Nigerians love to eat on the
go; they cannot desist from
patronizing roadside food
vendors no matter how much
you preach. They enjoy eating
these foods and would go all
the way just to get them.
Major cities like Lagos have a
lot of food vendors who sell
some of their goods by the
road side.
They understand that most
people in this city are always in
a hurry; they have to go to
their offices and various points
of work. Some of them do not
have the time to cook in the
morning before setting out
while some are always beaten by
hunger on their way back to
their houses.
They feel the need to snack on
something when they are on the
move; thus, these street foods
come in handy. Nigerians who
enjoy street foods have
sampled quite a number of them
and know where to get the best
of these street foods over
time.
Find below some of the street
foods Nigerians enjoy buying
and eating:
1. Boli and groundnut
Boli is also known as roasted
plantain; Nigerians love snacking
on this food while they are
moving from one place to the
other. This roasted plantain
goes well with groundnut.
You will always find the sellers
of this street food in every
corner. Combining boli with
groundnut will rejuvenate you in
no time and drive away hunger.
2. Corn (roasted or boiled)
This is another popular street
food that Nigerians love and
enjoy eating. Whether the corn
is roasted or boiled, you will
always find Nigerians
patronizing the sellers.
Sometimes, this street food is
combined with coconut or pears
which is locally known as Ube.
This street food could be filling
and highly satisfactory when
eaten. Corn is rich in nutrient
and the smell of the fresh ones
would always inspire you to try
having one.
3. Fried yam or Dundun
Fried yam is another street
food Nigerians love. There
would always be a seller around
you; students save their pocket
money to buy this food when
they close in school.
The sellers often fry pepper to
sell with this food. It is a
delicacy you will enjoy when it is
being served hot. It could be
addictive once you start to buy
this food.
4. Akara
Nigerians love buying this food
whether they are in their cars
going to work or at home. Some
families save themselves the
stress of having to go through
the trouble of making this when
they could buy in the street.
Akara can be eaten with bread
or with Ogi. The older folks in
the society buy this street food
and eat it with Agidi or cold
pap.
5. Suya
Virtually every Nigerian fancy
buying this roadside food. The
street food is made from beef
or chicken which has been
seasoned and then roasted
lightly. Even though some
Nigerians are skeptical when it
comes to buying foods, they
cannot help eating this street
food. It is usually garnished
with onions and cucumbers.
6. Gala and Lacasera
Nigerians love eating this snack,
it is one snack that sells more
on the streets than in shops.
This street food is more
enjoyed when it is taken with
Lacasera or any other soft
drink. This street food can be
eaten anywhere without you
feeling messy.
7. Puff puff
There is no time this street
food does not sell; whether it is
in the morning or evening, this
street food will always be
bought. This street food is
made from flour and could be
filling when taken with soft
drinks.
8. Plantain chips
This crunchy snack is enjoyed
by many Nigerians. It could be
eaten on the move or while you
are at work. This snack is made
from either ripe or unripe
plantain. This delicious snack is
enjoyed by most Nigerians as it
is sold in every part of the
country.
9. Moin-moin
This food is made from beans.
It is a popular street food in
Nigeria as most people love
buying it in the streets. It
could be eaten plainly or
combined with bread. Either
way, it is a delicious food that is
rich in protein.
10. Rice and sauce
There are some roadside food
vendors that would never
disappoint you with their
pepper rice. This food is always
packed in coolers and set up in
strategic positions on the roads.
