A 3.4 magnitude earthquake has been detected in North Korea, about 50km from a nuclear test site just as previous quakes have occurred during weapons’ tests.

The quake was detected in an area around Kilju, in northeastern North Korea, and about 12 miles southeast of where the North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 3, according to an official from Seoul’s Korea Meteorological Administration.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency said earlier that the country’s seismic service detected a magnitude 3.4 quake in North Korea and saw the likely cause as an explosion. But the official from the South Korean agency said the analysis of seismic waves and the lack of sound waves clearly showed that the quake wasn’t caused by an artificial explosion. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office rules.

This is coming after North Korea carried out a massive nuclear test on September 3, 2017 which has been widely condemned at the UN.

On the other hand, the United States of America has vowed to shoot down any missile fired by North Korea towards Guam Territory, after dictator, Kim Jong-un threatened testing a H-bomb across the U.S Territory of Guam following Donald Trump’s speech at the just concluded UN General Assembly.

UN Assistant Secretary of State, Susan Thornton, said:

“If a missile targeted Guam or flew over it, we would have shot it down,” in a briefing for foreign journalists.

‘It is now possible to determine exactly where the rocket will fly and in Japan there are now special alert systems for the civilian population.’

“The question of whether or not to apply military actions depends on specific situation.”

Dr Emily Landau, a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), said she finally thinks North Korean supreme leader is realising there will be serious consequences if the United States or it’s allies is threatened.

“I think Kim might fire towards Guam and then we’ll have to see what the response will be.’ she said to Express.co.uk

‘Guam is a grey area for the US and i do not believe it is covered by the fire and fury threat, despite it being a US territory.’
