Deji Tinubu who was the Special Adviser of Sports to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode gave up the ghost on Thursday. This reportedly occurred during a novelty match in the Epe area of Lagos State where Lagos State Executive members and other top government functionaries attended.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that Deji Tinubu who was the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission slumped in the field during the match and confirmed dead in the hospital
A source who witnessed the gruesome incident, said
“He slumped while playing football this evening at Retreat with Governor in Epe, took to the Charlet clinic but was later rushed to the General Hospital in EPE when condition didn’t improve…. unfortunately, we lost Uncle Deji Tinubu is gone.”
The photo above was the last picture he took few minutes before the unfortunate incident happened. He is 5th left in the photo above which was taken few minutes before he slumped. Deji Tinubu is remembered for pushing for the approval of five schools competitions by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, which held in November and December in Lagos.
In his words, he revealed that his major watchword was to help students in Lagos State schools discover their talent and help them contribute positively to the growth of Nigerian football.
“His Excellency has been magnanimous to approve the staging of five school sports championships that will hold in the next two weeks. This is the first in the series of other events that are in the offing, that I can tell you,” he said.
Speaking further on other activities line up in the state, Tinubu said: “We will be having other championships like the swimming, table tennis, cricket, scrabble and a gymnastics initiative programmes to open up our sporting facilities to the public.
“We want to bring sports development to the schools, it is within this school environment that genuine and proper grassroots sports development can take its roots,” Tinubu stated.
