floor. A loud thunder struck and Amara voice thundered loudly. This time, I knew it was not only me who heard the voice, but the whole village. The sun disappeared suddenly and darkness came upon the village. Everywhere turned bluish. I saw the white moon emerge from the clouds. I turned left and right, but I could see no demon, neither did I see Amara. At that moment, I realised I had no more Igbuala mangoes to enable me see Amara the last demon. I was left with nothing. How then do I fight a demon I could not see? I pondered in fear. To be continued....... My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do... N:B Do not read without dropping a comment.

Episode 10 I stood up immediately and turned round in confusion. I heard the rumbling sound from below the ground. It shook the ground hard. It sounded like the hungry belly of a giant fish. When it sounded, birds flew into the air for safety. Crawling and waking animals scampered in different directions. It caused the grasses to lay flat like the combed hair of a child. "What are you up to? Are you so scared? Do you now want to fight a mare blind boy? Tell me Amara. Are you such a coward? You want to face a man who cannot see you? You have tied my eyes and exposed me to darkness, while you tease me with your sword and knives. "Amara, even the moon is ashamed of your actions. It covers its face and turns away from you. You have become like a child, yet you are god. You hide in darkness and send the wind to do your work for you. You use the power of the gods to fight a mortal man like me. "Why don't you show forth your face Amara. Let me see and fight you. I want to see your face and look into your deceitful eyes. I want to see your weakness and come after it with my shield and sword. Why do you hide from me? Are now scared? "I want to feel feel my sword made of steel, pierce through your heart like a needle that passes through a torn cloth. I want your blood to flow down my hands like the trickling of water from a cracked Iguza pot. I want to beat my manly chest and boast that I avenged my grand mother's death. "Amara, Is the gods now scared? Has the gods now turned into a mouse that runs into its hole like a thief, instead of standing to confront its fears like a lion? Have the gods now become a black goat that eats from the farmlands of villagers only to run away when being stoned with a mare rock. "Has the gods become a chameleon that hides from its prey in different colours, only to secretly come out and consume its prey when they are at sleep and off guard? Or are you trying to play wise like the forest tortoise whose tales of its cunning ways have been told to all children during the midnight moon. "Show forth your face Amara. Do not fight a cowards fight. Fight like the gods. Do not hide from a mortal man like me. Come out." I thundered. A heavy blow lifted me up from the floor like a man carried by a set of men after winning a game of draft. Like a piece of used tissue, I came crashing down in the distance. My wounded leg sent pain to my head. The wound from my neck became fresh again and I started loosing blood. My eyes opened and I saw the Demon. The demon of death and darkness. The same demon from grandmothers story. She had told me about this demon a long time ago. She had told me the power it carries. She said it was a demon with whip in its hands. She had described it as being a giant demon that punishes any one who had sinned against the gods. She called the demon Emunisike the demon of death and darkness. It was a demon I had never seen before. I saw a demon whose head carried twelve horns. It was like a human with two giant legs but seven giant hands. It was very big- the size of an Iroko tree. It was twelve times bigger than any other demon I had seen before. It had seven eyes. In its eyes was a ball of burning fire. Its hands were large and wide. This demon carried seven whips in its hands. It was a whip of fire held in each hands. It burnt the bushes where it stood. "Ikenga you have spoken