Episode 3
The threshold of the church was stuffed with legs as people trooped out en masse. Noises were coming from different angles like the commotion of traders in Oshodi market.
Joel was in the car looking forward to see the glint of Eunice among the crowd that was coming out of the church, but he could not find her easily. The wind blew against his face, like the waves that beat the floating ships.
He tried to move towards the church, thinking she might still be inside. There was screeching noise of vehicles leaving the expansive parking of the church. Nearby, dogs could be heard barking as day broke on a promising Saturday. Joel was about to enter the church when he heard the voice of a girl who called him from behind.
“Joel… Joel… ” Evelyn muttered his name from behind.
Joel tried to look back and noticed that it was Evelyn.
“Can I pass the night in your house..?” she asked with a tempting smile.
Joel looked into her eyes for some minutes as if the answer was in her eyes. He looked towards the church hoping to see Eunice come out of the many offices near the auditorium, but she wasn’t forthcoming. “I’m sorry for keeping you waiting, we were holding a short meeting” she replied looking toward Evelyn.
Joel introduced Evelyn to Eunice as a friend that he just met. He added that Evelyn would be passing the night with the two of them. Almost every member of the church had left the church, but Joel could still hear some voices from the church. They both moved toward the car as Evelyn tried to stir up a discussion with Eunice.
