The federal government of Nigeria has announced that it is now mandatory for all Nigerians to obtain their National Identity card number before 2019. Staring from January 1st 2019, the use of the National ID card will become mandatorily official. It is now important for everyone to get theirs before the year runs out.

*What is a National ID Card?
The National ID card is an important document, usually plastic that contains the holders identity, details and information. This National ID grants the holder access to certain benefits and laws of the particular country. It’s confirms his/her citizenry, ability to vote during election amongst other benefits.

*Nigerian National ID Card
In Nigeria, the National ID card is becoming increasingly important and is now used for various purposes in the country. For instance, it is one of the required documents needed to open a bank account in the country. As a matter of fact, recent news updates have suggested that MasterCard might allow the card to be used as a cash card outside the country. So you will agree with me the card is a very important one, and should be owned by everyone in Nigeria.

I’m here to assist you on how to register and obtain your Nigerian ID card. In this article, you will learn how to register Nigerian National ID as well as check for the availability of your card to collect it.

National Identity Card Registration in Nigeria
Registering for National ID card in Nigeria might seem a daunting task without proper information about how it is done. If you ask me, it is pretty much straight forward when you have the right information on how to get it.

For starters, simply visit the nearest National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in your state. You can check Google search on that or better still, ask people around.

It is advisable to go there with a pen and a few passport photographs, just incase any requirements pop up. Being a government agency, working hours is should be slated for  8am to 4pm.

*How to Check for Availability of National Identity Card Status
I have noticed a lot of people have registered for their NIMC but are yet to collect the card. Unfortunately, this isn’t the fault of the people but the government. The issuance of Nigerian National ID is very slow. I hope they improve significantly on that.

I am yet to receive my national ID since registering in 2016. For those like me who are yet to collect theirs, here is how to check if it’s available for collection before going to their offices.

Visit NIMC centre: https://touch.nimc.gov.ng/
Click on the proceed button
Next, fill in your first name, last name and your NIMC tracking ID, then click on the ‘check now’ button.
The next page that loads will tell you of the card is ready for collection or not. If it is ready, simply visit the same office you registered to pick up your card. If the card is not ready, you just have to exercise patience and keep checking at intervals.

Don’t panic about the deadline set by the federal government. If you have already registered, then you have no reason to fear. The problem is with the government.