enough." Its voice roared like thunder in my ears, causing me to shudder. I took two steps backwards and covered my ears from its loud voice that shook my ear drums. "You have called out the gods like it were your own mate. You have challenged and insulted the highest authority of this village. And made rubbish of our names why will still sit on the thrones of our ancestors. "You have insulted and abused my office enough. Ikenga, I have shown you my face. I have appeared to you without the help of the Igbuala mangoes. I have broken a major rule of the gods for your sake. A rule that says no mortal born of a man shall see the gods with it ordinary eyes. "But you Ikenga, have provoked me with your words and challenged me with your boldness. Get your revenge if you must. If not, I shall whip you with the seven whips of fire till your bones break and your body turn sour." I stood there confused and with no idea why the demon I faced was Emunisike, the demon of death and darkness. So many questions flooded my mind like the river of Abudu. "Where is Amara? Why do I face you? I only challenged her. It is her I want to see. I never called you to a fight with me. Bring forth Amara." "You asked for the last demon Ikenga. I am Emunisike the demon of light and darkness. The strongest of all demons. The one who walks through the waters and whose fire never quenches. "I am the one whose strength can never be matched, not by any mortal or by any other demons. I am the demon born of seven gods. I am the lion that fights to the death. I am the bull that have been present since the creation of Agugu. I am he whose whip has no end. I am the keeper of peace and the punisher of offenders." The demon lashed its long whip of fire on the floor to signal the end of his short speech. I held firm onto my sword and shield. For some reasons I was not scared. I stood strong like a soldier. I was like a rock, unshakable not even by the wind of fear or the thunder and lightning of death. I was determined to avenge the death of my grand mother. I wanted to fight for her to the death. The seven whip of the demon lifted high in the sky and lashed upon the green grass again. "Ikenga, drop your shield and bow before me. Show me your last respect before you die." the demon spoke. "Ikenga" the voice thundered loudly. "Bow to me now." "No. I shall do no such thing. I am Ikenga, the First son of my father and the only grandson of this woman who you have used as a demon to fight me. I am ikenga, the one who escaped the first demon without a knife and a shield. When it came to me with like tree and turned into a snake I saw it and I ran away. "I am ikenga the one who used the bitter cola of life as a weapon to fight the second demon. When it came to me with its scorpions littered in their millions. I was unshakable and then It dropped dead like a chopped down tree and vanished. "I am he who slew the third and fourth demon with a shield and sword. I am Ikenga the one who slayed the fifth demon, and the sixth demon vanished. I shall not drop my sword until I avenge my grand mothers death. Fight me. Fight me.!!" I shouted. A loud thunder struck and I heard grandmother call out from the ground in a whisper. "Ikenga! Ikenga! before you fight him, give me the bitter kola of life at the back of your pockets. Let me eat and be well again. I limped towards Grand mother and pulled out the bitter kola at the back of my pocket. The same bitter kola I had picked hoping to give to grand mother when I get home. I limped and bent beside her. I was about giving grand mother the bitter Kola when a voice sounded from the distant bush. "Stop Ikenga. Stop. Do not do it." I listened carefully to the strange voice. It was a familiar voice. It had sounded exactly like grandmother. I could swear that it was yet another voice of grandmother sounding from the distance. To be continued... My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do. NB: Do not read without dropping a comment. THE END OF IKENGA IS NEAR… ???WATCH OUT ????

Episode 11 I stood up when I saw a woman who was bent towards the floor, limping in my direction with a long brown stick held in her hands. From the distance, I could see that she was clad in a blue wrapper which was wrapped around her chest. Her long white hair was uncovered. I could see the gray hairs on her head which looked like that of the white rabbit. She limped towards me just the way grandmother limped. Her left hand was folded behind her, just the same way grand mother folds her hands when ever she walked. "Ikenga. Do not give her the bitter kola. That is not me." She spoke with a shaking voice. I turned towards the naked old woman who was laying on the floor in a pull of blood. The same woman I had also thought to be my grandmother. She was staring at me with so much concern on her face. I was confused. I was standing in between two grandmothers that looked very much alike. They looked exactly like twin sisters. "What is happening here? Who are you? Tell me." I shouted at the old woman clad in cloths. "Ikenga who did this to you? What trouble have you gotten yourself into. Who has wounded you this way? Why do you hold a shield and a sword Ikenga?" The old woman who looked rather concerned about my wounds, approached with her hands wide opened. "Halt. Stop. Do not come any further. Who are you?" I thundered loudly. "Ikenga, are you so blind that you cannot recognize your own grand mother? When you left the house this morning, I was worried. I saw you sneak out of the house like a thief. I had to follow you behind. But you walked faster than me and I could not keep up." "I returned back home and waited for you to return. But I did not see you. I asked the little children to go in search of you but everyone of them returned carrying a tired face and the same news." "When it was noon, I cooked us Yam and oil and waited for you to return. When I did not see you, I became worried and came out in search of my grandson." "Ikenga, I have searched so many houses. I have visited so many farmlands. I have searched so many bushes and called out your name a thousand times. "While I walked pass this bush, thick darkness fell upon the village suddenly. I heard the thunder strike. and then I heard a strange voice that spoke. The gods must be angry, Ikenga. "I was still standing at the bush when the gods made me to hear and recognize your voice from this bush. You were shouting like an angry man. Ikenga what are you doing here? Who is that woman that lay wounded beside you? Who has wounded you this way?" She asked in confusion. "Kill her Ikenga. Kill her. She is not your grand mother, I am your grandmother." The old woman on the floor spoke and coughed. She lifted her hands to nurse the wounds on her neck, and coughed again. I turned angrily towards the old woman clad in cloths and spoke authoritatively. "Prove to me you are my grand mother. Show me or I shall slay your throat. Or are you another demon sent to me?" I screamed with my sword pointed directly at her face. "Ikenga. When everyone abandoned you in the rain that fell at noon, I picked you up. When everyone thought of killing you, I saved your life. I have fed with my own breast milk to keep you alive. I have raised you like my own child. I sacrificed everything to see you happy." "Ikenga, when the cold came at night I was there to cover you with my cloth. When danger struck at night and you screamed and cried out, I was there to shield you from it. When your belly groaned in hunger, I sacrificed my food for you, and ate bitter kola instead." "On your behalf Ikenga, I fought the wolf that chased you at night. I wounded my right leg in the process, and now I limp for the rest of my life. I fought a fight that you got yourself into as a result of your own stubbornness." "Ikenga, I have given you everything that a mother will give a child. I have made you the man that you are now. You are no longer a child. You are now eighteen years old. You are now strong, wise, and bold. But today you lift your sword and shield upon my face?" She pointed her left hands in my direction. She stopped and shook her head. This was definitely grand mother. Her words had touched my heart and pierced my soul. I knelt down on my knees and called out in a soft whisper. "Grandmother….." Grand mother limped towards me and held me by my shoulders. She pulled me close to her - the exact way she had always done when I cried. She touched the blood on my face and felt the wounds on my neck with her hands. "Grand mother I have disobeyed your instructions and eaten from the Igbuala mangoes. Now I see demons - the same demons Ijeoma had seen. I Have fought six demons and the seventh one stands behind you with seven whips of fire." "Where is the seventh demon Ikenga?" "Grand mother, you have not eaten the Igbuala mangoes, so you cannot see it. I only can see them. It stands behind you." Grandmother dropped her walking stick and knelt down in front of me. She bent my head towards her shoulders and robbed my back. "Grandmother, I killed a demon and it changed into you. That is the demon over there." I pointed. I turned with my eyes but could no longer see the wounded naked old woman that had taken the face of grandmother. I let go of grandmother and crawled towards the spot she had laid down. I was stunned when I discovered that the blood on the floor where she had laid on, had disappeared along with her. When I turned back to look at grandmother, I saw the sixth demon with ten giant eyes, and legs like the tail of a fish, and hands like the fins of a shark. It was the same demon that had disappeared when I had killed the fifth demon. It was definitely the same demon that had turned into grandmother to deceive me. "Grandmother, run!" I screamed in terror. To be continued... MY NAME IS PRAISES CHIDERA OBIORA, AND I AM THE BEST AT WHAT I DO.

Final episode ✍ The demon opened its wide mouth and exposed its sharp teeth. It grabbed unto grandmother firmly with its giant fins. Grandmother struggled but could not move. "Ikenga what is going on? I cannot move my arms." Grandmother screamed in terror. "Grandmother wait. I am coming." I thundered. I stood up with my sword in my hands and limped towards grandmother. But the demon tilted grandmother's neck to the left, and landed a piercing bite before I could get to her. Like a snake, it sucked unto grandmothers neck, gently and carefully drawing out blood from her. Just like a tiger, it held unto her neck with its sharp jaws. I watched as grandmothers eyes gently closed. With all the anger in the world, I rushed towards the demon with my sword. I lifted myself from the ground and dived in the air with my arms fully stretched out. The metallic sword drove straight into the chest of the demon, piercing one of its giant eyes. The demon ten giant eyes closed instantly. A purple liquid substance, gushed out of its body, and it fell to the floor. Grandmother fell in the other direction lifelessly. My jump expanded the wound on my already turn neck, and blood gushed out like a river. My wounded leg became swollen and sour like a dead rabbit. I fell right beside grand mother like a bag of cassava and stared at Emunisike, the demon of death and darkness. He never moved all this while. It stood there watching as every fight unfolded. "Just kill me. Make it swift. I have no more strength to fight you. Kill me and let me die my death. But if I shall die, let my grand mother live. She does not deserve the pains she is going through. Let her eat the bitter kola of life and live." I let go of my sword and watched it fall beside me. With my right hands, I brought out the bitter kola and stretched it towards grand mother. "Grandmother, take and eat so that you may live again." "No Ikenga. I have lived my life in this world already. This is the end. My time is up now. You have a brighter future ahead of you. I want you to eat it and live for us. Eat it so you may be healed of your wounds and live again. "Ikenga, it is a good thing you plucked the Bitter cola. You lived by my words. A child who offers his parent bitter cola extends the life of his parents, and thus attracts the prayers and blessings of his parents." Grandmother spoke in a weak tone. "No mama. No. Please do not talk this way. I have been the stubborn child here. All this while I have been the one getting you into troubles. I remember when you stopped me from going out during the festival of the gods, but I disobeyed and went out. The gods sent pack of wolves to hunt me. But you found me and fought them on my behalf. It was in the process that you hurt your right legs. You became injured and limped. "I remember when my stubbornness led me into the evil forest and every one wanted to kill me but you stepped in. You vouched for me. You protected me. You were punished by the villagers on my behalf. "Grandmother, all I have done is bring you pains, and bring tears to your eyes. I have let you into this problems by eating the Igbuala mangoes, the same mangoes you have asked me not to eat. Now you want to save me from this one? "No grandmother, you deserve better. You do not deserve a stubborn grandchild like me. Let me die my death. Let me die and face the judgement of the gods. Take the Kola mother. Take it." I cried out with tears in my eyes. "Ikenga, your death shall bring me more pains. I am old and weak. I cannot keep living in this land knowing that you are no more. You are the one who keeps me moving. It is because of you the gods have granted me long life. I shall die if you die. "No grandmother. In that case, let us share the kola. Grandmother, you once told me that the perfect gift for an elder is a kola. You told me that a kola shared shows the existence of love. You said a family that shares kola shall not die. "Let us share the kola and live together. This is the kola of life. Anyone who eats from it shall have life. Grandmother eat it with me. Let us break it and eat." I pleaded in tears. "Ikenga, what if it does not work? What if we both die? What if a full kola is what is going to give you full life? Ikenga please do not take this risk. An old woman like me deserves to die, while she lets her younger generations live. I shall die before I eat that kola, and deny you a chance at living your dreams to the fulfilment of the gods." "Then grandmother, we shall die together and finally see the gods face to face. I shall not eat the bitter kola and live the rest of my life with the guilt of your death. I have nothing to live for. Let death take us both." I spoke feebly. In a distance I could see death plunging its fairy hands in my direction. I had lost so much blood and I knew I was going to die first before grandmother. The last tear rolled down my eyes. It was warm and innocent. "Oh Ikenga, even in a time of death, your stubbornness still roams around you. But this time, it roams for goods. Break the Kola that we might eat. If we live, we shall give thanks to the gods. But if we die, we die. I lifted the kola which was in my hands and broke it in two. I handed grandmother one piece and held unto one piece. I watched as grandmother chewed unto her bitter kola. I threw mine in my mouth and chewed also. It was the first time I was tasting a bitter kola. It was sweet and tasted like honey. This was not a bitter kola. It was a sweet kola. It was the kola that brings life to the bones of the dead and wounded. I chewed in delight and my eyes slowly closed as I plunged into darkness. ******************************** Grandmother's cough jolted me up from the floor and my eyes opened. The demon with seven hands and seven whips had disappeared. I looked at my skin in great surprise. My wounds had disappeared. My bones had become strong again. I felt an increase in my muscles. I turned to my left and beheld grandmother. Grandmother sat beside me with her eyes opened. The bite on her neck had healed up and the blood on her cloth had dried up. "Grandmother we are both fine. We are strong. Yes we are strong. " I jumped up from the floor and lifted her up. I picked up her walking stick and handed it over to her. Grandmother smiled. She took a lone walk and stopped. She looked in the distance and then at the sky. "Why have you chosen my family to bless. Why have you chosen to fulfil a prophecy that had lingered for so many years, using my own generation. Is this a way to console me for the death of my children? Let the gods be praised." Mama lifted her both hands above her head and pointed to the sky. "Grandmother what prophecy are you talking about?" "Ikenga, pick up your shield and sword. Let us go to the village and announce to the people what have just happened. The gods have chosen for us a king. I shall tell you about it as we walk. I picked up my shield and walked beside grandmother. We passed the tree with seven branches. The same tree that had turned into the seven heads of snakes. "Grandmother, why didn't you tell me that Agubdaobi turned the seven widows into a tree." "Well because you didn't ask. I have told you to always ask questions after my stories. Now are you prepared to hear the story of the prophecy?" "Yes grandmother. Tell me." Grandmother loosened the edges of her wrapper and brought out a kola from it. She broke in two and folded the other in her wrapper. "Is that the kola of life." I asked with my eyes opened wide. "No Ikenga. This is my own kola. This one is bitter- very bitter. It is nothing compared to the kola of life." She threw the kola in her mouth and chewed. Then she coughed and cleared her throat. "Long time ago, the people prayed to the gods to give them a king who would rule over them. They wanted a king who will sit on a throne like every other kingdom, and implement the wishes of the people, and that of the gods. So they prayed and gave sacrifices to the gods. The prayed for a bold and a wise king. "Fifteen years later, a prophecy came to the people of Agugu. I was only three years old then, and had just lost my father to the painful hands of death. The gods told the people of Agugu that their wish shall be granted, and a king shall be chosen. The gods commended the people for asking them for their help, and not going on to choose for themselves a king. "The gods promised them a strong, bold, and compassionate king who would rule over the people. They didn't want a king who would be selfish in his decisions, but a king who will also think of his own people. "The gods told us that a child shall be born. He shall be one who shall defile the rules of the gods. He shall be punished and made to face the seven weapons of the gods. He shall be tested, and if he passes this test, then he shall be king over the people of Agugu. "The gods also promised to give the chosen king one of their daughters as a wife. This is to serve as a covenant to the people of Agugu that the gods shall never leave nor forsake them. "Eighty years later, Ikenga, I think the prophecy is fulfilled. We have finally found our king." Grandmother smiled. "Mother, who is this King?" I asked inquisitively. "Ikenga, we shall know when we get to the village. Let us just walk. Our yam and oil must have gone cold by now. Double your steps." ?The End?
